M. Indira (36) (resident ofSouth Boag Road, T. Nagar),who masterminded the kid-napping of 18-month-old Ma-niraj (son of Murugan andSenthamizh Selvi, residents ofMurahari Salai, Sarathi Na-gar, West Saidapet) on June16, and her associates N. Na-gammal (42) of West Mam-balam, D. Sumathi (28) ofSaidapet, and S. Sathyamur-thy (45) of Porur were arrestedon June 29.

Giving details of the case on

June 30, J. K. Tripathy (Che-nnai Police Commissioner) toldnewsmen that Sivachalapa-thy, a businessman residing inErode who did not have chil-dren, went to an NGO in AshokNagar where he told Rosemary(a social worker) that hewanted to adopt a child as soonas possible.

Rosemary is said to havereferred him to Indira who toldhim that he could illegally adopta child immediately if he paidRs. 3 lakhs as she had to settle

Corporation Hospital, Lalitha-puram, T. Nagar as outpatientsin a month, Dr. B. R. Gomathy(medical officer) told Mam-balam Times on June 24. Shesaid that they are mostly fromT. Nagar, West Mambalam,

CIT Nagar and nearby areas.Consultation and medicinesare free. Medicines are alsoprovided for those sufferingfrom TB.

She said that patients arealso screened for diabetes, bloodpressure, thyroid, and malaria.Blood tests are also done, she

added. Dr. Gomathy said thatif a person is diagnosed as suf-fering from malaria, a specialteam visits the patient’s houseto screen other members ofthe family. The hospital alsoalerts the Corporation to con-

duct fogging operations in thearea.

Dr. Gomathy said that thehospital is open from 8 a.m to 3p.m from Monday to Saturday.She also conducts health campsin schools and slums.

During interrogation,Sathyamurthy gave details ofthe kidnapping following whichthe others were arrested.

According to police, Indirawas the brain behind the kid-napping. On her instructions,Nagammal and her husbandNarayanan, son Lakshma-nan, Sumathi, Kala andIllakkiya roamed the city insearch of a child playing on thestreet.

They found Maniraj aloneon the street and took himaway. Senthamizh Selivi andAshwini (3) were inside thehouse. His father Muruganworks in a plastic manufac-turing company.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

The casket, in which the welcome address to Chief MinisterAnnadurai had been kept, was to be auctioned at the meeting to raisecontribution for the Chief Minister’s Fund and AL. Srinivasanrequested that Meiyappan should bid for the casket irrespective of thegoing price. Meiyappan agreed at once without a second thoughtbecause the cause was laudable and for public good.

When the artistic casket was put up for auction at the well-attendeddinner-reception, Meiyappan began the bid with Rs. 5000. Soonothers chipped in with higher bids and the going rate shot up fast! Sixthousand, seven thousand and then the rate zoomed forward fast tofifteen thousand rupees! And then the tide stopped. Eager and keenthat he should have a hand in the first Dravidian party Chief Minister’sFund, Meiyappan bid Rs. 16,000 and his winning bid was acceptedwith loud cheers and applause. The successful bidder felt happy thathe had done his humble bit for the welfare of the less blessedfellowmen and women of his home state.

Speaking on the occasion, Annadurai praised Meiyappan and hisservices to cinema and his fame and name in the country. In hisinimitable oratorical style he said, “Recently I toured northern Indiaby car with some friends. I do not sleep early at night and go to seemovies. We broke journey in a small town and went to see a film.As soon as the screening began, people in the cinema hall cheered withloud hand claps! What did they cheer? It was the logo-emblem ofAVM Productions! I had thought that people clapped only when theysaw their favorite star’s name on the screen. But here North Indianscheered the name of a South Indian company and I felt very happy!’A creditable praiseworthy achievement of Meiyappan indeed!

Inspired by the popular signature tune of All India Radio (AIR),R. Sudarsanam composed a signature tune for AVM Productionsplayed on the clarinet. Its melodious tune and facile rendering becamepopular serving as a clarion call to moviegoers for wholesome clean,entertaining family-oriented cinema.

1960’s saw the growth of Meiyappan and the AVM moviemoghuldom. Successful and memorable movies in Tamil, Telugu andHindi were produced by him during this decade, which also witnessedhis sons Murugan, Kumaran and Saravanan joining the familyenterprise as producers under the guidance of the father. It also sawMeiyappan encouraging talent and giving breaks to non-familypersons who would soon make marks in South Indian Cinema. Onesuch was the talented and successful filmmaker with an impressivetrack record, A. .C. Thirulokachandar. Indeed Meiyappan everremained the active talent-scout and impresario.

A person of much creative talent and many skills of communicationand Meiyappan’s right-hand man, ‘Javert’ N. Seetharaman, workedon many screenplays for his boss and AVM Studios. One suchproved a major hit of 1960 and repeated its success when it wasremade in Hindi. That was ‘Kalathur Kannamma’ (‘Mein ChupRahungi’, Hindi, made in 1962). It was also dubbed in Telugu in1960 as ‘Maavoori Ammayi’.

The ‘back story’ of this film is interesting. The screenplay writtenby Javert Seetharaman had much in common with the MRA Play ‘TheForgotten Factor’. In the film, a rich feudal landowner’s city-educatedson (Gemini Ganesh) meets a poor but educated girl (K. Savithiri),thedaughter of the feudal bigwig’s lowly servant (S.V. Subbaiah) andthey fall in love, not aware of the identity and background of eachother and, after knowing the facts, they get maried in secret. Shebecomes pregnant, with her husband away studying in London andnot aware of his wife’s condition. Soon she gives birth to a son insecret. Her father, who has no idea of the identity of the child’s father,leaves his grandson in an orphanage at night. The heroine promisesher feudal father-in-law (T. K. Bhagavathi) that she would not revealthe fact of her marriage to his son and also keep out of her husband’slife. The hero returns and now more complications ensue leading tomore emotional situations until the tangles are solved leading to a ‘theylived happily ever after’ fade out ….

ing including a vacant shop at11/24, Ellaiamman Koil Street,West Mambalam collapsed at1 p.m on June 28 as the foun-

dation was weakened due tothe digging of a an 8-ft deeptrench alongside for laying astormwater drain.

9 families reside in the build-ing but no one was hurt.

Following the incident, Cor-poration workers closed thetrench at the spot and instal-led props to prevent other por-tions of the building from col-lapsing.

D. Mohan Battachariar (oneof the residents) told Mam-balam Times that the contrac-tor entrusted with the workused a JCP machine for diggingthe trench the previous day.

devices were handed over to T.Nagar Traffic Sub-division lastweek, V. K. Surendran (Asst.Commissioner of Police, T.Nagar Traffic Sub-division)told Mambalam Times on July1. The e-challan system wasinaugurated by Chief MinisterJ. Jayalalithaa on June 27.

Surendran said that themobile traffic signals will beused during power failure in T.Nagar, West Mambalam,Ashok Nagar, K. K. Nagar,MGR Nagar, Jafferkhanpet,Nesapakkam and other areas.

The mobile traffic signalswork on solar energy but bat-teries have also been provi-ded.

Surendran said that e-challan devices have beengiven to all Traffic Sub-inspec-tors.

He said that when the regis-tration number of the vehicleis fed into the e-challan ma-

chine, it displays details includ-ing the name of the owner, chas-sis number and engine num-ber. Earlier traffic rule viola-tions and details of fines paidwill also be available. The de-vice will also say whether thevehicle has been reported to bestolen.
