Why do After Prom? After Prom is designed to provide a safe and fun environment for students after they leave the Prom night dance. Activities are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for high schoolers and to provide opportunities to spend time with friends, while also keeping them out of trouble.

Why do After Prom?Durango High School has successfully run an After Prom for the last 13 years, with the following results:

● In the last 13 years, there has only been one alcohol related incident involving a DHS student on Prom night.● They average about a 96% attendance rate of those students who attend Prom, and many students attend only

After Prom.● According to Dale Garland, one of the DHS faculty who helped start After Prom,

■ We have experienced a great deal of community support, both financial and philosophical, due to the fact that we are proactively doing something to keep students safe on prom and the community (many of which are parents) realize that we are doing it of their sons and daughters.

■ We think key to any successful after prom is the involvement of the parents. Because of this we have worked very hard to bring in the skills and volunteerism of parents which has helped develop a strong cadre of parental support for our program and we actually have parents who stay involved even after their sons and daughters graduate.

■ A couple of our biggest allies are the Durango Police Department and La Plata County Sheriff, who used to dread prom night and who are now bored on prom night.

How can I help?In order to get students to attend After Prom, the quality has to be high and the prizes have to be big. The end-of-night raffle items must be the sorts of items that would motivate high school students to stay all night instead of going out to drink with their friends.

How can I help?● Parents and community members interested in helping to organize and run

the event would be greatly appreciated. If After Prom is perceived as a community event, students will be more likely to attend. This may include running games, dealing cards in the casino room, holding raffle drawings, and just generally keeping control of the night

● Businesses may donate money or products to be used as prizes or to help make the activities at After Prom possible.
