By ShivpprasadhTears trickle down my

cheeks as I put down mymemories of Srivatsa Jaya-rama Sarma (SJS), a masterstoryteller and upanyasaka, who passed away recently.

He was a long time residentof Mambalam.

On a rainy day, SJS, as ayoungster, took shelter in SivaVishnu Temple (South UsmanRoad T. Nagar) to escape therains. At that time,Sengalipuram AnantharamaDikshitar was presenting a dis-course on Narayaneeam. Itwas the turning point in SJS’slife and he became Dikshitar’sstudent before embarking on

his chosen path to fame andpopularity.

Only two programs out ofmany conducted annually inMahalingapuram AyyappanTemple would attract unman-ageable audience: concert byK. J. Yesudas & religious dis-

course by SJS.He had a way of connecting

cricket with his talks onNarayaneeyam, Srimad Bha-gavatam, Srimad Ramaya-nam and Bhaja Govindam, andmore.

Right from the umpires, tostumps and fielders, he couldlink cricket with the topic hewas discussing to keep his au-dience of all age groups en-thralled.

Also, humour was anotheraspect of his discourse. He willbe deeply missed.

Total reservoir storageat 90% of full capacity

By Our Staff ReporterEven though the rains have subsided in the city and its

suburbs, the city reservoirs in Red Hills, Cholavaram,Poondi and Chembarambakkam are registering healthyinflows. The storage on the morning of Dec. 25 was 9915million cubit feet (mcft) which is almost 90% of the totalcapacity of 11057 mcft. The total storage on the same datelast year was 2985 mcft.

The total capacity over the past one week has been 9869mcft (Dec. 20), 9868 mcft (Dec. 21), 9877 mcft (Dec. 22),9891 mcft (Dec. 23) and 9895 mcft (Dec. 24) which showsthat the daily inflow more or less matches the daily outflow.

The average daily inflow since Dec. 15 has been around650 cusecs per day.

The storage in the water bodies, which are the primarysources of city water supply, was abysmally low severalmonths ago for want of rain.

As on Dec. 25, Poondi has a storage of 3077 mcft as againstits full capacity of 3231 mcft (413 mcft on the same day lastyear); Cholavaram has 716 mcft as against the full capacityof 881 mcft (110 mcft last year); Red Hills has 2914 mcft asagainst its full capacity of 3300 mcft (1446 mcft last year)and Chembarambakkam has 3208 mcft against its fullcapacity of 3645 mcft (1016 mcft last year).

The two desalination plants also contribute around200MLD daily.

Land GrowthSome wise men have been heard to spout angrily “Land

does not grow on trees” in heated arguments while recom-mending preservation of trees forever felled for advance-ment of domestic use.

This nugget of wisdom was proved right during therecent Chennai floods that stripped clean the city withoutuprooting a single tree on the banks of the rivers that haveriven the city with their destructive arms, snaking throughthe city’s good, bad, stinking waterways.

Riverine simplicity is evocative of eternal values, but itscommercialisation is grossly ugly, as the unwritten epi-taph of some two dozen patients in a hospital, parts ofwhich were located in a river, would vouch for. When youbuild in water and try to peacefully coexist, water willshow its true character and try to drown you when youleast expect it.

Riparian philosophy is a difficult kettle of fish. The owners of the riverine enclaves who must have

chuckled at the bravado in stealing the murky deal willnow have to shed rivers of tears for claiming ownership ofthe rivers. Is it a commodity in the market which was soldby the government in an auction? If properties of thegovernment of the day are perennially deemed to becommodities for private ventures, I shall stake my claimto a room in the High Court Lawyers’ Chambers where Iam one of the allottees so that my heritage will be pre-served and my heirs, if they are condemned by fate to belawyers, can inherit it.

Amma with her foresight can spend a few minutes of herbusy calendar to think about this inheritance. Thank you,Amma.

After his release from prison in 1947, Bhagavathar produced andappeared in ‘Raja Mukthi’ (1948), a fine musical but a failure at thebox-office. He also starred in ‘Amarakavi’ (1952), ‘Shyamala’(1952), and ‘Pudu Vazhvu’ (1957) and ‘Sivakami’ (1960), but noneof them was a success. He gradually went to pieces, losing hishealth and wealthand died virtually a pauper. Even Bhagavathar’sfuneral arrangements were made possible only through thegenerosity of friends and admirers. (When Bhagavathar died in1959, a few scenes of ‘Sivakami’ had been shot with him. The filmwas released posthumously.)

Why did people who had revered him as a demigod reject himlater? Whatever happened to the incredible following he had?How and why did it fade away long before he died? These arequestions to which answers have not been found to this day.

In all his later films he sang as well as earlier and there was nochange seen in his screen persona. Yet, the films failed to enthusemoviegoers. Why?

A plausible explanation is that trends in Tamil cinema hadundergone major changes by the time Bhagavathar made hiscomeback. The advent of writers like C. N. Annadurai and Mu.Karunanidhiand actors like Sivaji Ganesan and M. G.Ramachandran had changed everything. Bhagavathar was not agreat actor compared to Sivaji Ganesan, nor could he compete withthe latter’s dialogue delivery. He was also no match for the action-oriented MGR.

The Lakshmikantham murder trial and its aftermath ruinedBhagavathar financially, physically, mentally and psychologi-cally. The shock of being an accused in a murder trial and sent toprison was too much to bear for the great man and he never reallyrecovered from it. However, Bhagavathar the singer still lives inthe minds of millions of South Indians to this day, something thatis reflected in the continued sales of the audio-cassettes of his filmsongs.

N.C. VASANTHAKOKILAM - 1During her heyday she was one of the top three lady classical

Carnatic musicians, M. S. Subbulakshmi and D. K. Pattammalbeing the other two.

Interestingly all of them were involved in movies, more pre-cisely Tamil Cinema, Pattammal as an off-screen voice-lending‘play-back’ singer and the other two as on-screen singing perform-ers. ‘MS’ had a halo of glamour around her and, even as teenager, she had hit the headlines. But N. C. Vasanthakokilam did not havethat kind of glittering halo. Though her musical talents and skillswere as good as those of MS, she lacked the good looks, glamourand charisma and that indefinable factor, the class or ‘X-factor’which MS had aplenty and Vasanthakokilam did not possess. Nordid she have the movie star looks and figure and all that goes witha star! She was not photogenic and she was no actress. But certainlyshe was a singer of haunting melody and high musical values. Yetshe did act in a fistful of films during 1940’s. Some of them areremembered to this day, like ‘Haridas’ 1944), ‘Valmik’ (1946) and‘Gangavatar’ (1942), ‘Venuganam’ (1941), and ‘Krishna Vijayam’(1950).

Kamakshi (that was her given name) hailed from an IyerBrahmin family of Irinjalakuda now in Kerala, but the family hadsettled down in the port town Negapatam (now Nagapattinam)touching the Bay of Bengal. She was blessed with a melodioushoneydew voice and her father had her trained in classical Carnaticmusic in Negapatam. She and her father nursed and nurtured theambition that she should be a performing musical artiste and winfame and fortune.

The sadly neglected Indian film pioneer, the lawyer-turned-filmmakerK. Subramaniam, had strong links with Negapatamthrough marriage into a wealthy lawyer’s family. Ever a talentscout, he felt that the girl had talent and could be groomed into asinging Tamil film actress. That was the period when onscreenperformers had to sing in their own voice and the now common androutine off-screen-voice-lending -”play-back” system - was not yetin vogue. Prompted by his encouragement and promises, thefather and daughter landed in Madras where they hardly knew anysoul or body except K. Subramaniam! They had not much moneyeither. Regretfully they could not meet Subramaniam for he wasaway in Calcutta making a film. They were all at sea in the baysidemetropolis. Luckily, a family friend, a young bachelor, a native ofNegapatam who had learnt music with Kamakshi under the sameguru, was then working in the Egmore station of the then pri-vately-owned South Indian Railway (SIR). He came to their rescueand gave them refuge in his bachelor quarters at the outskirts ofthe city.

(The retired railway executive who narrated the story-book likeevents of 1930s to this writer during a rainy evening in Madras inearly 1980s wished to remain anonymous for obvious reasons !)

At some risk and much trouble, the Good Samaritan workedhard to promote his small town friend - by nowhis lover! Using hisconnections he succeeded in getting his mate a break to sing overradio then run by the Corporation of Madras. (The local stationbroadcast its programs only in the evenings. All India Radio,Madras was yet to be born!) She also sang in many places in thecity and cut discs (then called ‘plates’) for His Master’s Voice(HMV).She also won prizes and gold medals in music competitions. Criticsand crowds began to take notice of her. By now she he had a newname, N. C. Vasanthakokilam! (To be continued)

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR4.5 lakhs worth relief materials distributed

Sir, On Dec. 13, JeevaPark Walkers and JoggersAssociation distributed re-lief materials worth Rs. 4.5lakhs among more than300 flood affected familiesof MGR Nagar and J. J.Nagar (Manapakkam,Chennai). They includedprovisions, water bottles, biscuits, mosquito coils, milk powder, clothes andother essentials. The fundswere donated by Associa-tion members and mem-bers of Rotary Club ofChennai Port City. C.Muthusamy, President, Jeeva Park Walkers and Joggers Association, G.N. ChettyRoad, T. Nagar.

Burglary attempt in apartment complexSir, There was a burglary

attempt in our apartment com-plex on Burkit Road, T. Nagaron the night of Dec. 20. I hadreturned home late in the nightafter an outing with my family.Everything appeared normal, the watchman was at the gateand the lights were burning inthe common area. As I wasabout to hit the bed at around12 midnight, I saw a shadow ofa person standing on the sun-shade and trying to peep inthrough the window. A soon asI raised an alarm, he jumpedfrom the sunshade and racedaway in the darkness. I rushed

to the balcony and managed toget a glimpse of him. Though Icould not see his face clearly,he appeared to be in his 30’s,lean and wearing a lungi andshirt. He jumped over the com-pound wall and escaped. In themorning, we found his footprintand hand imprint in the dust inthe sunshade and windows re-spectively. A complaint waslodged with T. Nagar PoliceStation. There are a number ofsenior citizens living in ourapartment complex. If ourcomplex, which is at a busyjunction and very close to T.Nagar Police Station, can be

targeted, other apartmentsare even more vulnerable. Thethieves are getting bolder dueto the laxity shown by resi-dents in security arrange-ments.

My appeal to theneighbourhood residents is totake extra precaution in theirapartments by having secu-rity systems like CCTV cam-eras to discourage thieves andburglars. Ajay Kumar, Sec-retary, Sri Sumukha FlatsWelfare Association, OldNo. 25, New No. 63, BurkitRoad,T. Nagar, Mob: 9600070709.

Improper enumerationof flood victims byrevenue officials

Sir, Revenue officials havebeen visiting the houses in floodaffected areas in theneighbourhood since the begin-ning of this month to do anenumeration for distribution ofrelief items. But it is not knownon what basis they are doingthe enumeration. When theyvisited our street, the officialswere selective. Though all theground floor houses got inun-dated, the authorities visitedonly a couple of houses.

So the families that wereexcluded in the exercise areunlikely to benefit from thegovt. schemes for flood affectedvictims. I request the authori-ties to re-survey our street toensure that all the affectedresidents are included in thelist. N. Rama-murthy, A1,Alankar Apartments, OldNo. 12, New No. 25, RamanStreet, T. 12 medical students suspendedon ragging charge

Twelve 2nd year students of ESI Medical College, K.K. Nagar were suspended on Dec. 23 for allegedlyharassing a junior staying in the hostel. This createdsome tension among the students.

While the Central Government-run college remainsclosed for study holidays ahead of upcoming exams, the 12 students were called for questioning by theDean after the reported incident.

The students, all day scholars, allegedly went to themen’s hostel on Dec. 21 and ragged the first-yearstudent. The victim lodged a complaint with the Deanwho ordered an inquiry.

A student said most inmates of the college hostelwere from outside Chennai and some had problems asthey were not willing to ‘obey’ their seniors. “Thisstarted as a minor incident in which seniors teased thejunior but it quickly snowballed into an ego clash whenthe junior student’s parents and friends got involved,”said another student.

A staff member said that the senior students couldhave been let off with a warning but the victim’s familymounted pressure and insisted on suspension.

However, no police complaint has been lodged.
