FOREWORD

This volume contains a large selection of the papers presented during the 49th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI) organized in Cluj-Napoca, Romania between 27-30 May 2015.

The meeting was attended by almost 300 participants from 28 countries and four continents,included workshops dedicated to basic and clinical/translational research on following topics: the phagocyte, the mitochondria, cardiology, metabolic diseases, neurogastroenterology, rheumatology, urology and of course, varia. Several plenary sessions were organized, putting together specialists of different fields, and this feature is indeed particular to the meetings of ESCI. specialities.

In a retrospective look, we may consider that the meeting was a real success, considering the final evaluation, but also from the impression of the delegates.

And now, here we are able to display some of the most interesting works of ESCI 2015. The papers are presented in alphabetical order of the first authors. The readers will thus find a mosaic of original data and updated reviews on many medical fields, that would interest evey health professional. The book has also an important educational value for trainees in medicine.

The format is corresponding to the format of the proceedings series of Medimond Editore, to whom we thank for publishing this volume. Every effort was undertaken to review the content of the manuscript, but authors keep the responsability for the accuracy of the content of their papers.

We thank also Ms. Alina Puscas for taking care of the technical issues of this volume.
