Macro PhotographyMacro Photography is the art of taking extremely close-up photos, typically of small objects, in which the subject in the photograph appears larger than life-size. In order to take these photos, I used a tripod and auxillary light sources, with a slow shutter-speed in order to capture enough light. Higher exposure makes it possible for the images to be more crisp and the details more visible.

Auxillary LightingBy using close-up filters as well as auxillary light, it is possible to get photos with great detail. For these photos, I used a light box, three LED lights, close up lens filters, and my bearded dragon, Deigan. Using manual focus allowed for awesome detail of both Deigan and the background, which is simply one of my colorful beanies. The lenses also create a beautiful depth of field.

Creative LightingThere are so many awesome tools that help take advantage of natural light and also create light when we do not have enough. In the portrait on the left, I used natural, clouded, sunlight with a golden reflector to add warmth and additional light to my subject’s face.

In the portrait to the right, I used a speed light with a snoot and natural light from a window to illuminate just part of the subject’s face. A snoot is a tube or other object that can be shaped around a portable or stationary light to control the radius and direction of the light.

Bannack PortraitsBannack, Montana is a ghost town that has become a state park in recent years. The old buildings have been preserved in their original state and there are often re-enactments of historic events held in the town.

For this particular day, the provided models, dressed in old-fashioned garb, allowed me to pose them and take their photos. For these photos I used a continuous auxillary light source as well as a silver reflector.

Depth of FieldIt is possible to have a deep or shallow depth of field by adjusting the aperature on your camera. A deep depth means that more of an image is in focus and a shallow depth means that only a small part of an image is in focus. For these two images, I used a low aperature to create a shallow depth of field. By focusing just on my subject, it created a beautiful focal point with a nice blur in the background.
