NOTE: To assist with locating information. each division of the manual is preceeded by a contents page listing the operation in numerical order.
Each instruction within an operation has a sequence number. and to complete the operation in the minimum time it is essential that these instructions are performed in numerical sequence commencing at 1 unless otherwise stated. When applicable. these sequence numbers identify the components in the appropriate illustration. Where performance of an operation requires the use of a special tool. the tool number is quoted under the operation heading and is repeated in. or following. the instruction involving its use.
MF 231/261 Tractors
INDEXING For convenience the manual is divided into parts and sections. each page bearing a part and section number. The sections are subdivided into numbered operations.

The coolant is circulated by thermo-syphon action assisted by a centrifugal type pump. The system is controlled by a thermostat which prevents coolant from flowing through the radiator until correct working temperature has been achieved. and a pressure-sensitive radiator cap. which. by allowing radiator to pressurize. raises temperature at which the coolant will boil. A fan attached to front of engine assists cooling by drawing air through radiator.
The water pump and cooling fan are driven by a belt. which is driven by a pulley keyed to front of crankshaft.

FUEL INJECTORS
Removal and Installation 4F-13-12
1. Remove left hand side panel-Operation-2A-02-02. 2. Remove bolts and remove fuel return lines. 3. Remove high pressure lines and cap the ports to
prevent dirt entry. 4. It may be necessary to remove the engine lifting eye, to
remove number injector. 5. Remove injector securing nuts, and remove injectors. 6. Remove injector sealing washers. 7. Repeat procedures for remaining injectors.
Reverse procedure to install injectors. 8. Torque injector securing nuts to 13 ± 3 ft.lbs. (18 ± 4.5
Nm) 9. Bleed system-Operation-4F-15-13.
INJECTORS
Checking and Adjustment 4F-14-12
To Check injector proceed as follows:
A CAUTION: Do not allow the fuel spray from the nozzle to come in contact with the body. The spray has sufficient pressure to puncture the skin and should the fuel enter the blood stream. it may cause serious injury.
1. Remove the injector-Operation-4F-13-12. 2. Remove the cap. 3. Connect the injector to an injector tester pipe and
pump at the rate of 20 to 40 strokes per minute. 4. Check .f8ening pressure which should be 2480 ~~~ PSI
(17.1 -O:~~ MPA) on a new nozzle, 2407 PSI (16.6 MPA) minimum working pressure on a used nozzle. Pressure is varied by loosening top nut and adjusting internal screw. Screw in to increase pressure, out to decrease. Retighten top nut and recheck opening pressure.
IMPORTANT: When checking the setting of a used injector assembly and no internal components or the injector need replacing. reset the injector assembly to the working pressure.
If. however. internal components such asthe spring. orthe complete injector have to be replaced. reset the assembly to the "setting pressure" (maximum setting).
NOTE: Always recheck the opening pressure after having assembled tightened the injector to make sure that the setting has not been modified.
Issue 2
5. Spray Pattern Test-Close the pressure gauge tap, then operate the lever (short quick strokes) at a rate of 90 to 1 00 strokes per minute and observe the nozzle spray pattern. Four symmetrical sprays should come from the tip of the nozzle body. The spray pattern from each hole should be completely atmomized and break into a very fine mist. If the spray patterns do not have equal penetration into the air, are unduly wet streaky or not symmetrical, the nozzle must- be serviced or replaced.
6. Check the Back Leakage (leakage past the nozzle valve and body)-Operate the injector tester lever until fuel sprays from the nozzle, then operate the lever slowly to raise the pressure to slightly below opening pressure and then stop pumping. Time the pressure drop, from 2205 Ibf.lin2 (150 ATM) to 1470 Ibf.lin2 (100 ATM). For a nozzle in good condition, this time should not be less than six seconds. At the same time check for leaks between the nozzle holder and nut. There may be external leakage, which is easily visible or internal leakage which cannot easily be distinguished from back leakage past the nozzle valve. If excess leakage (internal or external) is indicated, ensure injector caps are securely tightened. If still in excess, replacement of the nozzle and/or nozzle holder will be required.
7. Check for leaks. Wipe the nozzle clean and build up the pressure to about 147 Ibf.lin2 (10 ATM) below the opening pressure setting. No drops of fuel should appear but a slight amount of dampness may be disregarded. If the injector is in good condition, there should be a slight "humming" or "cracking" sound as the fuel emerges from the holes.
8. If any faults are found, disassemble the injector and clean or replace the nozzle.

The PTO shaft projects rearward from lower section of rear axle housing. The PTO shaft is supported in two points. The front end of PTO shaft is supported by needle bearing and rear end is supported by ball bearing. The front journal of PTO shaft rests in needle bearing which at same time supports hydraulic lift pump camshaft. There are two seals at rear end of PTO shaft. One of metal to exclude external dirt and a lip type seal to retain transmission oil within rear axle housing.
In front part of shaft. ground speed PTO gear is installed and it is driven from the hydraulic lift pump camshaft (proportional engine speed) or from final drive pinion (proportional ground speed). The gear pOSition is controlled by lever situated in PTO side cover.
On outside rear of tractor a guard is installed to protect shaft seals and PTO shaft end against dirt. and for safety.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM (MF 231/261)
GENERAL
The Ferguson hydraulic system consists of a four cylinder scotch yoke type pump (1) which delivers oil. through a vertical pipe (2) to cylinder (3).
A connecting rod (4) from cylinder piston (5) engages in ram arm (6) which is splined on to lift shafts (7) which carries linkage lift arms.
When oil. under pressure from pump. is delivered to ram cylinder (3). piston is forced rearwards and pushes ram arm upwards. causing lift shaft to rotate and raise lift arms.
Conversely when oil is allowed out of cylinder. the piston moves back under load of lift arms.
The hydraulic pump is driven by PTO drive from PTO clutch plate. via constant mesh gears and PTO drive shaft. It is therefore .rotating whenever forward part of PTO system is being driven.
Oil flow from pump is controlled by an integral control valve on suction side.
The pump control valve is moved by quadrant levers. orforces down top link. or by the cam rotation on cross shaft or by the servo valve diaphragm linkage.
The speed of movement of valve into discharge is controlled by response unit.
HYDRAULIC PUMP
The pump consists of two piston yokes (1) which ride on cam blocks over eccentrics on a camshaft (2). The pistons. reciprocate in two opposed valve chambers (3). each housing two inlet (4) and outlet valves (5) and springs. A sealing plug and snap ring secure valves in chambers.
Front and rear castings incorporate oil galleries connecting two valve chambers. and also house control valve (6) and oscillator (7).
Attached to rear castings is Response Control and strainer hOUSing (9) and also servo valve 8. As each of pump pistons moves down its cylinder it creates suction which lifts inlet valve from its seat and draws in oil past control valve (if open) along intake gallery into cylinder. During this inlet stroke the outlet valve is held closed by spring action. When piston reaches end of its inlet stroke. suction ceases and cylinder is full of oil. Inlet valve is closed by inlet valve spring.
As piston returns into cylinder. resultant pressure in oil keeps inlet valve closed and lifts outlet valve. This pressure forces oil past outlet valve into high pressure gallery and up stand pipe to ram cylinder.
