The shoddy way in whichstorm water drains are beingconstructed in several streetsin this neighbourhood is caus-ing a lot of hardship to roadusers and residents.

On June 22, a JCB machinewhile digging a trench alongChakrapani Street Extension(West Mambalam) damagedthe underground Metrowaterpipes and EB and telephonecables.

A nearby resident toldMambalam Times that asusual there was no notifica-tion or coordination betweenthe various civic authoritiesbefore starting such a criticalwork.Once the damage wasdone, the blame game beganand it took a lot of effort on theresident’s part to get the re-pairs done by the respectivedepartments and we wereforced to suffer till then, he

said.Similarly, residents of Hindi

Prachar Sabha Street (T.Nagar) had to suffer for a longtime when the sewage waterleaked into the Metrowater line

as both got damaged duringdigging. It took more than amonth for the Metrowaterworkers to identify the leaksand plug them.

Nalini, a resident of the

street, told Mambalam Timesthat many residents wereforced to close the valve ontheir Metrowater line and buywater in tanker lorries to filltheir sumps.

The Tharai Ticket Aasaami (TTA) could whistle at the goingson on screen or sneeze on cue if the lovers on screen got too closefor a kiss! Such joys and privileges were denied to the better-placed person on the higher classes of bench or chair!

Rajam saw many silent films in a tent cinema located in anopen space behind the P.S. High School compound. To his lastdays he remembered the name of a movie he saw decades agoin parts ‘Nal Damayanthi’, produced in Northern India! Obvi-ously, it was the second version of the familiar tale made in1927 by the founding father of Indian Cinema, DadasahebPhalke at Nasik. It was 8123 feet in length. Rajam evidentlysaw the Phalke movie of 1927, which was possibly screened inparts! He was then in his preteens.

The first permanent movie house of Mylapore, Kapali Talk-ies, came up in late 1930s and, until the recent years, it servedthe Mylai-wasis well. In that era, it was rather isolated withareas like Raja Annamalaipuram, Mandavelipakkam, andsuch not having come to existence.

The first superstar of South India of India, M. K. ThyagarajaBhagavathar, inaugurated Kapali Theater for which he wasgiven a silver hammer as memento!

(There have been fanciful explanations why a hammer, of allthe things, was given but none of them is complimentary topoor MKT!)

(Foreigners especially Americans wonder why movie housesin India are called “Talkies”! One American diplomat in Madrasasked this writer what that word meant! In the early days, movie house or tents screened only silent films. When moviesbegan to talk English in 1927, and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in1931, Kannada in 1934, and Malayalam 1938, cinemas ac-quired sound equipment and the theaters came to be known as‘talkies’ as opposed to places screening silent films. For sometime, even after movies began to talk in India, silent films werestill being made in south India. To distinguish the two, the word‘talkies’ was used in India. (This word is not in use in the West.)

Meanwhile, back at Kolhapur, then a ‘native’ state ruled bya maharajah, V. Shantaram, one of the greatest filmmakersof India then, making his way in movies with the celebratedPrabhat Pictures, wrote to a Madras-based movie magazine,“Sound and Shadow” seeking help to make a Tamil film usingthe sets, props and all of his Hindi film, “Sairandhri” (1933,India’s first film in color). The film had not done well and thecompany was trying to cut its losses by launching a Tamil filmusing the same re-usable materials. The magazine was beingrun by the talented trio, Muthuswami Iyer (later filmmakerunder the name, ‘Murugadasa’), A. K. Sekhar (art director, production designer, and master of all, and later a big name inSouth Indian Cinema), and K. Ramnoth (brilliant technicianand genius of Tamil cinema, sadly neglected today). A richimpresario and fine arts-lover, and talent-scout and all, G. K.Seshagiri, financially backed them.

Soon the trio, Seshagiri, the Mylapore lawyer SundaramIyer, his children Rajam, Jayalakshmi and the youngest son,the seven year old prodigy, S. Balachandar and members of anamateur drama troupe boarded a train at Madras to Miraj (arailway junction) en route to Kolhapur.

Accompanying them was Papanasam Sivan as music com-poser, blissfully unaware as the train chug/chugged its waythat he was on his way to fame and fortune!

Rajam faced a movie camera for the first time in “SeethaKalyanam” (1933). A Prabhat production, it was directed bythe well-known Marati and Hindi filmmaker of his day, BaburaoPhendarkar.

Interestingly, the so-called Tamil film historians, in theirblissful ignorance, have been writing and speaking in Tamil andEnglish spreading misinformation about the making of SeethaKalyanam”.

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

Fourscore YearsWith great apologies to Abraham Lincoln,

who won the hearts of everyone and theunity of the Blacks and the Whites after theunification-war in America, I would venture,if I had the talent of that great President orhis vision, to thank my good father (who artin heaven now) for having launched myjourney on earth in cool Nairobi, the capitalof Kenya, (then under the British rule) onJune 23, 1933 when he was working for thePost Master General of the three East Afri-can colonies of the British government.

This nondescript 80 did not ring bells, forthe joint authors had made their fiery jour-neys unnoticed by any except their nearestand dearest.

I can claim to be an icon since my goodfriend Barack Obama’s father is a Kenyanand that Hussain Obama and I must haveseen the Thikka Falls, a splendid cascadethat had thrilled me, a youngster of around4 years, on an outing with my family on aweekend .

The next time I heard of Barack was whenhe was crowned President of the mightyUSA. Since he has not heard of me either, itwas a draw, but I wanted him to win since Ihad entered this beautiful world throughNairobi, the cool capital of Kenya, thou-sands of miles from our family’s Indian homein Kannur in Kerala.

Mother has related to us the traumaticdawn of the date of my birth when she hada dream in which the great seerShankarachariar told her that her thirdbaby would be a boy and that he should benamed after his lieutenant Sadanand. Thevision vanished and within minutes, thedelivery order had to be complied with. Mothercried through happiness when she saw meand promptly named me Sadanand.

This 80-year old story never failed to thrillher as it was a true happening and the saintpatron had even named me.

Any questions, gentlemen?

Sir, at the outset I thank you publishing my letter in your edition dated (June 15-21), about a manholeon Ramanathan Street (T. Nagar), having remained uncovered for the past several months and posing adanger to pedestrians.

After the publication of my letter, Chennai Corporation officials swung into action on Tuesday andprovided a cover for the manhole.

I appreciate their quick action and also the effect of your publication in addressing many an issue of theneighbourhood residents, especially the civic ones. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

LETTERS TO THE EDITOROpen manhole covered after report in Mambalam Times

Sir, I am a resident of Venkatachalam Street (West Mambalam). For the last couple of weeks, there isa foul smell in the water supplied to our residents through the Metrowater pipeline. Many a time, the wateris also murky. It is unfit for consumption in any form, be it drinking, cooking or for any other householdactivity. It poses a serious health hazard to our residents.

Our Association has appealed to Metrowater officials to look into the problem, but no action has beentaken so far. Many of the residents have closed the valve in their Metrowater line and are instead fillingthe sump by buying water in tanker lorries at a high cost. We request urgent action in the matter. It mustbe ensured that permanent steps are taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. – M. SrinivasaRao, 27, Venkatachalam Street, West Mambalam
