TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 30One of the much-written-about and also much-criticised in

the history of Tamil Cinema is ‘Veera Pandya Kattabomman’(1959). This film was made at enormous expense, shot inTechnicolor and processed and printed in England. It bloomedat the box office touching a record run of 25 weeks.

‘Chitra’ S. Krishnaswamy, the journalist turned filmpersonality (and a good friend of this writer) told him that heworked on the production and directed the film but took nocredit. According to him, B.R. Panthulu did not make any profitbecause of the high cost of production.

Kattabomman was actually of Telugu descent and his familyhailed form Kandukuru, now part of Prakasam District inAndhra Pradesh. He spoke mostly in Telugu and learnt Tamilwhen he moved south to Panchalankurichi and became itsruler. He had a brother by name Oomathurai According tohistorians, he was also a major character which was played byO.A.K, Thevar in the movie. The role was first offered to S. S.Rajendran who opted out due to other professional pressures.According to knowledgeable historians, Oomathurai sufferedfrom a speech defect and did not speak Tamil at all! Howevermany liberties were taken with the character of Kattabomman, which was mainly the contribution of writer, scholar andpolitician Ma. Po. Sivagnana Gramani who had written a bookon the hero.

(Murasoli Maran, a good friend of this writer, studied for oneterm with him in the Madras Law College and dropped out.During that period he asked this writer to do a book onKattabomman which could be prescribed for non-detailedstudy at college level. This writer did much research at theArchives of the Tamil Nadu State Government in Egmore.Taking the required permissions this writer was given accessto the handwritten diary-dispatches sent by the local officersof East India Company in Madras to the bosses in England.Looking like bank ledger books, they were written in excellenthandwriting and had considerable material aboutKattabomman whom the East India Company described as a‘freebooter’. (A freebooter is one who makes a living by robberyon the highways almost like a Robin Hood!). This writerdiscussed with Murasoli Maran, who arranged for a meetingwith the scholar MA. Po. Si who, on hearing this writer, explodedand said that a young man with the name of an American(Randor Guy!) could never do justice to the Tamil hero likeVeera Pandya Kattabomman. He virtually hounded this writerout of his study room! When it was narrated to Murasoli Maranhe broke into peals of laughter and asked this writer to drop theproject and paid him a token fee for the research done by him!)

Over the decades Kattabomman had been elevated as a folkhero, being eulogised in ballads, folk songs and ‘theru koothoos’(folk street theatre in rural areas). In 1947, soon after theBritish left India, a film company spread the news through filmmagazines about its ‘mammoth production’ which would beplayed by the top star of the day, P. U. Chinnappa. But nothingcame out of it.

Later the Indian movie mogul S. S. Vasan took up the ideaand set his story department to research the subject as theprelude for scripting. For several months Gemini writersKothamangalam Subbu and Vepathur Kittu worked on theproject and took copious notes on Kattabomman and his days.In true Gemini style, advertisements were released in theEnglish press announcing the film, but the dynamic Vasancould not proceed further. He had the money and manpowerbut was stumped. The problem was that the only choice to playthe title role was Sivaji Ganesan. But Sivaji Ganesan was nowa big star who had not forgotten the ‘Chandralekha’ incident.Whenever the two met socially they exchanged greetings butboth felt distinctly embarrassed. The star was rather evasive, not committing himself to play the role and Vasan realised thathis project would never take off.

Sivaji Ganesan had dreamt of doing the role on stage eversince his boyhood. So he staged the play which written by‘Shakthi’ Krishnaswami and it proved a big hit. SoonB.R.Panthulu of Padmini Pictures had little difficulty inpersuading Sivaji Ganesan to do the role for him in a movie. Thisis how it all began. (To be continued)

LETTERS TO THE EDITORChain snatching incidents in West Mambalam

Sir, I would like to bring to the attention of the readers a spate ofchain snatchings which took place on the mornings of May 9 and May10 in West Mambalam. I was staying at my parents’ house onSubramanian Street. At around 5.15 a.m I heard a loud scream. I ranoutside and found that a man had snatched the chain from an elderlylady who lives in our building. The incident happened when a manaccosted the lady who was entering the flat after buying milk. In thepretext of asking her an address, he followed her into the flat andpulled at her five-sovereign mangalsutra. Even though she tried tohold on to her chain and shouted loudly, the guy still managed to pryoff her chain. He immediately ran out of the flat and got into a waitingauto and sped away. We later came to know from our milk vendor thatsimilar incidents had taken place with two more women the previousmorning on Jubilee Road. However I am not aware if any policecomplaint was lodged in any of the above mentioned cases. I appealto women in the neighbourhood to be careful and not to wear anyjewellery when they venture out on early morning household er-rands. – Balaji, Subramaniam Street, West Mambalam, Ph:98401 07357

Power connection given to building flouting normsSir, Electricity connection was denied to a building just opposite

the T. Nagar MLA’s office (Usman Road, T. Nagar) as completioncertificate was not issued to it by CMDA for violating variousconstruction norms. It had earlier housed Sri SankarapandianStores. Hence, the store was lit up with the help of gensets. As therewas no business activity throughout, it wore a deserted a look. As perthe CMDA’s website, this building is listed under the Violationcategory. For the past few weeks, extensive interior and exteriorwork has been taken up to spruce up the building. This indicates thatit will soon become operational. The building owners have probablymanaged to get power connection by taking refuge under the Section113C of Tamilnadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, which hasbecome a blessing in disguise for the building owners to knowinglyviolate the rules, thereby overlooking the mandatory requirement ofobtaining completion certificate. It is not known how a buildingunder violation can take up renovation/rectification work, therebyviolating the norms again and again. Complaints made by theAssociation to CMDA have had no effect. – T. Nagar Residents’Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Remove encroachments before starting ‘Project Skywalk’Sir, This refers to the proposal of the Chennai Corporation to build

a skywalk between Mambalam Railway Station and T. Nagar BusTerminus to facilitate hassle-free movement of the public, at a costof Rs. 20 crores. At present, the pedestrians are forced to wadethrough the ever-busy Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street/Railway Border Road. What one could infer from the above proposalis that the Corporation does not want to remove the encroachmentsfrom Ranganathan Street, Natesan Street and Railway Border Road.Is it an uphill task to remove the encroachments? Will not theinaction encourage proliferation? While the construction of the sky-walk is welcome to provide immediate relief to the pedestrians, theCorporation should remove all the encroachments from the abovementioned roads. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Magistrate’s probe intobiker’s death sparks mob fury

A magistrate’s investigation on May 10 at the accident site on 80Feet Road (K.K. Nagar) where a day earlier a young man had died andtwo others were injured while allegedly attempting to evade the policesparked off violence by a local mob that resorted to damaging publicproperty and squatting on the road and blocking traffic.

On May 9, V. Selvam was riding on the road on a bike with his twofriends Raja and Vignesh when two traffic policemen tried to stop thebike.

According to witnesses, Selvam tried to evade the policemen butlost control of the bike after one of the constables struck him. The bikerammed against a median and steel rod pierced Selvam’s abdomen. It is further alleged that instead of helping the bleeding Selvam, thetwo policemen pulled him off the railing and dragged him by the legsto the road. Raja and Vignesh escaped with injuries as they werethrown off the bike. Some of the enraged onlookers attacked thepolicemen. Selvam died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The next day when Magistrate T. Jayashree (of Saidapet Court)arrived at the accident site for a probe, a local mob went berserk andstarted damaging public property. Police had to resort to lathi chargeto disperse the mob but another group of protesters staged a sit-in onthe road, blocking traffic for more than two hours and raising slogansto demand the arrest of two policemen.

Jayashree recorded statements from Raja, Vignesh and 13 othereye witnesses. She also checked security camera footage and cellphone video clips of the accident. She then went to GovernmentRoyapettah Hospital, where two doctors conducted a videographedautopsy of Selvam’s body.

Police officers said that the department has placed the two police-men in vacancy reserve.
