What is a smartphone?

A phone that is more technologically advanced than a basic phone.

Smartphones have more advanced computing ability and can be thought of as a handheld computer integrated into a mobile phone.

According to a study by ComScore, in 2010 over 45.5 million people in the United States owned smartphones.

History of the smartphone

The first smartphone was called “Simon”.

It was created by IBM in 1992 and sold in the US from 1993.

It was a mobile phone, basic computer, pager and fax machine.

It cost $899 in 1993.

The first popular smartphone was the Nokia Communicator.

Released in 1996. The phone looked like a

normal (but very big) phone on the outside but opened to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard.

The Communicator was able to connect to the Internet (VERY slowly...)

The first Blackberry was released in 2002.

The original Blackberry had a monochrome (black and white) screen and was used for email, surfing the Internet, fax and phone services.

The first iPhone was introduced in 2007.

The iPhone allows users to surf the web, watch videos, play games or listen to music.

iPhone users can download apps (applications) that can add different functions to the phone.

Some universities and schools use BlackBerries as a to communicate, give out and receive assignments.

Smartphones in business

Many business people use smartphones as an important tool for their career.

You can sign in to the office, check your email, schedule meetings and surf the Internet while you are out of the actual office.

In the last election Barack Obama used his BlackBerry to arrange his appointments and keep in touch with his team while he was on the road.
