From a meeting straight to the race track only possible in the BMW M . BMW M projectengineer Maximilian Ahme is currently drivingthe sharpest company car in the world. Wetalk to him about the fascinating character of the new power saloon.

For more than years, the BMW M has beenregarded as the sportiest saloon in the world. Whatmakes the fth-generation model even better thanits predecessors?Ahme: Like every previous BMW M , it is a wolf in sheeps clothing. On the one hand a comfortablesaloon, on the other a racing car. And both withstate-of-the-art design and optimum efciency.

So what are the gures behind this apparentcontradiction?Our new eight-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbotechnology reaches hp at , , rpmand develops Nm of torque. It is one of the fewengines that unites two things: turbocharging andhigh engine speeds. Yet it also has a remarkably lowaverage fuel consumption of . litres per km.This gure is % lower than that of the previousmodel, despite increased performance.

What technology enables this strong performance?We work with two precisely responding chargersand a special manifold for the optimised exhaustsystem. On top of that, theres High PrecisionInjection, variable lift of the intake valves and

adjustable camshafts. And because our enginedevelops so much power, we completely lled theavailable space under the bonnet with coolers.

What are the special features of the cooling system?It is an extremely complex solution with a lie-atoil cooler and two external coolers for the charge air.We have one circuit for low temperatures and onefor high. The charge air to each cylinder bank iscooled separately and we even air-condition theengine electronics.

In addition to engine performance, BMW M driversattach great importance to sharp handling and bitingtraction. What does the new BMW M of fer in theseareas?We continue to use the precise and sensitivehydraulic steering system. In conjunction with thepowerful rear-wheel drive, the driver gets a genuinefeel for the road and the forces on the front wheels.A new M differential lock also increases traction onthe rear axle and provides even greater agility.

The previous lock was already a big plus point onfast bends, undulating roads or high-power driving.How is the new one better?The Active M Dif ferential lock adjusts electronicallyand in advance. The previous system only lockedwith a wheelspin on the rear axle. Now we can steerthe lock proactively. If the accelerator is engagedand the sensors anticipate wheelspin based on thecurrent driving situation, locking torque is applied tothe differential. This prevents a wheel from spinning,power is optimally placed on the tarmac and thedriving situation is dynamically controlled. That feelsbetter for the driver.

Are there any more advantages to the newrear-axle lock?The new lock is completely off during normaldriving, so the new M is even smoother when thedriver brakes sharply or steers spontaneously. Thiswas evident during our ne-tuning test drives on

race tracks like the legendary Nrburgring. The lockalso stabilises the vehicle in high-speed lane orother load changes.

The technical nesse of the BMW M makesfor a fascinating drive. You have already coveredmany kilometres in this sharp company car. Whatimpresses you the most?The unique technology. From the engine, thetransmission and the electronic dampers to thecompletely reworked suspension, its the perfectsymbiosis of business and motor sport. On the onehand you can drive comfortably for long stretchesand on the other, you can be ready for the racetrackat any time at the touch of a button. The switchhappens via the two M Drive buttons on the steeringwheel. The driver can congure these in advanceaccording to preference. The result is a fantasticfeeling: control and freedom.

The BMW Head-Up Display withM-specic display projects all relevantdriving data and, if requested, SpeedLimit Info directly onto the windscreen.

The data speaks for itself: Nm, hp ( kW) . seconds from to km/h.As a high-revving engine, the eight-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo unit in the newBMW M makes a singularly forceful statement when it comes to performanceand acceleration. The combined forces of M-typical linear delivery and enormousthrust from the double turbocharger fully exploit the superb pulling power of thehigh-performance engine. The generous dimensions of the intercoolers and thepatented TwinScroll charging concept ensure extraordinary responsiveness notexpected of a turbo. Huge torque is available across a wide engine speed rangewith emphatic forward thrust on tap from just over idle right through to high revs.Thanks to Valvetronic and High Precision Injection, the engine also sets benchmarkswhen it comes to the performance to fuel consumption ratio. In combination withBMW EfcientDynamics features, such as the Auto Start/Stop function and BrakeEnergy Regeneration, the result is average consumption of just . litres per km.

TwinScroll turbocharger with a cross-bank exhaust manifold: the exhaustows from each of two cylinder pairs with a ring interval are combinedand routed along separate channels before reaching the turbine wheels of theturbochargers. This guarantees that gas ow is not compromised. Its a highlyefcient charging concept that leads to optimum energy transfer and, therefore,extremely spontaneous reponsiveness.

High torque is available across an extremely broadrange of engine speeds: from , , or little morethan idle, to a high-revving , rpm. It meansconsistently strong performance and linear powerdelivery.

Traditional rules do not apply to an exceptional car like the new BMW M . As anindependent production of BMW M GmbH, it is faithful to the M philosophy andperfectly combines high performance with optimum everyday practicality.

To full these high aspirations, the intricately constructed M high-performancechassis has been redeveloped from scratch. Its perfect tuning is the result of testson the famous Northern Loop of the Nrburgring, the hardest test conditions forhigh-performance cars. The result: maximum dynamics and agility, plus optimumprecision and control all conveyed through fascinatingly authentic driving feel.

Targeted stiffening measures lead to excellent driving stability and steering precision.The front axle, for instance, is rmly secured to the body with an aluminium stiffeningplate. Something else that cant be seen, but can be felt. For the rst time in theM , the Active M Differential on the rear axle ensures outstanding accelerationand guarantees improved traction even on extremely fast bends. Here, DynamicDamping Control also comes into play and adjusts the suspension, according toyour preferences, in three modes: Comfort, Sport or Sport+. It means you canexperience familiar roads as new every time. Additionally, the M Drive buttons onthe steering wheel offer pre-programmed congurations for either a sporty or acomfortable drive. One of these is M Dynamic Mode. For a particularly authenticdriving experience, it enables optimum use of longitudinal and lateral dynamicspotential by increasing the threshold of intervention of the Dynamic Stability Control(DSC) system so it only intervenes in critical situations.

The M high-performance suspension in combination with the seven-speed MDouble Clutch transmission delivers the power of the new BMW M directlyto the road. And thanks to the compound brakes, the car also amazes with itsexcellent braking power and stability.

DEVELOPED ON THE RACE TRACK.BUILT FOR EVERYDAY LIFE.

Active M Differential. This optimises traction at full power even in tight bends,during high-speed cornering and on variable road surfaces. An electronic controlunit links the active system and DSC and proactively ensures the intelligent use of locking torque in every driving situation. In this way, no drive power is wasted andimproved handling and agility are guaranteed.
