The MA rating provides the Navy withsecurity specialists who performantiterrorism, force protection, physicalsecurity, and law enforcement duties on landand at sea. Due to the unique functions ofthe MA, strict adherence to eligibility criteria
must be maintained.
What They Do
MAs are the Navys security and forceprotection professionals. An MA mayoperate a force protection watercraft, directan investigation, control a base access point,or supervise a K-9 asset. Some specific MAduties are listed below:
Conduct waterborne security patrol andinterdiction operations.
Conduct U. S. Customs inspections.
Conduct base security patrols.
Conduct base access and entry control
operations. Implement aircraft and flightline security
standards.
Conduct law enforcement operations.
Provide Oil Platform protection. Conduct river security operations.
Provide protective service to highranking dignitaries and governmentofficials.
Supervise K-9 explosive and narcoticsdetection operations/missions.
Perform physical security inspections.
Conduct preliminary investigations intoUCMJ violations.
Organize and train security forcepersonnel.
Conduct crime prevention programs. Operate brigs (jails).
Perform weapons and funds escorts.
Credit Recommendations
The American Council on Educationrecommends that semester hour credits beawarded in the vocational certificate andlower-division bachelor/associate degreecategories for courses taken in this rating oncriminal investigation, criminal law, reportwriting, human relations/applied psychology,corrections procedures and instructor trainingtechniques
Qualifications and Interests
Those personnel who want to qualify for theMA rating should be people oriented,dedicated, resourceful, and versatile. Theyshould possess strong writing and speakingskills, a good memory, and the ability toconduct detailed work while maintainingaccurate records.
Prospective MAs should possess physicalstrength, manual dexterity, and competencewith tools, equipment and machines.
Working EnvironmentMAs may expect to be assigned to duty atshore stations in the United States andoverseas; aboard ships as either ships
company or embarked security team; or aspart of a maritime expeditionary securitysquadron. The work environment varieswidely with individual assignments. MAs arecurrently serving in expeditionary securitylocations worldwide and providing landwardand seaward security in support of JointService operations.
Opportunities
Opportunities for placement are excellent forqualified personnel. Individual motivation,ability, and work ethic will determine how faran MA can advance in the enlisted or officerranks during a 20- to 30-year career. An MAwho has attained the rank of E-6 may be
eligible to apply for the Limited Duty Officer(LDO) Program. An MA who has achievedthe rank of E-7 may be eligible to apply forthe Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Program.Both of these programs enable an MA tobecome a Security Specialist in the officerranks.
Career Outlook
In the Navy Security Field, the MA will find avaried and challenging field of work withunmatched potential for personal growth andprofessional development. He or she willhave opportunity to develop problem solving,critical thinking, leadership, andorganizational skills. The MA will developpractical knowledge and experienceunmatched in the civilian world. Should theMA decide to separate, all training andexperience can directly transfer to homelandsecurity or law enforcement agencies.These training and development factors,along with a fantastic opportunity for travel,make any decision to leave the Navy a verydifficult one.
