Principal’s Message  Spring is in the air and many activities are happening in the school. It is wonderful to see all the students participating in extracurricular activities and I want to thank all the parents and teachers who are volunteering their time to make these opportunities happen.

However, this has led to an unintended struggle with the supervision of younger siblings of students who are participating in extracurricular activities. We do not have supervision available before school or after school for siblings. For the last few weeks, we have had many students wandering the halls and disrupting the tasks that need to be done before and after school. I ask that you please make alternate arrangements for siblings so that their safety is ensured and there are no disruptions at school.

We continue to focus on improving our teaching strategies for reading. We are also beginning to work on improving our teaching strategies in numeracy and spent the last PD day working on modeling both literacy and numeracy strategies that include clear learning intentions and opportunities for feedback. We will also be developing a whole school lesson plan to seek feedback from students about their learning and their sense of belonging. Finally, as always, for

the most up-to-date information, I will continue to post a weekly schedule to our school website (http://south-sahali.sd73.bc.ca/)

Thank you,

Blake Buemann Principal

A few reminders for the school year:

● We have many students with nut allergies and thus have some Nut Free classrooms in the school. Please know if your child is in such a classroom and if so, refrain from sending your child to school with any nut based products. Thank you!

Transfer Requests We recognize that students may need to transfer schools for a variety of reasons. If you need to make an application for transfer, please be aware that there is a district policy in place to ensure a fair and consistent process. This policy, “School Boundaries and Student Transfer Requests Administrative Procedure 305”, can be found on the School District 73 website: www.sd73.bc.ca

Drama Club - Beauty and the Beast Our drama club is busily preparing for their performance of Beauty and the Beast. They are practicing twice a week to prepare a wonderful show for our school community. As with any play, it is more exciting to perform before a live audience. Therefore you are all invited to attend. There will be two showings:

May 7 - 10:45am May 7 - 1:30pm

Science Fair Families are welcome to join us at SSES, as students become the teachers. March 6th from 9:00am-10:10am is our school wide science fair.

Let us blow your minds with our amazing science projects.

Leadership Fundraiser The Leadership group at SSES has been busy this February planning different important events.

One of our school focuses will be to reduce garbage at SSES. Please help us by supporting these neat ideas!

In February, we worked on decreasing single use plastic-wraps in our lunches by using reusable containers.

In March, our goal will be to recycle as much items as possible on Thursdays hot lunch meals; producing less garbage.

In April, our goal is to encourage students to bring their own spoons and forks to eat their lunches.

The Leadership group is also organizing a fundraiser as Easter is coming by selling Purdys Chocolates.

When we sell $500 worth of chocolates, we will earn 25% profit. All proceeds will go to our WE Village in Tanzania.

Purdys is a Canadian based company. Their chocolates are made with 100% sustainable cocoa, which is important to us.

Here is the link to go look at their catalog and place an order. Orders must be done by March 31st. Delivery will be on April 7th. Once you have clicked on the link, you have to register or login to your account.

Frisbee & Badminton Rackets If anyone has Frisbees or badminton rackets in their garage that they do not use, please consider donating them to SSES for use during PE classes.

Lost & Found Two Gift Cards have been found in the school. If you think they may be yours and you can identify them, please contact the school office.

Track & Field Dates This is just a brief early warning of the School, Zone and District Track & Field dates for this year. As in past years, all students in grades 4 to 7 will participate in the School Track & Field day. Based on their performance, some of our students will be invited to attend the Zone Track Meet and possibly the District Track Meet if they do well again.

For our School Track & Field day, we choose to host it at the Tournament Capital Center (TCC) outdoor track because of the superior facilities which allows a richer experience for our students. To make this happen in one day though, we need students in grades 4 to 7 to be dropped off at the TCC outdoor track in the morning instead of at school. We recognize this is not always convenient but it is necessary to fit all the events into one day. Mme Dumas or Mr. Buemann will be there in the morning at 7:30am for those families that need an earlier drop off.

Students will be bussed at the end of the day from TCC to the school by 2:40pm. Thank you for your patience and support with this change. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school. Here are the dates:

School Track & Field - Tuesday May 5 Zone 1000m / 1200m - Wednesday May 6 (9:30-11:30) Zone Track & Field - Tuesday May 12 District 1000m / 1200m - Thursday May 14 (9:30-11:30) District Track & Field - Friday May 22

Thank you Flutter Buys Thrift shop

Thank you to the kind folks at Flutter Buys Thrift shop for their donation of materials to make the costumes for the spring play of Beauty and The Beast.

Please thank them by supporting the thrift shop and their charity, the Kamloops Hospice Association, next time you are looking to purchase or donate gently used items to a worthwhile charity and a good community supporter.

Reporting an Absence Consistent attendance is a vital component of any program and absolutely necessary in order for a child to succeed. Significant student absences and lateness will impact your child’s ability to do well and achieve success in the educational program we offer at South Sa-Hali Elementary. However, on occasion it is necessary for your child to be away due to illness or other factors. Please call 1-844-350-2647 or visit: go.schoolmessenger.ca if your child is going to be late or absent. You may also download the "SchoolMsgr" app for iPhone or for Android and follow the instructions. If you need to pick up your child from school for an appointment you need to sign your child in and out at the office.

SSES Handbook For a copy of our South Sa-Hali Handbook, please visit the school website and look in the “What’s Happening / News” section and then in “Newsletters” section.
