The play starts off with three mysterious witches who plan to meet again to see Macbeth

Macbeth is the Thane of Glamis and a well respected knight of the King of Scotland (Duncan)

Banquo is a knight of the King Duncan and friend of Macbeth

Macbeth and Banquo hear about the prophecies from the witches on the way back from battle

Macbeth learns that he will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland

The witches’ prophecy starts Macbeth thinking of murdering King Duncan to become the King of Scotland

enough to kill King Duncan by himself

She also learns that King Duncan is visiting her castle (“perfect timing” for Macbeth to murder)

Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to act normally when their guests arrive at the castle

Macbeth backs out of the plan because he is not ready to kill

Lady Macbeth gets angry and pressures him

Macbeth agrees to go kill King Duncan

Act 1-Planning Out the Murder

When Macbeth goes to see Duncan, he sees a dagger.

He does not know if it is his hallucination

However, Macbeth goes to do his murder.

Act 2- The Murder

Lady Macbeth is waiting for Macbeth to return from his murder.

Macbeth is freaked out from the murder scene and takes the bloody dagger with him.

Lady Macbeth has to clean up after Macbeth.

Act 2- The Wait

The murder of King Duncan is discovered.

Macbeth’s servants are accused of killing King Duncan.

Macbeth kills the servants and says he was angry that they killed the king.

MacDuff is a Scottish noble and suspicious when Macbeth kills body guards

Malcolm and Donalbain are the sons of the king and they decide to flee because they feel like they are in danger

Act 2-The Discovery

Ross is a Scottish noble Ross is talking to an old man

about supernatural events that happened during the night of the murder like Duncan’s horses trying to eat each other

MacDuff shows up and says he is going back to his castle

Macbeth is going be crowned King of Scotland

Act 2: Aftermath of the Murder

Macbeth is thinking about the witches’ prophecy that Banquo’s descendants will become king

In an aside, Macbeth reveals he does not want Banquo’s children to be king.

Macbeth meets with some murderers to arrange for the killing of Banquo and Fleance (his son).

Macbeth tells the murderers that Banquo is their enemy and his own as well.

Banquo is killed, but Fleance escapes

Act 3: Plans to Kill Banquo and Fleance

Banquo is killed.

Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a big banquet for all the Lords

Macbeth thinks he sees Banquo’s ghost sitting in his chair and starts talking to it

The other lords are suspicious of Macbeth’s weird actions

Lady Macbeth asks all the lords to go home and reassures them that Macbeth is just stressed out

Act 3: The Banquet

Macbeth tells his wife that he is haunted by bad dreams

He says he will go ask the witches for more predictions so he can know in advance what will happen next.
