MacBook Pro 15" Logic Board's Power InputCircuit Repai

Some parts between power-connector (MagSafe) and battery can get destroyed by using a wrongpower adapter. This guide will show you some basics of the supply circuit, and how to repair it.

INTRODUCTION

If you use a power adapter which is to weak for your Mac Book (e.g. 60W for a MBP 15" which isspecified for a 80W power adapter) the following should happen from a theoretical point of view: Thepower adapter is overloaded and heats up until the internal thermal protection switches it off savely. -- And this happened in real live: The adapter blew up in a way, that it delivered one last powerfulcurrent pulse which also destroyed parts of the logic board. The Mac Book is still fully operationalwith battery, but can not be charged nor powered any more, even with a new power adapter.

The disassembling steps are referenced to MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2010 Logic BoardReplacement. For this particular guide it is not necessary to unmount the fans, heatpipes andspeaker-microphone-block. Just skip the related steps.

Since the topology of the circuit between power connector and battery is common technique, thisguide might fit to other logic boards too.

Étape 1 — Lower Case

Remove the following ten screwssecuring the lower case to the uppercase:

Three 13.5 mm (14.1 mm) Phillipsscrews.

Seven 3 mm Phillips screws.

When removing these screws, notehow they come out at a slight angle.They must be reinstalled the sameway.

Étape 2

Using both hands, lift the lower casenear the vent to pop it off two clipssecuring it to the upper case.

Remove the lower case and set itaside.



Étape 3 — Logic Board

Remove the three T6 Torx screwssecuring the right fan to the uppercase.

Étape 4

Use the flat end of a spudger to pry the right fan connector up out of its socket on the logic board.

It is useful to twist the spudger axially from beneath the fan cable wires to release the connector.

Remove the right fan from the upper case.



Étape 5

Use the flat end of a spudger to prythe AirPort / Bluetooth ribbon cableup off its socket on the logic board.

Fold the AirPort / Bluetooth ribboncable back to keep it out of the wayof the logic board.

Étape 6

Disconnect the iSight cable bypulling its connector toward theoptical drive opening.



Étape 7

Use the flat end of a spudger to prythe optical drive cable connector upfrom the logic board.

Fold the optical drive cable back tokeep it out of the way of the logicboard.

Étape 8

Carefully pull the subwoofer/rightspeaker cable up to lift its connectorout of its socket on the logic board.



Étape 9

Use the flat end of a spudger to prythe hard drive cable connector upout of its socket on the logic board.

Étape 10

Remove the two short Phillips screws securing the small EMI shield to the logic board.

Remove the EMI shield from the logic board.



Étape 11

Use the flat end of a spudger to prythe trackpad cable connector up outof its socket on the logic board.

Étape 12

Use your fingernail to carefully flip up the keyboard ribbon cable retaining flap.

Make sure you are flipping up the retaining flap, not the socket itself.

Use the tip of a spudger to pull the keyboard ribbon cable straight out of its socket.



Étape 13

Use the flat end of a spudger to prythe battery indicator cable connectorup out of its socket on the logicboard.

Étape 14

Grab the plastic pull tab secured to the display data cable lock and rotate it toward the DC-In sideof the computer.

Pull the display data cable straight out of its socket.

Do not pull the cable upward, as the socket is very fragile. Pull the cable parallel to the face of thelogic board toward the corner of the upper case.



Étape 15

Use the tip of a spudger or your fingernail to flip up the retaining flap on the keyboard backlightribbon cable socket.

Be sure you are prying up on the retaining flap, not the socket itself.

Pull the keyboard ribbon cable straight out of its socket.

Étape 16

Remove the following screws:

Seven 3.3 mm T6 Torx screwssecuring the logic board to theupper case.

Two 8 mm T6 Torx screwssecuring the DC-In board to theupper case.

Do not remove the logic board yet!There are components on theunderside of the logic boardattached to the the upper case thatmust first be disconnected.



Étape 17

Carefully lift the logic boardassembly from the left side and workit out of the upper case, minding theport side that may get caught duringremoval.

Do not entirely remove the logicboard yet!

Étape 18

Lift the logic board enough to gainclearance and use a spudger to prythe microphone up off the uppercase.



Étape 19

Slide the logic board away from theport openings and lift the assemblyout of the upper case.

Before reinstalling the logic board, itis easiest to press the microphonedown into its housing in the leftspeaker to keep it in place.

To avoid ESD damage, be sure tolay your logic board on a soft, staticfree surface during service.



Étape 20 — The schematic

The picture shows a schematicwhich is similar to Mac Book Pro'spower input circuit. The seriescomponents L1, F1, T1, T2 have todraw the full power, so those are ofinterest for us. With an ohmmeteryou can check these parts.

L1: Since I could not figure out themanufacturer of this common modechoke I recommend to use a newMagSafe PCB.

F1: According to the printing on thispart it is very likely that this is aLittelfuse 0469006 6A fuse.

T1, T2: Both MOSFETs areHAT1128R type. Since this part isobsolete I took IRF9317PbF

To reassemble your device, follow the prerequisited guide in reverse order.

Étape 21 — Where are the parts?

The picture shows where therelevant parts are placed on thelogic board. F1, T1 and T2 aremarked green. L1 is mounted on theMagSafe PCB and so not seen onthe picture.

After you have figured out which ofthese parts (L1, F1, T2, T2) aredefective you can change them. Irecommend to replace bothMOSFETs if there is at least onedamaged.

After replacing the defective partsyou can check the functionality byconnecting the battery and thepower adapter to the logic board. Ifeverything is fine the LED of theMagSafe connector will light upgreen and switch to orange if batterywill be charged. Be very careful.
