Municipal Notes

The Council and staff have been spending a significant

amount of time finalizing the 2019 budget. As always,

every tax dollar is needed in many places.

In January Council and Municipal Staff met with the

Senior Environment Officer from the Ministry of the

Environment and Climate Change to discuss our

options for our two landfill sites that are nearing

their capacity. A productive meeting provided a possi-

ble short-term solution which will be pursued. The

next step afterward will be for the Municipality to

work with the Ministry on the possible expansion of

our existing sites.

In January the Woodland Arena held its first Atom

Hockey Tournament in many years which was a huge

success. Six teams and one hundred players

participated. Recreational curling started as well with

four teams. A new Arena Committee has been formed

from applicants who submitted their names to

Council. The new committee will work with the Council

Rep and Arena Management in advising on the arena

operations. Members of the community who may be

interested in volunteering to help at the arena can

contact the Municipal Office or Arena Staff.

In 2018 and at the start of 2019 our Public Works

Department contracted out and completed

approximately 12 kilometers of roadside brushing on

our Municipal Roads. An additional 4 kilometers is

planned to be brushed in the next two months if

conditions are favourable. This brush removal will help

with encroachment of the road edge. Areas that are

targeted for cleaning are covered with heavy brush

along the right of ways. Manual brushing efforts are

planned later this summer into the fall in areas where

lighter roadside brush exists.

Local volunteers requested Council’s permission to do

minor repairs to the Eagle River Recreation Centre, to

repair minor damage to the walls, painting and

washrooms. The volunteers donated their time and

used donated paint from Timbermax in Dryden.

Council wishes to thank the volunteers for their com-

munity spirit which will help greatly in future use and

rental of the facility. Also, a thank you to Timbermax

for their generous donation.

Municipal Council would like to provide residents more

communication opportunity to discuss general items

of interest in the community. Therefore, the Mayor

and Council will remain at council chambers for ap-

proximately ½ hour after the closure of the 2nd Gen-

eral Council meeting which occurs on the 4th Monday

of each month. The first opportunity will be on Mon-

day, March 25, 2019. A maximum of five minutes will

be provided per person. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor or

designate will oversee the discussions an protocol.

These discussions are informal and no records or

minutes will be taken. This does not replace the pre-

sent formal Delegation request to present a Deputa-

tion to the council. Delegations are still required

to complete a written request at the Municipal Office

to be placed on the agenda. These formal delegation

presentations will be documented in the minutes of

the General Meeting. We hope the public will come

out and participate in these discussions.

If you have not received your tax bill please contact the Municipal Office at (807)-227-2633. Failure to receive tax notice does not relieve the taxpayer from payment of taxes nor liability or penalty for late payment.

Dog Tags are due for renewal on March 31, 2019 at the cost of $10.00 a tag.

The Public Works Department would like to remind people that it is illegal to push snow onto and across Municipal Roads as stated in the Highway Traffic Act. The Highway Traffic Act R.S.O. 1990, C. H.8, S.

181 states: “No person shall deposit snow or ice on a roadway without permission in

writing to do so from the Ministry or road authority responsible for maintenance of the

road”. The penalty on conviction is a fine.

HEATING EQUIPMENT & APPLIANCES SAFETY

During the winter months, close attention needs to be paid to heating equipment and

appliances – fireplaces, furnaces, chimneys and vents and space heaters – as they have

the potential to be serious fire hazards.

Tips to minimize the fire hazard risk:

Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a registered fuel contractor.

Keep chimneys and intake/exhaust vents for furnaces and heating appliances free of debris, ice and snow accumulations to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) build-up from inefficient combustion.

Burn dry, well-seasoned wood in fireplaces and woodstoves to reduce the risk of excessive creosote build-up in chimneys.

Allow ashes from your fireplace or woodstove to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the container outside.

Keep space heaters at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn, including curtains, upholstery and clothing.

Replace worn or damaged electrical wires and connections on vehicles and extension cords and use the proper gauge extension cord for vehicle block heaters.

Consider using approved timers for vehicle block heaters rather than leaving heaters on all night.

Ensure that vehicles are not left running inside any garage or building.

Ensure there is a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home as required by the Ontario Fire Code.

The Ontario Fire Code requires that carbon monoxide alarms are installed outside all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.

Tips so that everyone is prepared and knows what to do in the case of a fire:

Develop a home fire escape plan – sit down with everyone in your household and discuss how each person will get out of the home in a fire.

Practise your escape plan with everyone in your home.

Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room – discuss an alternate escape route such as a window, in case the door of a room is blocked by smoke or fire. Make sure all windows are not frozen shut and can be opened easily.

Determine who will be responsible for helping young children, older adults, people with disabilities or anyone else who may need assistance – and that everyone will be able to get out quickly.

Most fire deaths are the result of smoke inhalation – make sure everyone knows to get low and go un-der the smoke to the nearest safe exit.

Choose a meeting place outside, a safe distance from your home - A tree, street light or a neighbour’s home are all good choices. In case of fire, everyone should go directly to this meeting place to be ac-counted for.

Ensure that everyone knows to GET OUT & STAY OUT – never re-enter a burning building. Important tips during winter months:

Ensure all entry/exits in your home are cleared from snow, so that everyone can get out quickly in case of a fire.

Keep driveways plowed wide enough for large emergency vehicles to be able to easily access your home.

Also, if there is a fire hydrant near your home, you can assist the fire department by keeping the hy-drant clear of snow, so it can be quickly and easily located.

Finding the Meaning of Grief through the Five Stages of Grief

Just as the book On Death and Dying taught us the five stages of death—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the grieving process

and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, including sections on sadness, hauntings, dreams, isolation, and healing. Ten years after the death of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, this commemorative edition of her final book combines practical wisdom, case studies, and the authors’ own experiences and spiritual insight to explain how the process of grieving helps us live with loss.

Book Club meetings will be one and a half hours approximately, once a week for 4 weeks. Books will be provided and are yours to keep.

Meetings will be relaxed, interactive and confidential; we will discuss the book and share our

thoughts on what we’ve discovered and what has helped us as individuals.

Sessions are scheduled to run Thursdays from March 7th through March 28th 1:30 pm in the

downstairs boardroom of the clinic. You do not need to be a patient of the clinic to enroll.

There are only 5 seats available for this program. Once you have registered please come in to get

your book at least a week prior to the start date. Program will repeat if required.
