Machine Embroidery Quilting Here’s a tutorial for making a cute little machine embroidered mug rug! We’ll embroider through 3 layers (quilt top, batting, and backing fabric), so the embroidery will work as the quilting, too!

Supplies 2 pink charm squares 2 blue charm squares Fabric larger than your machine embroidery hoop Batting larger than your machine embroidery hoop 505 Spray Adhesive Thread Fabric for binding

Piecing Hourglass Blocks

Machine settings are the same as what you’d use for piecing Half Square Triangle Units with the laser light as your guide instead of drawing a line down the center of your square with a pencil.

Using the laser light as y our guide, the J foot, and the settings shown to the left, stitch ¼” from the center on both sides. Repeat with your other 2 squares.

Cut your fabric between the two rows of stitching, then without moving your fabric, cut it from corner to corner the other way as well. Repeat with second set of sewn squares.

Sew right sides together. Then square up. 4 hourglass blocks from 4 charm squares in just a matter of minutes!

Sew them together with a ¼” seam allowance and you have a mug rug quilt top!

Make a quilt sandwich! Place your backing wrong side up, then batting over that and then your cute little mug rug quilt top right side up. Adhere them together with 505 Spray Adhesive.

Machine Embroidery Quilting

Hoop your quilt, centering the quilt top within the hoop.

Use the needle drop laser light to line up the center of your quilt top with the center of the design to be stitched.

Stitch out your design! In this case, I chose a bird design that came pre-loaded on the machine and pink machine embroidery thread.
