1 CUSTOMER SAFETY NOTICE

THE TU-14 AS SUPPLIED TO YOU MUST ONLY BE USED WITH ALL THE GUARDS AND SAFETY DEVICES IN PLACE AND SECURE TO MEET THE INTENDED REQUIREMENTS. THE SAFETY INTERLOCKS MUST NOT BE TAMPERED WITH OR OVERRIDDEN IN ANY WAY. SHOULD ANY GUARDS, INTERLOCK, OR ANY SAFETY DEVICE BE FOUND TO BE DAMAGED OR NON-OPERATIVE THE MACHINE CANNOT BE USED UNTIL APPROPRIATE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN EFFECTED.

All safety guards and interlocks should be tested daily or at the beginning of each shift change. It is recommended that these checks be documented. All electrical enclosures must be kept closed and secured. Only authorized persons with appropriate training should access these enclosures. In the event that it is required to access electrical enclosures with main power on, only persons properly trained and familiar with acceptable Safety Regulations may do so. 2 MACHINE DESCRIPTION The Artos TU-14/TU-14HD is a uniquely designed wire-crimping machine offering complete control of your crimping process. 2.1 SPECIFICATIONS

Wire Range Standard - Up to 12 AWG (4 mm2) HD - Up to 10 AWG (5.5 mm2) Crimping Force Standard - 13 kN (3000 lbs) HD - 20 kN (4500 lbs) Voltage 200-240V, 6A, 50/60 Hz, 1ph Pneumatic supply 6 – 8 bar (80 PSI) Only needed if air feed applicators are used. Stroke 40 mm fixed (1.57 inch) or 30mm fixed (1.18 inch) Shunt Height 135.78 mm (5.346 inch) or 119.7mm (4.713 inch). Position can be calibrated with a dial in the RAM and proper shut height measuring device.

It is suggested theTU-14 be bolted to the table. There are 3 holes in the base for this purpose. Use fastener that will not protrude above the base plate as to not interfere with the scrap tray.

3 Operation 3.1 Operator control functions The operator buttons control the following:

• [1] Emergency Stop. When depressed, the Emergency stop will shut down all power to the motor controls and pneumatic controls. This will stay off until a Master Start is initiated.

• [5] Master Start. When depressed, the Master Start will reinitialize the TU-14. turning on the power to the motor control and pneumatics.

• [2]Terminal Feed. When depressed, the Terminal feed will cycle the terminal feed valve one full cycle. (200 ms)

• [3[ [4] Clockwise / Counterclockwise Jogs. When depressed, these will move the ram of the press in one direction. When the counter direction button is depressed, the ram will go in opposite direction.

3.2 Applicator Installation

Shut Height Adjustment Warning!! This is not an operator adjustment. It is not intended for crimp height adjustment. See Shut Height Adjustment

Applicator adaptor. This captures the ram and drives it up and down,

Applicator Base. This anchors the applicator in place.

The applicator mounting kit shown is for Artos, Tyco, Molex, Mecal, and many other like mounting “Mini” applicators. (Shunt Height is 5.346” = 135.78mm, Stroke is 1.575”= 40mm) Other types may be adaptable. Contact Artos for detail.

3.3 Air Feed Applicators

There are two types of air feed applicators The TU-14 can accommodate both.

• Self-Feeding

• Press Dependant Feeding

The Self-Feeding applicator needs a constant air supply to the applicator. A valve in the applicator actuates the terminal feed when the press strokes.

The Press Dependent Feeding applicators require the press to turn the air on and off to feed the terminal. This is managed by the TU-14 control.

A filtered, regulated air supply must be connected to the press by means of the supplied air line (6mm poly line) The Applicators are connected to the press via the NC, normally closed port and the NO, normally open port.

The Self-Feeding applicator needs a constant air supply and connects to NO port.

The Press Dependent Feeding applicators must be plugged into both the NC port and the NO,

port. The connection that places and the terminal in the fed position connects to the NO port. Applicators with spring returned cylinders would be connected to the NO port.

3.4 Terminal Reel Mounting

The TU 14 has a universal reel-mounting bracket. It can change from Side Feed to End Feed with a minimum of adjustment for reel size.

Rear Side Feed

TO SWITCH REEL POSITION. (from side feed) Lift the terminal bracket off the square pin.

Bracket angle adjustment.

Reel diameter adjustment.

Invert the bracket and rotate it 90 degrees clockwise. Put it back on the square pin.

3.5 Terminating Process

3.5.1 Mechanical Feed Applicators To terminate, simply place the wire in to the terminal to the appropriate position. Step on the foot switch. The press will active. As the ram retreats and the applicator opens, the next terminal will be fed into place. Be prepared to remove the terminated wire quickly as to not interfere with the next terminal.

3.5.2 Self-Feed Applicators To use a Self-feed Applicators the air feed function should be turned off. To do this, simultaneously Press both the Clockwise and the Counterclockwise buttons. This will disable the air-feed valve.

To terminate, simply place the wire in to the terminal to the appropriate position. Step on the foot switch. The press will active. As the ram retreats and the applicator opens, the next terminal will be fed into place, usually at the top of the stroke.

To reactive the feed valve, simultaneously Press both the Clockwise and the Counterclockwise buttons again. This will also reset when the power is turned off.

3.5.3 Press Dependent Feed Applicators To use a Press Dependent Feed Applicators the air fee function must be on. This is the default setting when power is turned on. If the feed function is off simultaneously, press both the Clockwise and the Counterclockwise buttons. This will enable the air-feed valve.

To terminate, simply place the wire in to the terminal to the appropriate position. Step on the foot switch. The press will active. When the ram opens to the top of the cycle, the TU-14 will cycle the valve for 400ms. This will draw the feed back and return to the fed position. The press cannot be cycled again until this 400ms time expires.

4 Maintenance

4.1 Lubrication / Manual Rotation Access

. There are only two grease fittings on the TU-14. (three on the TU-14 HD)On a single shift operation, these should be greased every 6 months. Sooner in multiple shift usage. Use a Lithium Grease. Add grease until you see grease coming out of the slide surfaces. Whip off all excess grease. The best thing you can do for TU-14 is Keep it Clean !

Access for manual rotation. If the applicator becomes jammed and must be opened by manually rotating the TU-14, insert a 17mm (11/16”) socket on a ratchet or breaker bar to turn it. When the socket is inserted it he hole, the power will turn off if on, and will not allow the press to be restarted until removed.

5 Shut (Crimp) Height Setting. The Shut Height, also known as Shunt Height, is the distance between the applicator base and the top driver when at bottom dead center. (5.347+/-.001 / 135,8mm) Most applicator tooling is designed to this closed dimension. This is not the setting to change to modify the crimp. Doing so will effect all your applicators. Crimp adjustment is an applicator adjustment.

5.1 Setting Shut Height – Using Artos calibration bar method. Shut Height is set using a special fixture and test bars. PN’s 5-138986 fixture and 139169 test bar. The fixture is installed as you would the applicator. Insert the test bar in the fixture. Close the guard, master start, click the appropriate terminal icon on the wire end. This will open the Crimping setting window. From there you can cycle the Tunit with the Cycle button..

After crimping the test bar, measure the crimped area. When the shut is correct this should measure .062” (1.57mm) To adjust loosen the clamping screws and rotate the graduate ring. One numbered increment is .006” (,15mm) Tighten clamping screws and test. Repeat as needed.

5.2 Setting Shut Height – Using Calibration gauge. The calibration gauge shown here is for illustrative purposes only. Contact your terminal vendor or terminating unit vendor for available alternatives or contact Artos to order the tool shown above.

1. Install the calibration gauge in the TU-14

2. Install an appropriate wrench through the access ole in the back of the press.

3. Turn the RAM with a wrench, through bottom dead center, the calibration gauge should read 0 on both dials. If not loosen the clamping screws and rotate the graduate ring. One numbered increment is .006” (,15mm) Tighten clamping screws.

4. Repeat step 3 until the readings on both dials are 0.
