Mac fits easily in Active Directory environments, ranging from the most basic to the most detailed integration environments. IT departments have the option to join Mac computers to Active Directory manually using built-in tools in OS X. Or they can automate the process using configuration profiles that can be built with OS X Server Profile Manager or MDM applications. And IT can leverage Active Directory to authenticate users and enforce password policies for all computers within the organization.

OS X also includes native support for Microsoft Exchange. Setup is as easy as typing in a user’s email address and password. So Mac users can use the same Exchange data for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders as they do for other Exchange-compatible clients, including Outlook. Many powerful features, including Global Address List (GAL) and LDAP queries, are supported without any additional software.

Right out of the box, Mac makes it simple for users to quickly join available Wi-Fi networks. OS X has built-in support for industry-standard wireless network protocols to ensure that connections to both corporate and guest networks are secure. OS X also supports standard enterprise VPN technologies, such as Cisco IPSec and L2TP.

SecurityOS X includes advanced security technologies that offer enterprise-grade protection for corporate computers, data, applications, and networks. A series of integrated technologies help protect Mac systems by identifying potential threats, such as malware, network attacks, and unauthorized access.

This layered approach proactively safeguards against threats and provides a secure architecture throughout, without the need for advanced configuration, additional software, or specialized tools. The Mac also meets or exceeds many industry and government regulations.

Page 29: MacInAction 10-06-14 v1-0salesresources.apple.com/pdf/MacInAction.pdf · analysis, fluid dynamics, and more. Popular productivity applications like Microsoft Office run native on

The sophisticated runtime protections in OS X work at the very core of the Mac to help keep users’ systems safe. The Mac uses layers of integrated hardware and software technologies to encrypt and protect data. Mac computers make it easy for organizations and individual users to implement industry-standard encryption technologies, including full disk encryption, secure password management, and remote wipe capabilities.

OS X also has features designed to prevent the accidental exposure of private information like contacts and location. And OS X security preferences contain a range of privacy options that can be managed across installed applications and services.

and power efficiencies were all reasons we

chose Mac.”Laura Cole

Project Coordinator,BiblioTech5

Technologies built into OS X help the Mac connect to secure networks, authenticate users and systems, quarantine and validate incoming files, and protect data in transit. With support for WPA2 Enterprise wireless networking, OS X ensures secure connectivity with Wi-Fi networks. It also includes advanced enterprise VPN technologies such as per-app and on-demand connections and integrates with many popular authentication methods. Files downloaded from Safari, Mail, and Messages are screened to determine if they contain dangerous malware in disguise. And OS X incorporates industry-standard SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), facilitating connections to secure online and internal sites.

Page 31: MacInAction 10-06-14 v1-0salesresources.apple.com/pdf/MacInAction.pdf · analysis, fluid dynamics, and more. Popular productivity applications like Microsoft Office run native on

ManagementOS X supports advanced technologies to ensure that Mac can be managed easily in medium and large-scale environments with minimal overhead. This allows system administrators to choose from a variety of centralized management options that best suit the organization’s needs. In fact, IT can often manage Mac with the same MDM solution already in place for iOS devices.

“With OS X, updates that once took a help desk technician two hours per system are now done

by users. Multiply that by approximately 500 users, and the Mac has given our IT team about

1000 hours back.”Muhammad Jawad

Director of Global IT Operations,CareerBuilder

Page 33: MacInAction 10-06-14 v1-0salesresources.apple.com/pdf/MacInAction.pdf · analysis, fluid dynamics, and more. Popular productivity applications like Microsoft Office run native on

With configuration profiles, a wide variety of settings can be controlled and configured on OS X, including directory service binding, 802.1X configuration, and certificate distribution to Mac management. Configuration profiles allow IT administrators to set management policies that provide granular control of features, preferences, and restrictions on Mac systems. When integrated with an MDM solution, configuration profiles can be wirelessly distributed to Mac systems. This streamlines the process of securing and configuring Mac computers, as well as installing and managing applications. Key accounts, such as Mail, are set up automatically, which means employees can get up and running quickly on Mac.

These policies can be applied to individual users, computers, or groups. Configuration profiles can even be signed and locked to prevent settings from being altered, which helps to ensure that only trusted users and computers can access the corporate network and services.
