It is polite to shake hands. In the Francophone south, close friends may embrace while brushing cheeks
and kissing the air along with a handshake. In the Anglophone north, close friends have a unique handshake in which, as
they pull their hands back they snap the other person’s middle finger with their thumb.
As a sign of respect men often lower their head and avert their eyes when greeting an elder or a superior and elders are greeted first.
Some Muslims will not shake hands across genders Women tend not to look the other person in the eye even if it is another woman If you are invited to a Cameroonian’s home, bring fruit, whiskey, or wine to the
host. Do not bring wine if your host is Muslim. Cameroonians are somewhat formal and believe good table manners
demonstrate respect Many Cameroonians eat with their hands, although foreign guests may be
offered cutlery.
Cameroon Ettiquette
With foreigners the most common greeting is the handshake with a
smile. When shaking hands between themselves Ghanaians will hold the
right hand in the normal manner but will then twist and click each other’s middle finger. Unless you are experienced it is best to stick to a normal handshake!
Christians will generally shake hands between the sexes; practising Muslims often will not shake hands with people of the opposite sex.
Dress well; Ghanaians place a lot of emphasis on how people dress. You may need to remove your shoes.
Ghanaians table manners are relatively formal. Ghanaians always want to protect their own and others’ face as well
as maintain harmonious relationships. As a result they tend to use proverbs, wise sayings, analogies readily.
Ghanaian Ettiquette
A firm handshake with the right hand is
excepted Holding hands with the same sex is accepted
but not with the opposite gender unless the two are married.
Speaking to someone with your hands in your pockets is unacceptable
