The Oxford Dictionary of English defines the e-book as "an electronic version of a printed book,”but e-books can and do exist without any printed equivalent. E-books are usually read on dedicated hardware devices known as e-Readers or e-book devices. Personal computers and some cell phones can also be used to read e-books.

…..the University of NSW library is freeing up space by throwing away scholarly journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries, books in foreign languages and texts on psychology, politics and morality because students prefer to do their research online
Electronic book publishing is going to destroy the major chains. The sort of high volume disposable fiction which is their stock in trade, will migrate almost entirely into electronic form over the next 10 years.John Birmingham

Tertiary education feels the big pinch October 16, 2010 The education sector was always going to be subject to the negative side of the two-speed economy, along with tourism and other services and whatever manufacturing is left. As mining exports and the resurgent farm sector drive the dollar to parity with the US dollar and beyond, and the currencies of rival educational host countries such as Britain take a dive, the cost advantage that our universities and colleges had come to take for granted has been eroded. On top of that, though, education has been hit by two avoidable problems created by our politicians and officials – to the point where it is hitting employment and activity at the high end of the educational pyramid.
Monash University is not some dodgy vocational college getting its just deserts for rorting the student visa system as part of an immigration racket. It is one of the leading eight universities that regularly figure on lists of the top-ranked institutions globally, and a centre of world-leading research. It is now laying off 300 staff and cutting $45 million from its budget, as a result of a slump in overseas student enrolments. Curtin University in Perth, another highly respected institution, is warning of an overall 30 per cent fall in enrolments
by 2015 that could strip 36,000 jobs and $7 billion in revenue from the system.
