Principal’s ReportWhat a fabulous two weeks of learning and fun we have had at Macquarie Fields! Our students have been busy inside and outside of the classroom. I have enjoyed spending time with the students as they engaged in their learning and school life experiences. Thank you to the staff and community for making the start to 2020 a great one for all our students.

During the last fortnight I have had the pleasure of students visiting from 6 Fern (Adam, Iman and Opal) to request permission to commence ‘The Shop’. They were very well spoken and great ambassadors for their class. The shop has commenced selling their items, so please stop by one afternoon and support your local (school) business! As well, a group of students from 6 Fern came and sang a beautiful Pacific Island song. The harmonies were glorious! Lastly, Ruby and Neil from 2 Cotton shared their amazing writing, using similes. The writing was very descriptive and made a wonderful picture in my mind as I was reading. Well done everyone!

Starting Kindergarten with a bang!

Our 124 Kindergarten students have made a marvellous start to school! They have settled so well into school life, following routines and rules beautifully, and most importantly enjoying learning and making new friends! A great start to Kindergarten helps to set up students with a positive attitude towards school which will stay with them for their entire school life. The Kindergarten students have been engaging in many learning activities, including listening to stories, writing simple sentences, counting and learning about places and people at school. Below are two kinder classes that have come up to visit me in my office. Kinder Maple and Kinder Violet, it was lovely having you! Thank you to our families and Kindergarten teachers for helping our newest students settle seamlessly into Macquarie Fields. We are excited to see them grow through the year!

Principal’s Report ContinuedCommunity Participation

Macquarie Fields welcomes all families and friends to be active members of our school community, working in partnership for our students. There are many ways in which parents and carers can become involved at school and your contributions are highly valued and appreciated. You will receive information throughout the year regarding the different ways in which families can be involved with the school such as visiting us on special days, volunteering, classroom helper roles, donations and much more.

We have a wonderful Parent Café that meets every Wednesday morning, in the staffroom, following the whole school assembly. Parent Café topics vary from week to week and include valuable school information, such as information on OC classes and NAPLAN, how to help your child at home and resource working bees. Everyone is more than welcome to come along and the café is child friendly if you have younger children. We would love to see you there!

How do we communicate?

Communication between parents and teacher - Parent-teacher communication is essential in building positive school partnerships which support and enhance children’s learning experiences at school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. In most cases the classroom teachers are able to provide the most accurate information and/or advice. They will happily make a time to discuss items if they are unavailable to meet at the time of your initial discussion. If you are unable to come to the school, please call the front office and the administrative staff will make an appointment for you.

In the case of questions or concerns around whole school information, policies, processes and/or sensitive issues, the Assistant Principal in charge of your child’s stage; Mrs Meredith, Mrs Macpherson or I are more than happy to meet with parents and carers. School and class based items are more likely to be addressed with a positive outcome with clear communication between our families and staff. Thank you in advance for your support in working together.

Newsletter - Our fortnightly newsletter will be sent home every second Wednesday and will also be published on our school website. Please read the newsletter carefully to keep informed with what’s happening here at school.

Facebook - We encourage you to keep up to date with our community messages and good news stories on our Facebook page – Macquarie Fields Public School.

We will be working to really streamline our messages and stories over the first half of the year, as well as the way we communicate them, to ensure we are responsive to our community’s needs and also get the balance right of being informative and timely. We will keep you updated on any improvements we make. Your feedback in this area is also most appreciated. Mrs Egan and I would be happy to speak with you about any suggestions or ideas.

Our professional teachersTeachers, as part of their work, have the opportunity to be involved in professional learning. This training supports the work teachers do both in their classroom and as part of whole school initiatives. It is important that teachers are provided time to refine and expand their knowledge and expertise to support their teaching and student learning. Professional learning happens before and after school, online and also, on occasions, out of the classroom during a school day. On these occasions, the planned classroom program will be continued by casual teachers. We thank you for your understanding and support. If you do have any queries or clarifications about the absence of your child’s teacher, please see Mrs Meredith, Mrs Macpherson or myself.

Have a wonderful fortnight!

Ms Vicki CrazeR/Principal

Getting To and From SchoolArrival Students can arrive at school between 8:30 am and 8:50 am and must stay in Areas C and D. Students can not arrive at school before 8.30 am as there are no teachers on duty until 8.30am. During wet weather students go straight to their classroom at 8.30 am to be supervised by their teacher. Students arriving at school late need to be signed in at the office by a parent/caregiver.Cars Parents and caregivers are asked to park in the car park across from the school or park on the street and walk their child/ren to and from school grounds. Parents are not permitted to park on the school site. Please take care in all car park areas to ensure the safety of our students. All care should be taken to obey traffic rules and signs. Please be considerate of local residents as they are our neighbours and need to be able to access their driveways. Do not park in the No Parking zones. Never double park your car. Cars parked on the footpath, in No Standing / No Parking Zones or double-parked can incur fines from the police or rangers who often patrol our school. The crossing supervisor is there to assist children and families to cross the road safely. Cars must stop when she indicates for them to do so.BusesStudents catching a bus from school need to wait on the silver seats with the teacher on bus duty until the bus approaches unless they have their parent with them. Students are expected to behave responsibly when travelling on the bus to and from school. Repeated misbehaviour may result in the school bus pass being revoked. After School Care students also need to wait at the silver seats in the afternoon to be collected by their transport and carer, unless attending the onsite after school care in the hall.Dismissal At 2:55pm all students are dismissed from their classroom and make their way to the front of the school. Parents must remain on the silver seats at the front of the school until 2.50 pm when they are then allowed to go up to the classrooms to collect their child/ren, or they can meet their child/ren at the silver seats. Learning outside the classroomReturn of permission note and money for excursions

There are a number of excursions and extra activities planned for this term. These are valuable experiences for students as they enhance and support classroom programs. As part of school procedures, each excursion or special activity note has a due date for return to school. This procedure is to ensure the smooth organisation of the event including student attendance, transport, finance and health and safety risk assessment. These due dates must be enforced. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept late notes / payments. Any concerns regarding the due date of activities should be discussed with your child’s class teacher, the Assistant or Deputy Principals or myself, prior to the last day for permission / payment. With prior notice, special arrangements can be made. Please note, student assistance is also available for excursions and special activities. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

Tell Them From Me student survey: Information and consent form for parents and carers

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 18 March and 8 May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Wednesday 18th March 2020. Vicki Craze
