HistoryHistory: The Malagasy are a mix of Malay-Indonesian and African-Arab ancestors. Indonesians are believed to have moved to the island about 700. King Andrianampoinimerina (17871810) ruled the major kingdom on the island, and his son, Radama I (18101828), unified much of the island. The French made the island a province in 1885, and then, in 18941895, ended the monarchy, kicking the Queen Rnavlona III out to Algiers. A colonial government was set up, the Comoro Islands were attached in 1908, and other territories later. In World War II, the British invaded Madagascar, which kept ties to Vichy France.
