Latch-Key Application and Contract for 2017-2018
Madison School District is proud to offer Latch-Key before and after school care for up to
96 students who attend Madison Schools. Students are able to work on classwork, par-
ticipate in activities with their peers, and enjoy snacks during the time they are present.
Frequent cost comparisons occur to ensure that the price is competitive with other or-
ganizations who provide similar services throughout the area.
However, a significant amount of time is spent on accounting due to “tracking” students
who attend morning and/or afternoon latchkey each day. Almost all daycare centers and
preschool facilities simply charge a flat rate for a determined length of time; weekly for
example, regardless of how often a child attends. Organizations choose to charge a flat
rate rather than a daily rate because charging a daily rate creates a lot of unnecessary
accounting and provides a complex and confusing payment process for families served.
Therefore, rather than continuing to charge a daily rate, all fees will transition to a flat fee
for the 2017-18 school year. In addition, payments will only be accepted online through
MySchoolBucks. Raquel Ybarra or Jill Myers are available to assist parents with the
online payment system.
Fees and payment for 2017-18:
There is a non-refundable $10.00 application fee. An application must be completed for
each child.
Morning or Afternoon Session:
$22.50 per week for the first child and $18.50 per week for each additional child
Morning and Afternoon Session:
$40.00 per week for the first child and $33.00 for each additional child
Late Fee Charges after 5:30pm
$10.00 will be added to the account for every 15 minutes past close
Please contact Raquel Ybarra for information pertaining to Latch-Key. Raquel may be
reached at [email protected] or 517-263-0741 x352.

Junior Achievement Needs You!
Have you ever wanted the chance to volunteer and make an impact? Junior Achievement is looking for people who
would like to make a difference in the life of a child – it could even be your child! Junior Achievement’s (JA) purpose
is to educate and inspire young people about economics, financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.
Volunteers are placed with students into the classroom during the school day. All the materials you need are provid-
ed to you in a program kit. You just bring your own personal experiences to enrich the program material. J.A. pro-
gram sessions are taught in five one-hour increments and you can set a schedule with the teacher to fit your calen-
dar! Our JA office does provide grade specific training and each program kit contains a step-by-step booklet that
walks you through the fun J.A. experience in the classroom. So if you are looking to make a difference, come and
join us in our mission to help today’s youth succeed in the future.
To see how you can get involved call JA Program Coordinator, Salida, at 517-782-7822, ext. 10, or email
You may also contact Tricia Fowler, Parent Educator at 517-263-0744 ext. 231 or email
We need 10 more parent volunteers to cover classes that would like to participate!

Do you have a child who is ready for Kindergarten? If so, you are invited to Kindergarten Round-Up! While at round-up, you can register your child for the 2017-18 school year and get information of what it means to be a kindergartner at Madison.
When: April 19th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Madison’s PLTW Biomedical Science Program is now CTE certified by the
state of Michigan!
The Biomed, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions currently offered at Madison will enable students to further
deepen the healthcare science technical skills and knowledge applicable to the healthcare industry. The concepts of
diagnostics, treatment, and preventative care are evaluated as well as ethical and legal responsibilities of today’s sci-
ence/healthcare fields. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated through medical terminology, microbiolo-
gy, and advanced laboratory techniques. Students are required to meet both national and professional guidelines as
designated by applicable regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and
Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Mastery of these standards through project based learning, technical skills prac-
tice, and leadership development activities of the career and technical student organization-Health Occupations Stu-
dents of America (HOSA) will provide students with a competitive edge for either entry into the healthcare global mar-
ketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice.
All courses are considered broad-based with emphasis on anatomy/physiology, and biotechnology specific skills. Fur-
ther, students will be given various opportunities for work-based learning opportunities/job shadowing/field experienc-
es/clock hours. Students who qualify may have the opportunity to enroll in the LISD College Now Program.
Stay tuned for more details announced at the start of the 2017-2018 school year!

Boys basketball wins first regional game since 1979
Competitive Cheer finishes third in the state
After the team won districts and placed fourth at the regional tourna-ment, the Trojans advanced to the state tournament at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids. The girls finished in third place in the Division 4 finals, behind Hudson and state champion Breckenridge. Their final score was 753.54.
Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of Michigan announced that
Competitive Cheer Coach Emily Gafford has been selected as Region-
al Coach of the Year for 2017!
It was a historic season for the boys basketball team in 2016-17. After starting the year 7-7, the Trojans finished the season on a 9-2 run that propelled them all the way to the Regional Finals for just the second time in school history. The season came to an end in Regionals against SMCC, as the unbeaten Falcons defeated Madison on a buzzer-beater three-pointer to advance.
Madison won its first game of the district tournament against previously unbeaten Sand Creek by a final of 64-61. In the district semis, the Trojans beat Hudson 54-38 before winning the district title 45-40 over Addison. In the first game of regionals, Madison ousted Ann Arbor Greenhills 59-52 to win their first regional game since 1979.
During Madison’s great streak to end the season, head coach Jeff Webster notched his 200th career win. Webster is one of only a few people that can say they have won a TCC title as a player and coach for the same team.
Jared Sloop finished the season as the TCC’s leading scorer, finishing with an average of 17.1 points per game, as he scored 240 points in the 14-game conference schedule. Darien Zeluff came in third in scoring, with 215 points on the season.
Sloop and Zeluff were both named to the All-TCC first team. Aaron Dubbs received the sportsmanship award for Madison.
Sloop also received Class C All-State Honora-ble Mention Honors from the Associated Press for his efforts this season.
Great season, boys!
Trojan Bowlers compete at state tournament
Isaac Solis finished third at Regionals and qualified for the State meet. Alexis Cable
won the Regional and Isabel Young finished third to advance to the State meet.
Solis finished 35th, Cable placed 44th, and Young wound up at 59th overall in the
state!

Girls basketball reaches District Finals
After a sixth straight TCC title and a 17-3 regular season, the Lady Trojans rolled through Sand Creek and Addison
to advance to the District Finals on March 3 against Grass Lake. Madison would come up short in the finals by a
score of 46-37.
Earning All-TCC honors for the Trojans were Nicole Olden who was named to the first team, and Courtney
Benschoter who received second team honors. Keeley Pape was given the sportsmanship award for Madison.
Great season, ladies!
Najera finishes fourth in the state in wrestling
Senior 103 lb. wrestler Frankie Najera qualified for the individual state tournament at the
Palace of Auburn Hills during the weekend of March 2-4. After an 8-1 win in the opening
round of the state tournament, he moved on to the semis where he dropped a tough 3-2
decision. Najera earned All-State honors and finished fourth in the Division 3 103 lb.
weight class.
Najera was named to the Second Team All-County and Isiah Wyatt-Young was an All-
County Honorable Mention for the Trojans wrestling team this season.

Notice of Non-discrimination Policy It is the policy of Madison School District that no person shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits or, be subjected to discrimination during any program or activity or in employment. Any questions concerning the Title XI of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination of the basis of sex, along with inquiries related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap, should be directed to the Superintendent of Schools at Madison School District, 3498 Treat Highway Adrian, MI 49221. Phone 517-265-1840.
Public Act 198 of 1971, the Mandatory Special Education Act, establishes the right to handicapped person(s) from birth through the age of 25, to equal opportunity within the public schools. THIS MEANS THAT HANDICAPPED CHILDREN DO NOT NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE SCHOOL AGE TO BENEFIT FROM SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES. It is important that help be obtained for the handicapped at the earliest possible age. In the State of Michigan, this help is free and is available through your public schools. A team of educational specialists evaluate the child to determine the type and degree of disability and the best kind of program placement. This evaluation often includes medical specialists. Pre-primary Special Education ser-vices are available for: Emotionally Impaired, Mentally Impaired, Physically & Otherwise Health Impaired (POHI), Hearing Im-paired, Visually Impaired, Speech & Language Impaired, Specific Learning Disabled. If you know a pre-school child who may benefit from these services contact the Board of Education at 517-265-1840.
