DESCRIPTION

Settled in 1809, Madison achieved 19th century prominence with the arrival of the steamboat and brisk river trade. Times were lively, the community prospered, beautiful buildings and homes were constructed and society blossomed. The arrival of the railroad and the decline of the steamboat stemmed the boom and Madison slipped into a century of slumber. What appeared to be Madison’s misfortune was to become Madison’s legacy. Recognized as “The prettiest Small Town in the Midwest” by Ladies Home Journal and “Best Preserved Town in the Midwest” by The Chicago Tribune, Madison boasts the largest historic district in Indiana with over 133 blocks on the National Register of Historic Places, 3 National Historic Landmarks & National Historic Landmark District designation. Charles Kuralt called Madison, “The most beautiful rivertown in America.” And we think that you will too… Contact [email protected] for more information.

The Green Thumb Garden Tour

Explore the variety of gardens in southeastern Indiana as you travel across four counties in our area. These gardens range from a 15 acre garden, to private backyard gardens to commercial gardens.

Day One9:00 A.M. As you make your way to Southern Indiana along I-65, a short detour to “heaven,” otherwise

known as Cathedral Gardens, in Henryville, Indiana, is in order. The gardens consist of 13 intertwined gardens with statuary, fountains and an abundance of foliage and flowers. These gardens were created 13 years ago by David Daugherty, a retired engineer, who longed to expend his energies to create something beautiful. What started as a personal sanctuary has now become a garden mecca for all. All areas are handicap accessible and tours of the gardens are conducted with a guide on wagons or golf carts depending on individual needs. Please allow 2 hours for tour. Picnics in the gardens are welcome, but you must provide your own food. $15/person for first time visits ½ price for return visitors. Deposit Required.

12:00 P.M. Our next stop as you travel north on I-65 is located in the quiet berg of Commiskey, Indiana. The Stream Cliff Farm Tearoom and Winery is nestled on an Historic Civil War Site along the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail. Known for their quilt patterned gardens, the Twigs and Sprigs Tearoom and their recently opened winery, this farm is a sanctuary tucked amid the lush countryside. Hope you’re hungry! Lunch is served in the tearoom. A must have, is their Lemon Verbena Lemonade, Birdseed Pasta Salad, Dill and Rosemary Chicken Salad and for dessert try the Hummingbird Cake. All dishes include herbs from their gardens and each plate is garnished with an edible flower or herb. Your group can also sign up for classes and lectures, garden tours and wine tastings. Lunch $13.95/person plus tax and gratuity. Classes and lectures are extra.

2:00 P.M. Now for the piece d’ resistance, choose your route, you can either meander thru the countryside or take the state highway to Historic Madison Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River, just a stone’s throw from Kentucky. Madison’s claim to fame is its extensive variety of 19th century architecture. Much of which has been preserved and painstakingly restored- including 133 blocks of the downtown area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Madison is a delightful community that has been able to maintain the charm and allure of “days gone by.” With 10 historic sites open to the public, numerous festivals and events and wonderful shopping, there is plenty to see and do.

2:30 P.M. Take a break at the Visitors Center. Stretch your legs, watch our 10 minute video and browse our gift shop. Restrooms are available as well.

For two weekends in May, the Jefferson Co. Historical Society hosts “Madison in Bloom”, a tour of private gardens in the downtown area. This is a self-guided tour of local gardens not normally open to the public. So, if your visit coincides with one of these two weekends, this is another great addition to your garden extravaganza! Group rates are available approx. $7.00/person for groups of 20 or more.
