ever closer to our ideal of “pure music” - most recently with our Vento Series,

and involves considerable measuring, simulation and optimisation processes,

Live in style. At Canton we believe that loudspeakers should be adapted to you

and your home. Therefore, we produce series with varying designs to match

the most diverse range of interiors and furnishings. In this Canton magazine,

we will introduce you to them.

The slimline box design and aluminium surfaces of the CD Series (shown

above), are especially well suited to bright, linear surroundings. As with all

Canton loudspeakers, technology and sound are never sacrificed for external

appearances. The success of the CD Series provided the impetus to embrace

new developments and launch new CD models, creating a perfect range of

music and home cinema solutions.

New additions to the CD Series include the medium sized “200” Series models as

well as the CD 3200 active and CD 3500 wireless floorstanding loudspeakers with

integrated amplifiers. The latter is connected via a digital radio signal. Imagine,

for the first time, high quality multi-room music and home theater – completely

wireless!

As you will discover in this magazine, a lot of Canton technology has made

history; the proverbial durability and resilience of our loudspeakers as well as

the beautiful forms and finishes of our cabinets. We believe that real beauty

The Vento tweeter system with its aluminium-manganese dome can reproduce frequencies up

to 40,000 Hz. The specially designed “transmission” front plate helps to broaden the angle of

dispersion for better coverage across the listening environment.

Thanks to its aluminium cone and unique, multi-curved “wave” surround, the Vento

midrange speaker produces very low distortion even at very high output levels.

The cone, motor system and surround of the Reference 1 DC woofers are totally new. These new drivers offer higher output levels at even lower levels of distortion.

The amazing piano-lacquered fi nish of the new fl agship Vento Reference 1 DC and Vento

Reference 5 DC conceals a complex cabinet designed for pure performance. The magnetic

motor systems of the drivers have been further refined with computer optimized copper

inserts to produce the highest linearity, even at extreme cone excursions. Complex crossover

networks utilize the fi nest components: minimal resistance inductors, high power handling

capacitors and the highest quality metal film resistors. Internal wiring is “Black Science”

loudspeaker cable from Fast Audio.

All of the Vento Series loudspeakers are characterised by their acoustic-enhancing rounded form.

The cabinet’s unique shape is created using an intricate multilayer lamination process. The tweeter

systems work up to 40,000 Hz and are particularly smooth. Computer refi ned front plates aid

in creating a wide sound fi eld. The aluminium cones of the midrange and woofers use a special

multi-curved wave surround. They reduce distortion and unwanted membrane resonance while

increasing bandwidth, excursion and output level capabilities.

Vento meets the highest audio demands of home theater, particularly when the fl oorstanding Vento 809 DC

loudspeakers are allowed to unleash their orchestral power from the front of the room. The Vento 805 CM

center channel loudspeaker can be placed directly on or under the TV thanks to its magnetic shielding. The

acoustically matched Vento 802 compact speakers for the rear channels can be placed on the LS 800 or LS 850

stands. The 350-watt Vento AS 850 SC is an ideal match to handle the lowest frequencies. Its unique room

compensation control allows it to adapt perfectly to any listening environment.

A top quality Karat home cinema system doesn’t necessarily require the largest models. For example, if the

magnificent Karat AS 750 SC is used to form the basis of the woofer setup, Karat 709 DC floorstanding

loudspeakers positioned front left and right will do the job perfectly. This produces amazing overall sound

when combined with the compact Karat 702 (on speaker stands LS 600 or LS 650) for the rear channels. The

Karat 705 CM center channel loudspeaker is ideal for fi lm dialogue, which should always come from the screen.

Thanks to its magnetic shielding, it can be placed very close to the TV.

The classic models in the Ergo series are still evolving, without compromising their original

qualities. In the latest collection, all models have wave-geometry woofer surrounds, gold plated

connection terminals and tweeters that perform up to 40,000 Hz. The cabinets and shape of

the baffl es were perfected by state-of-the-art computer processes, which have further reduced

acoustic rebound refl ections at the edges of the cabinets. Externally, all models in the series have

high-grade real wood veneer or silver lacquer surfaces.

The rear loudspeakers do not necessarily have to sit on the fl oor in the Ergo series home cinema systems. If there’s

no room for the Ergo 602 compact speakers on the LS 600 speaker stands, the Ergo 601 fl at loudspeaker with its

For classic surround sound with fi ve channels and a subwoofer channel (hence the 5.1 reference),

An impressive surround system with Plus series loudspeakers relies on the Canton AS series active subwoofer

for deep bass. Depending on the size of the room, the AS 60, AS-80 or AS-100 will be the perfect choice. The

magnetically shielded Plus AV 700.2 takes on the role of center channel speaker. The front, back, left and right

channels can each be served by Plus X.2’s. These can either be wall mounted using Cantomount brackets or

Canton Technology DC technologyDC technology (’Displacement Con-trol’), developed by Canton prevents the uncontrolled deflection of the bass loudspeaker membrane at low tones. It suppresses the subsonic (i.e. not au-dible) oscillations and allows the bass tones to sound perceptibly sharper and more precise.

SC technologyCanton’s in-house SC technology de-fines redefines the relationship between speaker volume and bass reproduction using individual filter switches and ex-tends the speakers’ transmission range by an octave and more downwards – and this with unbelievable level con-sistency.

Transmission Front PlateBy using computers to optimise the shape of the tweeter’s front plate, Canton is significantly improving twee-ter performance. The transmission front plate optimises the tweeter’s effective-ness in the midrange/tweeter crossover region, producing lower distortion and giving the speaker a more linear fre-quency response.

Wave surroundThe suspension system attached to the cone of a woofer or midrange is called the surround. The shape and materi-al of the surround affect the systems overall performance. Canton’s precise computer modelling allows for optimi-zation of all properties of the surround, greatly improving performance. Our unique multi-curved wave shape re-duces resonance and increases excur-sion capabilities for better frequency response and higher output levels with lower levels of distortion. The surround is made of Butyl rubber for flexibility and longevity.

Loudspeaker components

Bi-wiring/biampingThe top of the range Canton speakers are equipped with a bi-wiring/biamp-ing connector panel. This connection method allows the upper midtone range and high frequency range to be controlled separately through two am-plifiers (biamping) or through separate cables through one amplifier (bi-wir-ing) as preferred.

Treble chassisThe treble chassis is primarily respon-sible for the tone and sharpness of reproduction. In canton speakers the Treble chassis is always a cup system, i.e. a system with a dome-shaped loudspeaker membrane driven by a speech coil.

Midtone chassisThe midtone chassis reproduces the musically most important ranges of the voice. In its high-grade Karat and Ergo Series speakers Canton uses rapid im-pulse and warp-resistant aluminium me mbranes to achieve optimum output.

Bass chassisIt is the bass chassis of a loudspeaker that actually has to perform the hard-est work. Powerful magnets, stable, die-cast cradles, high-capacity poly-propylene speech coils and membranes are crucial to sound quality and bass precision.

Coax chassisIn addition to the usual two and three-way loudspeakers, Canton also uses coaxial technology loudspeaker sys-tems, for example with small satellite speakers. The tweeter rests on a bridge centred in front of the woofer (mid-tone loudspeaker). These systems very closely approach the ideal of a crater shaped sound source. CrossoverThe crossover is a component in the loudspeaker that splits the audio fre-quency into sub-areas. The individual areas are then relayed by the specialist, individual loudspeakers (high frequen-cy, midtone, treble).

ICEpower™ digital amplificationSubwoofer power amplifiers should be capable of delivering high output levels. With conventional amplifiers, maxi-mum output is restricted by mechani-cal size and heat emissions. The largest Canton subwoofers use ICEpower™ digital amplifiers, which can deliver high performance and high output levels thanks to their state-of-the-art, reliable, digital circuitry. These special digital amplifiers are extremely efficient compared to conventional designs and generate almost no heat.

Home cinema units

Front loudspeakersBoth the front loudspeakers project the left and right sound channel and form the basis of cinema sound. All Canton Hi-fi speakers can be used as front Loudspeakers as they reproduce the full frequency spectrum in rich detail and dynamically.

Centre speakerAs an addition to the front loudspeakers the centre speaker forms an indepen-dent central channel that is specifically responsible for speech reproduction. As the centre speaker is near to the televi-sion set, all Canton models have mag-netic shielding to avoid colour defects or distortion.

Surround speakersThe surround boxes are responsible for the sound depth. They are located to the rear of the auditory area. To pro-duce top-quality effects they should be tuned to the other equipment compo-nents.

Active subwooferFor deep tones home cinema units are supported by an active subwoofer. Canton’s active subwoofers can be tuned to the stereo loudspeakers and to the size of the room to suit personal listening taste.

Glossary

ImpedanceThe impedance is the electrical resis-tance that a loudspeaker represents for the amplifier. In accordance with the standard this ’nominal impedance’ may not be more than 20 percent below the transmission range at any point.

Nominal/musical power loadingThe nominal power loading is the maxi-mum output with which a loudspeaker can be loaded without being damaged. The musical power loading, however, is the value to which a loudspeaker is subjected for a short time.

Nominal/Musical outputThe nominal output is the output that a power amplifier can deliver over a long period without being damaged. The musi-cal output is the peak value that a power amplifier can deliver for a short period.

Sound pressure level (SPL)The sound pressure level is the relation-ship between electrical power input and radiated acoustic output of a loudspeaker. A measurement is taken, for example, of the operational output required to produce a set acoustic pres-sure at a distance of 1 metre from the speaker. To look at it the other way the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) gives the acoustic pressure that the speaker pro-duces at a distance of 1 metre with an electrical power input of 1W.

Transmission rangeThe transmission range is the frequen-cy range within which within which the loudspeaker – within the limits of set tolerances – reproduces identical sounds identically in corresponding cir-cumstances.

Frequency responseThe frequency response identifies the frequencies at which reproduction passes from one chassis to the next with multi-path speaker units.

General technology

DVD-VideoDVD-Video is a DVD that is played through video signals (Digital Versatile Disc). As a further development of the CD-ROM the DVD has a much higher storage capacity and processing speed.

DVD-Audio DVD-Audio is a new music format that uses the high storage capacity of the DVD to play music recordings at the highest quality on six channels. The ad-vantage of the DVD-Audio is primarily in its improved sound quality. There are also functions such as playing music videos and song texts or interpreter’s notes that a CD cannot offer. The CD-A can record up to 400 minutes of sound in CD quality (44.1 kHz/16 bit) and up to 74 minutes of top quality 6-channel surround sound at 96 kHz/24 bit. In 2-channel mode the DVD-A increases the limit of scanning rate to 192 kHz. This gives a tremendous dynamic range of 144 dB as opposed to the CD’s 98 dB.

Super Audio CD (SACD)Like the DVD-Audio the SACD (Super Audio CD) offers the highest level of music reproduction. The SACD was actually developed for music and, unlike the DVD, not for video as well. As opposed to a standard CD it provides a natural, high-quality sound. It differs to the CD in the way in which the digital information is captured on the disc. Thanks to a sampling rate of 2.8 MHz (CD: 44.1 kHz) the sound data is scanned more faithfully and precisely. The SACD’s frequency curve does not end until 100 kHz (CD: 20 kHz) and its maximum dynamic is 120 dB (CD: 96 dB). As opposed to the DVD-Audio SACDs can also be played on standard CD players - but only at CD quality, of course. This is possible through the SACD’s double layered construction: each disc has one layer with the SACD information and a layer that is played with the slightly worse CD information. Every SACD player can, of course, also play standard CDs.

Dolby Digital In this further development of Dolby Surround Prologic the sound channels are digitally recorded. Compared to Dolby Surround Prologic two separate FX channels and a subwoofer channel improve the spatial experience.

Dolby ProLogic II To be able to play videos at higher sound quality, Dolby Prologic II was developed by the Dolby Labs. It repre-sents the successor to Dolby Surround Prologic. The analogue multi-channel standard has improved Matrix-Surround Technology that provides more realistic surround sound and a better directional effect with Dolby Surround and stereo recordings.

DTS Digital Theatre Sound (DTS) is a further 5.1 surround format that was de-veloped by Digital Theater Systems Inc. However, the number of DVD films with DTS sound is still very limited, whereas Dolby Digital is much more widespread in Europe. This is primarily because the committee for establishing sound for-mats (DVD Forum) had already decided on Dolby Digital as the standard for-mat when Digital Theatre Systems an-nounced that it was also going to make its format available for DVD. Compared to Dolby Digital, DTS has very little data compression, which has an advantageous effect on the sound but also requires a great deal of storage space.
