i n seP T e m b er , T h e Ch oWa n University board of Trustees announced that dr. m. Christopher White will transition from the role of President of Chowan University to Chancellor at the end of the academic year. dr. White will have served Chowan as president for 15 years, a period of the institution’s most significant growth. including his prior service at another university, his presidential career will have spanned a total of 32 years.

“Chris White’s leadership rescued our school and has truly transformed the University, solidifying its place among north Carolina’s leading colleges and universities,” said board Chair W. frank rose, Jr.

dr. White’s tenure as president ushered in a new era of growth and prosperity. When he arrived in July 2003 the school was in dire financial straits. Under his leadership, Chowan emerged with financial strength, completing every fiscal year comfortably in the black. both the enrollment and the endowment more than doubled, with enrollment currently exceeding 1,500 students for the third consecutive year. for a period of eight years, a new enrollment record was set each year, earning Chowan recognition by a national survey as one of the fastest-growing universities in the nation. The size of the campus almost doubled and every existing building was completely renovated. Twelve new buildings were constructed, including the nine-building student apartment

complex named Whites Crossing by the trustees in honor of dr. and mrs. White and their families.

The academic program was upgraded to University status and the current faculty is arguably the best prepared in the institution’s history. The intercollegiate athletic

program was upgraded to nCaa ii and competes successfully in the Ciaa and Conference Carolinas. dr. White is convinced that a significant part of Chowan’s resurgence has been an emphasis on the University’s Christian values. in that vein, the recruiting slogan Faith in your Future embodies the spirit and essence of Chowan University.

“i look forward to this new phase in my career and anticipate continued growth and transformation,” dr. White said. “my focused attention on

fundraising efforts will be absolutely necessary as Chowan embarks on the next 170 years.”

“We are delighted that dr. and mrs. White will continue to be part of the Chowan family,” rose said. “he is not retiring, he will merely transition from one role to another.” as Chancellor, dr. White will advise the new president, work closely with the development office in securing major gifts, and continue to be a goodwill ambassador for the University in the region.

Work began immediately to select the next president of Chowan University. dr. White remains as President until the new leader is identified, assisting the board of Trustees as requested throughout the transition.

T h e Ci r CUm s Ta n Ce s o f W.J. “Bill” Little, Jr.’s birth did not foreshadow a future so rich in diverse experiences and service leadership. Born in 1927, to a farming family in Stanly County, North Carolina, this youngest of five children might have remained on the farm had it not been for the Second World War, which, as it did for many Americans, affected the life decisions and directions for the family.

Moving from the farm to the city, most of the family worked in the textile mills. After high school, Bill followed his brothers into military service and joined the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable service, he went to college on the

gi Bill and became a respected high school teacher and award-winning athletics coach.

After this period of teaching and coaching, he worked for the federal government in critical capacities at the Department of Air Force, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Department of energy. Bill has also served as a member/officer of the North Carolina Senior tarheel Legislature, Chowan University Board of trustees, Northampton County School Board, Duke University Council on Aging, County Forest Association, and as the chair/deacon for numerous government, agricultural and church committees.

Community Service Award:

W.J. “BiLL” LittLe, JR.

Sharing in Bill’s endeavors and successes of those early adult years, and for many years after, was his wife, Mary Jordan. they were married in Jackson, N.C. on June 8, 1949, and together raised two children, Bill, iii and Julie Kim, in whom they instilled the lasting value of giving while living and beyond. they co-founded the North Carolina Senior education Corps connecting local retired citizen volunteers with school needs. in 1997, god called Mary home. their shared love for teaching and deep commitment to education abides across the state, to include a scholarship bearing their name at this University.

As for Bill’s giving, an exhaustive listing would be too lengthy for the purpose of this writing, but it can be said of him that the mention of his name prompts a smile and words of praise for his many contributions to individuals, organizations, and institutions. Anyone who knows him well, and any who only know of him, would say without hesitation that W.J. “Bill” Little, Jr. has been a good Christian, a faithful husband, a loving father, a patient teacher, and a loyal friend.

“What led me to Chowan was god,” takiya Delbridge said. When takiya graduated high school she knew she wanted to go to Chowan, however, she also knew it was expensive. A Virginia native, she decided to go to an in-state school with lower rates. “Somewhere in the midst of getting

things straight to go to VSU, my mom asked me where i felt like god wanted me, and i said, ‘Honestly, Chowan, but it’s too high.’ She told me not to worry about the money just go, so that’s what i did,” she continued.

Four years later, takiya graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Religion, and earned an internship through

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) following graduation. takiya became involved with CBF through her relationship with Chowan Christian Service Association (CCSA) and Campus Ministries.

At one point, financial difficulties threatened her education at Chowan. god had different plans. She received a CCSA scholarship for the next two years. CCSA not only kept her in college, it allowed her to gain leadership experience as the president of Daughters of the Most High (Daughters), a praise dance team on campus which she describes as one of the greatest experiences of her life. Although it was a challenge, takiya accepted willingly.

“it was Daughters that taught me about myself," she said. "Leadership is service, and that was one of the greatest things i have ever been able to experience: creating a space where young women will get to know themselves and god. Because of the CCSA scholarship, i was able to do that for three years. thank you for believing in us. to any donor who might wonder, ‘where is my money going, is it doing anything?,’ i

promise you that it has changed my life.”

Near the end of her senior year, While takiya was working with campus ministry, Drew and Mari, Associate Minister and Minister to the University respectively, invited all of the campus ministry leaders to meet with

CBF representatives to discuss internships; takiya applied. She received an internship with Conetoe Family Life Center, a youth planned and led family center.

Following her internship, takiya began working at St. Mark Christian Academy and Discover Learning Center. At St. Mark takiya is the Media/Library teacher. She teaches students how to use the library resources and stresses the importance of reading. this position allows her to be create her own lesson plans while utilizing the Bible to teach students about god’s plan and the power of decision making. At the Discover Learning Center, she is an after-school instructor. Her lessons focus on devotion while simultaneously helping with homework and building character.

“Chowan has helped me so much, mainly in the leadership area,” takiya shared. As president of one of the ministries within campus ministries (Daughters of the Most High), there were passions awakened within takiya that she didn’t realize existed. Passions to help others

discover the potential locked inside themselves and passions to develop leaders; both of which will serve her well in her journey to work with youth. takiya said the Religion Department helped her a great deal also. She learned not to be afraid when her faith was challenged, and she became more accepting of other points of views related to religion and life in general. “i am putting to use everything i learned at Chowan,” she enthusiastically stated.

“i have the opportunity to plant seeds in the hearts of these precious students," takiya says. they may not receive it or even understand it now, but god does and i believe throughout their lives He will water those seeds and cause them to grow in their hearts.”

in June of 2018, once the current school year is complete, takiya will travel to Mexico with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for disciples training school and mission work. By traveling the world and spreading the gospel, she will water her own seed that was planted after her summer internship with CBF.

“i look forward to becoming a better person and helping the next generation grow to be great,” she said.

Z ac h a ry co o pe rMaya Angelou once said, “You

may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” that’s just what zachary Cooper, recent Chowan University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, learned when he chose to attend Chowan University under unusual circumstances.

“College for me, at first, was a way to play baseball, always

hoping to make it to the pros,” zack shared. zack attended Wake tech Community College for two years to play baseball while he completed his associate degree. From there he attended Campbell University, again for baseball. However, after some unforeseen circumstances, it did not work out. His intentions were to transfer to another Division i school, but there were issues with paperwork that again altered his plans. that’s when Chowan University showed interest, and zack enrolled.

Although, his great ambition was baseball, zack had an interest in criminal justice since high school. Originally, he wanted to be a special agent in the FBi with a focus on violent crimes or counter terrorism. “i was even a criminal justice and homeland security double major at Campbell. it was not until Chowan that i began to even think about law school,” zack stated. “i was in a criminal justice class where we had a mock trial and i was the defendant. i did not know it at the time, but the three students acting as my attorneys were all pre-law,” he continued. During the mock-trial, zack came up with his own defense and the team agreed it was the best. throughout the trial, the other students convinced him to look into law school. “i have always known the law fairly well and have been interested previously in the federal government. i have also been interested in public policy for a while,” zack said. After this experience, zack decided to study constitutional law at the University of Mississippi, and eventually would like to be a judge or run for office.

“Being a student-athlete at Chowan, i believe has greatly prepared me for the next step in my

education. it required me to develop great time management skills in order to balance the workload from class along with the practice time for baseball. While i will not be playing a sport in law school, the overall time needed to be dedicated to school will be even greater. i believe that i will need to devote the same amount of time to my studies in law school as i devoted to both baseball and studies at Chowan. the time management skills that i developed at Chowan will be crucial for law school,” zack stated.

At Chowan, zack also developed critical thinking and writing skills through several courses. Although critical thinking is crucial for any field, it is especially necessary for a career in law. zack specified, “in the criminal justice system and law, poor writing is the number one reason cases are lost or overturned. So, writing is extremely important as well.”

“if there is anything i learned over my college career, it is to grow where you are planted; to not just survive, but thrive,” zack stated. “Over the next few years, i am most looking forward to where god leads me. it seems that he has led me every step of the way until now. each school i have attended, i, at some point, said i would not, including Ole Miss. However, each place has been a launching pad to the next phase in life, and i cannot wait to see what is

in store for me,” he continued.zack is a member of Alpha

Chi, awarded Most Outstanding Criminal Justice Student 2016, won Most Outstanding Male Athlete 2017, was inducted into Who’s Who 2017, and graduated Summa Cum Laude, Latin for with the highest distinction, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. zack was also slated as a commencement speaker; however, the Chowan University baseball team was playing in the CiAA tournament. President White read his speech, concluding, “it is not easy. it takes a good friend or two or even ten. it takes adjustment. Most of all it takes a willing attitude. if these three things are present, you will be able to grow where you are planted. You will not just survive, but you will thrive and enjoy all that god has to offer where he has placed you.”

Wa r r e n p oW e r s“Legacy is a beautiful thing, and

generational wealth to me is one of the most important things in life,” said Warren Powers, recent Chowan University graduate.

true to his belief, Warren has joined the family business at Primerica Financial Services. His father spent the last 22 years building the company, and one day Warren hopes to establish his own business. “Whenever he’s ready to pass his business down to me, i’ll already have my business built on top of what my parents have built,” he shares.

Warren is aware that managing his own business is hard work, but he intends to build a business within the existing company that will allow him to provide for his children, and generations to come. However, he is concerned about much more than his own success. He plans to help others to achieve the same opportunity.

“My experience at Chowan is helping me out tremendously in

the workforce. i know that the road of being an entrepreneur will be extremely tough. However, from the lessons i learned from being an athlete at Chowan, the independent thinking skills i learned from Dr. Nicholson and the tremendous example that my parents have put before me in this business, i know that i’ll be just

fine,” stated Warren.Warren majored in english

while at Chowan. His interest began when he was young, however. in sixth grade Warren’s english teacher expressed the talent he saw in him and encouraged him to continue to work, and work he did. in 10th grade, Warren was the only underclassmen in his Creative Writing class, where he learned much from observing the styles of other student writers. “My stories started to paint a clearer vision for the reader and writing them became therapeutic to me,” Warren explains.

Upon graduation from high school, Warren was accepted to Chowan University. He was the first full-ride basketball scholarship recipient in the program's history. Dr. White, Chowan University President, explains that in an effort to be more competitive with athletics, it was time to begin offering full scholarships, and this power forward was a perfect match. Not only was he

an athlete, he excelled academically, graduating Cum Laude. While a student, Warren not only presented his senior capstone at the National Alpha Chi Convention, he blew the judges away with his explanation of how “hip hop music is the modern day version of Negro Spirituals,” a project he and Dr. Cynthia Nicholson prepared and fine tuned for a year and a half.

“i was able to stay true to myself and culture in a setting of people who were not very familiar with hip hop music, and change their overall perspective of hip hop, which ultimately helped me win the presentation prize. this would not have happened without Dr. Nicholson's help preparing me for a year and a half spent researching the topic for my capstone,” stated Warren, as he continued to name other key players in his success to include Mr. Nicholson, Dr. Herek and Mrs. Newhouse.

Warren attributes who he is today to his experience as both a scholar and athlete at Chowan. “i learned the virtues of patience, persistency, dedication, leadership, and teamwork all while playing basketball at Chowan. i also learned how to balance my time, which is something that i was not particularly good at prior to attending.”

He continues, “Hard work, persistency and willpower are the things that will assure my success and i'm willing to pay the price. Zu l ay r o m e r oit is rare to be able to do what

you love and call it your job. Most passions become hobbies, and receive less and less attention as the hustle and bustle of life consumes each day. We become bogged down in necessities and ultimately lose what brings us joy. zulay Romero is determined that will not be her fate.

the New Bern, NC, native decided to value her passions as more than a hobby while an undergraduate at Chowan University. zulay discovered a career path that will allow her to explore her passions daily and is attending eastern Virginia Medical School (eVMS) to continue pursuing her dream.

“i have always loved art, but people told me that art would never help me financially. Other than my family, i didn’t have much support for my love of art. My family always taught me that it shouldn’t be about money, but about what makes you truly happy to be alive,” zulay shared.

From the age of twelve zulay knew two things: she wanted to work with children and she wanted to make art. However, she did not know of a field that would allow her to live both of her passions daily until she arrived at Chowan University. “Chowan helped me find my calling,” zulay said. When she toured the campus, she learned about art therapy. She researched the program, loved it, and made it her major. “the idea that i could use art to guide someone towards healing truly captured my heart,” shared zulay.

zulay toured eastern Virginia Medical School during her junior year at Chowan, but was not sure medical school was the right next step. “i was afraid it would lean

more towards the clinical aspect and not the artistic, ” said zulay.

An eVMS professor contacted Dr. Jennifer Place, Chair of the Psychology Department and one of zulay’s professors, to request student referrals. Dr. Place reached out to zulay, one of just a few students in the art therapy program. “i really felt that maybe it was a sign,” shared zulay. “So, i applied and later attended the interview day which entailed another tour. i saw the fully-stocked art studio for the first time and i fell completely in love with all 2,000 square feet of it.”

zulay says she would not be where she is today without the support of all the faculty and staff at Chowan. “Without them i never would have landed in the career field that i wanted, landed in the art medium that i grew to adore, landed in one of the most vigorous programs, and the list continues. i have no doubt that god strategically placed these amazing individuals in my life for a purpose,” she said.

Romero admits the program at eVMS is difficult, but for all the right reasons. “it is an intensive program; however, i am learning about who i am and who my inner art therapist is. As an artist, i am learning of all forms of mediums, some of which i had never even considered exploring.

i have seen how they can help potential clients. it is a jaw dropping experience.” She will engage in three semesters of internships working with children, teenagers, and adults to prepare her adequately for her practice after graduation. She also has the option to become a Registered Art therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. “this is only a tiny portion of what the eVMS program will help accomplish. i chose this vigorous program because i truly believe it will prepare me to be the person i am called to be and so much more,” stated zulay.

After graduate school, zulay will seek a job working with orphaned children or with military families. ideally, she would like to work for a few years gaining experience and understanding to eventually build her own non-profit travelling practice. “i want to travel to different countries and work with underprivileged and/or orphaned children and use art as means to help guide them towards healing,” shared zulay.

Dr. Corina Wack never intended to become a teacher. She recalls being terrified when she was awarded a teaching assistantship in graduate school. Yet, her PhD advisor quickly pointed out she had a natural gift and encouraged her to pursue it. "i might have eventually come around," Corina says, "but she really helped me see it."

A first generation college student (both of her parents dropped out of high school), Corina finds plenty of common ground with Chowan University students. She holds them to incredibly high standards, which leads them to exceed their own expectations in an effort to meet hers. She serves as advisor for the Science Club and was instrumental in

resurrecting Rotaract, previously one of the top student organizations under Dean Clayton Lewis, though it had dissolved with the passage of time. the students she recruits flourish under her mentorship and she is a sought-after advisor on research and capstone projects.

"i love research," Corina says. "that's why i became a biologist. i know how important it was for my future in Biology to be part of a student research project. i want to pay that forward." She says she wouldn't be where she is today without the influence of her mentor and research projects. "i was an average student," she says, "but he saw something in me that i didn't. He turned me on to this idea

of research and i loved it. Suddenly my grades started to go up." She became close to his wife and baby-sat his children. "they became my family," she says. "He is my model, and i've realized everything i do is to make him proud."

if imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, then Corina does her mentor a great service, applying the same philosophy to her interactions with students. Corina is unflagging in her support of students and their interests across campus. She regularly hosts international students

in her home for meals over breaks, including thanksgiving dinner. She drives the soccer team to away games. She shows up to cheer at athletic events and honor society inductions. She organizes and contributes to fund-raisers. She volunteers to sit in dunk tanks.

"When i feel passionate about something, i just jump in with both feet. i want to carry those things on and help fill in any gaps."

Her advice to students is to pursue what they are most passionate about, get involved, and make that their course of study. "they've got to find their passion and then really work for it. that way they'll love their life and they'll love their work," she says.

Corina is highly involved off-campus as well. A Past-President and current Club Administration Chair of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, she is the living embodiment of the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." She also serves Rotary as Assistant District governor and District Rotaract Chair. She is such an advocate of community service, she organized an annual community service fair to give students the opportunity to connect with local volunteer organizations and find their own place to contribute.

She is involved at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, has volunteered at the Pork Festival, Watermelon Festival, and the Murfreesboro Historical Association's Candlelight Christmas tour. She also took on the Chowan Salon lecture series when two former colleagues departed the University, and served as the first female president of the Faculty Senate.

Halfway through her seventh year at Chowan, she reflects that she's not exactly where she expected to end up. "When i came to interview, i didn't expect to take the job," she says. "But when i got here, everyone was just so nice. the warmth and the openness that i felt immediately solidified my decision that i was going to take the job if it was offered."

"Chowan is my flow," she continues. "teaching and engaging with the students invigorates me. in the summer, i initially look forward to the break, but by mid-June, i'm ready to be back." to make up for that, she spent last summer supervising student research (pictured below).

A common theme throughout her life and career is that events frequently take a turn she didn't expect. "But god is smarter than all of us," she adds. "i'm thankful for that."

r a fa eL g o n C a Lv e s ha s a sm i L e that could power New York City's electrical grid and an outlook so sunny you could easily make the mistake of not taking him seriously. But put him on the tennis court, or in the classroom, and a laserlike intensity and focus takes over. it becomes very clear, very fast that nothing is going to stand in the way of his dreams.

A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Rafael was raised by his mother and grandfather in a very dangerous and poor part of the city. What his family didn't have in money, they more than made up for in inspiration. "My family always told me to follow my dreams, no matter what," he says. His grandfather taught physics for many years and his mother studied chemical engineering. they surrounded Rafael and his siblings with books and did everything they could to foster his curiosity and his inborn love of math and science.

Rafael learned early to work hard for what he wanted, and to pursue the things he most deeply desired. the greatest challenge he's faced is mere survival. "it sounds crazy when i say it, but it's true. every day i left home not knowing if i would return." throughout high school, he rose before daylight to catch the train to school, followed by an hour ride in the other direction to reach tennis practice, then a long commute home. He arrived late every night, well after dark. those last few minutes were the most dangerous part of each day, as he

traversed a neighborhood so dangerous, he saw others harmed and mugged on a regular basis. He was robbed himself several times.

His love of tennis, and the hope that tennis would provide him a way out, made it all worth it. When he discovered the possibility of coming to America to study and play tennis in college, he was single-minded in pursuit of that goal, teaching himself english from his mother's old books on the bus and train so that he would be able to pass college entrance exams and placing third in the nation at the time of the test. When Chowan University offered him a scholarship, he jumped at the chance, and continued his history of setting up goals and knocking them down. From his performance on the court to his performance in the classroom, he masters everything he seeks to accomplish, and maintains a humility that is refreshing and sincere.

"i'm happy about my accomplishments," he says, "but not proud. What i'm proud of is my family, and the relationships and connections i've made. i feel very blessed."

After graduation in May, Rafael has set his sights on continuing his education, with plans to attend graduate school for aerospace engineering. We have no doubt he will again conquer his goals and make all his dreams come true.

time for a Changesi n Ce T h e o Pen i n g o f newly renovated and named Meiggs Auditorium in August, Chowan University administration has been flooded with requests from faculty, student organizations, and community groups wanting to use the space. Athletic teams even want to use it for study hall. Formerly known as the green lagoon (because it was painted all in green and frequently wet, as President White likes to quip), the classroom is now a thoroughly modern oasis, equipped with the latest technology, ergonomic chairs, and electrical outlets and charging ports built into the desks.

Raymond D. Meiggs, trustee and friend of Chowan University, and his wife Bettye, made the gift that would transform the auditorium from his deathbed. Succumbing to a long and arduous battle with cancer, it was important to both of them that the gift be made while he was still living.

"We are so pleased to be part of the Meiggs Family and be able to honor them," President White said. "Raymond Meiggs was well-loved by the board, and a very engaged and involved member from day one."

the Meiggs family represents three generations of Chowan alumni: Raymond and Bettye '52, son Ken '74, daughter Sherree Meiggs Freid '77, and granddaughter Ashley Meiggs Revelle '04. "in our household, everyone went to Chowan but the pets," Sherree smiled. they all carry a deep love and support for their alma mater.

L i n dsaY CL e m en T Ya n Ce Y, sr . , affectionately known as Chowan’s “southern gentleman,” was a man with a strong work ethic and a lot of energy, traits that he inherited from his parents, particularly his father. He was committed to his hometown, his church, family, education, and the moral background that was instilled in him by his parents.

A member of the "greatest generation" Clement's association with Chowan began in 1981 when he was elected to the first of four terms as a trustee. He served three years as Chair of the executive Committee and one year as Chair of the Board (1999). in 1995 he served as Chair of the Presidential Search Committee. His stewardship and business acumen both greatly benefitted Chowan. As a result of his years of dedicated service, the University awarded Yancey with the Baptist Heritage Award in 2002 and honored him with trustee emeritus status in 2004.

His son, Lindsay C. Yancey, Jr., recalls that his father worked hard to make the world a better place. "He didn't seek leadership, but he accepted service in leadership," Lindsay says. "if he took on any job, he made sure it was done properly. He always left things better than he found them."

Clement was a generous financial supporter of Chowan University in death as well as in life. His estate gift at the time of his passing made possible a much-needed update to the conference room in historic McDowell Columns Hall (formerly Ward Parlor). the gift completed the transformation from parlor to conference room, and the space was officially named Yancey Conference room in Clement's honor.

Another surprise gift came to Chowan posthumously. Clement was a great collector of antique clocks. According to Lindsay, he gathered more than one hundred different specimens over the course of thirty years. Lindsay selected one clock from his father's collection to gift to the University. the banjo style clock (pictured at left) was awarded to Clement and is inscribed with his name. it now hangs in Yancey Conference Room.

Clement's philanthropy was made possible by his success as a businessman. He worked for over 67 years in partnership with his beloved brother “Moo” Yancey in the automobile business and in family property management until his death. "i admired his

business savvy and vision," said Lindsay. "He had a way of motivating people through kindness and a soft word. He could bring people on board with gentle, positive persuasion."

in addition, Clement was a great family man. Lindsay calls him a "magnificent example" of a husband, father, and grandfather. "His overall set of values was his greatest legacy," Lindsay recalls. "He always preached stay out of debt (as much as

possible), don't procrastinate, and that honesty is always imperative. He always said your word is your bond."

Lindsay describes his father's rise as a baptism by fire. He lived through the depression and war, and undertook the challenge of restarting his life after the disruption. Born on June 3, 1923, to William thornton and Laura Clement Yancey in Oxford, North Carolina, Clement graduated from Oxford High School in 1939 and Mars Hill College in 1941. He then served in the United States Army as a Quartermaster Sergeant during World War ii. After the war, he returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce in 1947. He returned to Oxford after graduation, joined the family auto business, and met and married Mary elizabeth Austin with whom he lived happily for nearly 60 years until her death in 2008. He died peacefully at his home on July 14, 2017 at age 94.

Clement was an active civic leader in the Oxford community. He served on the local board of directors for Oxford National Bank and on the local and state board of directors for Planters National Bank which would later become Centura Bank. He was a charter member of the thorndale Country Club and served on its board of directors for many years including his years as club president. A longtime member of the Oxford Rotary, he served as president and as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the Oxford City Council for 12 years including his work as Mayor Pro tem. He especially enjoyed his service on the Committee of 100, an economic development project for Oxford and granville County.

A longtime member of Oxford Baptist Church, Clement was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon, and a deacon chair. He worked on a variety of church committees, and when asked to serve on the Chowan University Board of trustees, he completed several terms and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award when he retired from that board. in recent years, he worshiped at the Oxford Presbyterian Church as a result of his special friendship with the Reverend Alan Koeneke who officiated at Clement’s services.

Clement shunned the limelight and spotlight, Lindsay recalls. "it was never about him, it was always about someone else. He was extremely humble and preferred to work behind the scenes." this recognition might make him uncomfortable were he here to see it. Yet his generosity to Chowan, freely giving both his time and his treasure, is a story that cries out to be told. His life deserves to be remembered and his legacy deserves to be honored.

m o n T h s Pr eCed i n g a m ena b r oW n ’ s arrival, the Chowan University campus filled with anticipation. Brown is no stranger to Chowan and did not disappoint with her unique and artistic approach to Christian ministry and storytelling.

"Amena Brown can paint memories and stories and emotions with words,” says Reverend Mari Wiles, Minister to the University. “Her voice is the paint brush as she transforms the canvas of our lives, our faith and our culture."

the taylor Religious Heritage Lectures is an endowed lecture series established in 1994 by Dr. and Mrs. Hargus taylor and Chowan University. For this year's series of three lectures, Brown’s audience included students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University. the author and spoken word poet from Atlanta, georgia commanded the attention of every room with her rhythmic elegance, cadenced speech, and challenging message.

“My first lesson about god being real came from my grandmother and great grandmother,” began Brown. Her opening address, “Start With Your Roots,” poetically explained how our elders have planted seeds that allow them to remain with us long after they are gone.

Next, she issued a challenge to the Chowan Christian Service Association (CCSA), reflecting on her own experience of being called to an "untraditional" ministry and her initial fear of that calling. She eventually came to understand that calling looks so different for each of us and went on to say, “Your gift is not for people to know who you are. it is not for you to be famous. it belongs to god and serves the purpose of letting god shine. Be careful what you do with the gift that god has given you.”

in Brown’s final address, “Learn to Fly,” she transitioned seamlessly between narrative and poetic performance, producing aggressive applause, roaring laughter, and moments of still silence in her audience. She ended with the memory of her grandmother scolding her during thunderstorms as a child, saying, “Be still and be quiet while god is working.” She compared this to the storm of constant change and evolution of technology that now surrounds us and said, “it still doesn’t change the fact that in order to know god, you have to do something ancient, and that is to be still and be quiet while god is working.”

D U r i n g t h e j o i n t b o A r D o f trustees and board of visitors luncheon on December 7, 2017, president Christopher White presented john m. tayloe, vice president for Development, the Spirit of Chowan Award. Dr. White stated, “only eleven people have received this award over the period of 15 years. it is a very prestigious and rare honor.”

As Dr. White presented the award, he said, “the newest recipient of this award is a native of this area (bertie County), a Chowan alumnus, an outstanding friend maker, scholarship donor, friend of everyone here. i have developed almost a father-son relationship with him over the last 15 years. he won an audition to be vp of Development before he knew what was happening to him. he bleeds blue and white and his name is john tayloe.” As the room rose in standing applause, tayloe modestly accepted the Spirit of Chowan Award.

“one of the joys of being a University president is the opportunity, to on occasion, recognize individuals for special commendation, beyond the call of duty kind of commendations,” president White explained. jewell faye glover, a former trustee favorite, set up an award called the Spirit of Chowan Award that has been given to people of meritorious service beyond the call of duty.

Class Acts tAylOe, cont inued and his work for the office of Development continue to shine through in every encounter. he believes whole-heartedly in the mission of the University, which is why he is so successful. each of tayloe’s encounters are sincere. Whether he is at work, or not, he represents Chowan to the highest caliber. tayloe says, “one of the greatest joys in my life is helping others make a difference in the life of Chowan. Connecting alumni and friends with the many opportunities to give is a rewarding experience.” it is hard to tell how many lives, directly or indirectly, have been impacted by his efforts.

As vice president for Development, this 1994 Chowan alumnus supervises the Development staff, inclusive of the University relations team. in addition to serving on the president’s senior staff and securing gifts to ensure the financial competency of the University, he provides oversight for seven full-time staff members, plus student employees and interns. he is a humble leader who does not ask his staff to do something he would not do himself. he provides guidance and support to those around him, constantly offering opportunities he believes will better them. he is well-known and active in the community. he serves without the expectation of recognition.

the Spirit of Chowan Award is intended to honor extraordinary individuals who so embody the heart and soul of the University that they warrant recognition by the University community. this may be a student, faculty, staff member, or friend of the university who has overcome significant adversity; who has displayed the characteristics of a servant in the model of Christ; who has remained committed to the mission of the University and his or her personal relationship with god; or who has embodied the spirit of the history, mission and perseverance of the University.

em b r aCi n g a n e W v isUaL i d en T i T Ythe basis of the new identity rests on the University's strong foundation and core values. the design

highlights historic McDowell Columns Hall, easily the most beloved and recognizable campus icon. the central pathway symbolizes the path to success trod by students both as they enter Chowan University

to pursue their education and as they depart to pursue their future goals. A laurel wreath and the year of founding echo the enduring Chowan University seal which is now elevated to special and significant use only. Close inspection reveals a cross and chalice built into the negative space of the artwork, resonating

the University's Christian heritage and the guiding philosophy of "Faith in Your Future."
