Letter from the Editor

On the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti, the 14th January 2014 my Endeavour of doing something for the Senior citizens of

JVT of age 70 years and above came into reality at our first meeting of Club-70. The founder members met for the first time at the residence of Shri V.P. Gupta, N-511, at 11.0 hrs. to discuss on social prob-lems. Such meetings continued on the 14th of every month in rotation at founder member’s residence. There in one of the meetings I suggested to expand our activities to whole of JVT Society and shri V.P. Gupta agreed to do so whole heartedly.

Thus we proceeded for a door to door survey of all the flats in JVT and listed about 130 Senior citizens of age 70 years and above.

Our first get together of such Senior citizens was organized on the 2nd October 2014 besides the swimming-pool of JVT in open at 10:30 hrs. This get-together was very well attended by our dear Senior citizens and they encouraged us to go ahead with this social venture. We gave it a name ‘seciclub - JVT’ and decided to greet again all the Senior Citizens on the October 2014 in Gazebo at the Central Park during our regular Diwali Mela, where photographs of our 2nd October function were displayed and a souvenir-mug, bearing “seciclub –JVT - 2014” was launched for sale too.

To welcome New Year 2015, we celebrated the New Year as “cake Sunday” on the first Sunday of the month January in our Central Park by cutting a cake

and distributing cup-cakes to all Senior Citizens who had got together to exchange New Year greetings.

Subsequently we celebrated Spring Festival in our Community Hall that our JVTAOA has magnamously offered us without any charges. We organized a talk by Dr. Sat Paul Batura on Anti-Addiction for the benefit all residents of JVT Society. When the brutal summers set on Gurgaon in the month of June 2015 in the Central Park, where we have invit-ed small children of financially challenged parents, from the roadside school to sing their prayer “Itani Shakti Hame Dena Daata….” and dance as they like. This function was also very successful occasion for whole of JVT as about 400 glasses of Sharbet was distributed. During this one year period a few of our dear Senior Citizens have achieved ‘Nirvana’ and have gone away on unknown journey. We have prayed for them and condoled their departure. At the same time we have registered new members also. We wish to interact with everybody in good and bad times and assure our support at all the time. The support of Club-70 was immense in our all the activities. The Chief advisor, Retd. Air Como-dr. Shri R.P. Paliwal and other advisors along with the very enthusiastic team of our dedicated Volun-teers made our all events memorable happenings. The young volunteers are paving their way for bet-ter times when they retire at the age of 70 years. This process must continue and it will happen for sure because we are setting an example for them to follow in sense of well being.

MY ADDRESS TO SENIOR CITIZENS OF JVT – MEET

ON THE 2ND OCTOBER 2014

Prakash Bajpai ka Sabhi ko Sadar Namaskar.

Mere Sabhi Sathiyo aaj Gandhi jayanti ke shubh awasar par hum sub senior citizens of JVT yahan ekaththe huye hian – yah ek sub-hagya hai.

A feeling of fellowship for the senior citizens of age 70 and above years brought in my mind that we should have a more cordial liv-ing relationship in this walled society of ours, therefore we all such people must form a venue to meet and share our feelings and views among ourselves by such meetings regularly.

In the present modern age we shall retire at the age of 70 years not earlier because in general longevity has increased quite substan-tially in India too and specially in upper economy class.

But still one day people have to go in an unknown journey like three of our dear ones that I know in our society have gone into Nirvana during 4 months of preparation of today’s meeting. Those departed souls are smt. Nandani Mukharji (nearly 90) of H/611 in May, Smt. Shakuntala Sundriyal (87) of I/314 in June and Sri kapoor sahib (82) of C/613 in September 2014. We send them our warmest love to mix with God’s mercy.

We Senior Citizens can emphatically pronounce loudly that “humse hai zamana, zamane se hum nahin”. The junior generation is be-cause of us and we are not because of them. Therefore it becomes their duty to take care of us in our living in a more happy, helpful and more productive life. At the same time it should be our priority to intermix and inter act in most cooperative manners with our fellow citizens. We all are at the age to preach and sermon others there-fore we hardly need any preaching & sermons ourselves. Therefore I strongly advise my brothers and sisters to take care of own Health, take care of own Wealth and make a habit of being Happy at all the time.

We have gathered today, this morning to meet each other and to know each other as much as we can do possibly.

EKAM SAT VIPRA BAHUDHA VADANTI

“Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti ” is a Sutra quote from all the over one hundred Upnishads. This aphorism means: “That which exists is ONE sages call it by various names.” This idea from Upnishads is ingrained into the civilized civilization of India for thousands of years resulted in the extreme tolerance of Hindus on the whole. Jains & Buddhists capitalize on the idea of coexistence and tolerance. This idea was further expanded in urging the masses to see ‘HIS’ presence, God’s presence, in every atom of the Universe; and this generated the presence of same, ONE, soul in all living things. In the ‘Gita’ it was most emphatically stressed when lord Krishna tells Arjuna that the Soul is Immortal, it is fallacy that you can kill anybody or anybody can kill the Soul; therefore soul can neither be killed nor it can kill.

If soul is one in every one and soul is immortal then what was the need to fight a battle like Mahabharata? This is because same very soul when takes a cover of human body due to Karmas it also acquires ill and good virtues. Therefore a good virtuous soul-body must destroy become a subjugated insect-living creature. Lack of this awareness destroys the fundamental law of the Universe of “Unified ‘one’ Energy”-Ekam Sat…..

Many Teachers, who thought otherwise, taught and are teaching that their propounded way is ‘the only way’ to realize immortality of one’s (already immortal) Soul, but to acquire physical pleasure of the body through soul. If their followers thought fit to ‘Impose’ their views on others in the hope to increase and add to their pleasure of thought and for a wishful after death pleasure also then they will indulge in bringing people to their fold. The means adopted to convert to their fold may be any and many; they may say that achieved end will justify the means. The weak in their belief will try to convert those who are weak in their convictions. Thus they prepare a clan of weaklings en-mass in the name of God.

But those who see ‘ONE’ in every one, should they submit to such forceful conversion to other belief in the name of TOLERANCE? Tolerance does not mean to become loose in discrimination between a right idea and a forced idea in any way. These people should convince them to follow the Universal Law of “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti”. Lord Krishna made Arjuna to fight his brothers for a right idea; saying “Hato Va Prapyasi Swargum Jitva Bhokshayse Maheem…”

ANNIVERSARY NUMBER 2ND OCTOBER 20158

OBJECTIVE OF SENIOR CITIZEN CLUB OF JALAVAYU TOWERS

Now due to better food, hygiene and Medical facility and its advancement and other favorable factors, the longevity of human beings has increased quite a lot and especially of those people who are endowed with better finances and privileges. Not going on to the Government policy on the Senior Citizen age bars but in pragmatic way every one should be actively work-ing up to the age of 70 years then should declare one self a Senior Citizen to the Society.

All people do not age equally and neither arrives at the age of 70 years in same manner but due to indi-vidual conditions and circumstances their arrival at retirement age is differently. Therefore their needs may also be variously different. But in an upper mid-dle class society I have observed that it is not the need of food, shelter, medical care but it is of diminished sense of well being.

Therefore we have a cause for Senior Citizens of age70 Years and above and that is to reduce the loneliness, boredom and bring in active participation among

themselves and in the society they live in as a whole, to help each other sharing laughter and sorrows and taking in bravely the usual and unusual physical and mental problems.

Thus after a door to door survey for Senior Citizens of age 70 years and above in our Society of 1,000 flats in 19 Blocks; we organized our first ‘get together’ of such grand people on the day of Mahatma that in 2nd Oc-tober 2014 which was very well attended with great enthusiasm. Thereafter we celebrated on Diwali, New Year and the Spring Festival on 22nd March 2015 but we kept on visiting our members regularly during the period and increased our inter action. Now we wish to publish a small magazine for our annual day which will be on the auspicious day of 2nd October 2015.

The positive response we received from our would-be Senior Citizens of this society is fantastic. Their coop-eration and contribution is exemplary. We wish them better and more and more enjoyable times.

THOUGHTS AND TRANSPARENT MIND

What we often express when we talk to others? Why are we ever compulsive to converse with others? Why is there a deep inner urge to com-municate? Why do we communicate actually?

Why do we put ourselves in dialogue with others?

The act of communication per se is a means to coordinate our thoughts with thoughts of others and less as mere expressions of our feelings. We are unique & individual beings but we per-ceive this uniqueness as an odd quality. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed with our individuality that we find ourselves too strange and solitary and we communicate to find whether oth-ers are like us too! We communicate to share this uniqueness. We communicate to get ourselves generalized. In any way we are not compatible with our uniqueness.

When we communicate we find a extraordinary change in our-selves. We are affected by the thoughts of others. The level at which we think alike gives us respite. By arguments and raising counterpoints we reach at some reasonable position.

We are affected by our own thoughts. The inner environment of our psyche is never in peace.

We are continuously engaged with our thoughts while dealing with the world. But are we alone subjected to such kind of ac-tivity of thoughts. Why at first place have we thoughts? When we are concerned with whys and how’s of the objectified world. We want to convey our feelings to the world, to our fellows. Our fellows may be having entirely different feelings and different thoughts.

If ever we just change the subjective position with our fellows. It is like we change our seat in a bus or train. We put ourselves in their head and hearts and read their thought and actions. Like a writer we may understand his inner feelings.

For this we will have to have a transparent mind. Like an author who has a tans parent mind. He can project his subjectivity in any one member of Homo sapiens and even in inanimate ob-jects and other primordial forms of life. He can understand that his inner reactions are just representative reactions of the oth-

– Dr. Swaran Omcaur

13A CLUB OF SENIOR CITIZENS

ers. Perhaps that is why a writer can writer about the innermost feelings of a saint and a tyrant with equal. But is it the prerogative of writers and artists only, as distinct from others to act with such empathy?

To say the least it is that of a transparent mind. Can’t we create such a transparent mind in ourselves? A mind which can watch itself even while engaged with the outer world; a mind that do not interfere by its bi-ases and prejudgments while forming the reactions; a mind that can act like a mirror which reflects every-thing and take nothing; a mind which is a pure energy or a mind which is not a mind at all.

Such an open mind while treading the thorny patch of life collects many gems of eternal truth. What is this never fading truth is reproduced in the form of poetry, stage or cinema or communiqués and blogs on the web pages? Though they make the feelings generalized but contribute to some sort of general understanding.

However there is a confused arena of thoughts too. People with their egoistic tendencies and utter un-truthfulness to their own feelings have created chaos and disorder. They do not convey what they actually feel. They show to the world their generalized side only. A young entrant in the world experience be-wilderment when he sees is a wide chiasm between what the people feel and what they express. There is wide gap between the two. This external chaos what this gap creates compounds his internal confusion.

But a transparent mind sets the record straight. He questions and struggles to find answers. He ex-presses what is generally considered inexpressible. His thought though works in a limited field but has an ability to clarify the things in a certain way. Such a thought illuminate all other thoughts. Such thoughts from transparent mind are complete thoughts.

This is a pure thought which pierces the mind like a sword and can move without any undue exercise of control on the part of the recipient. Such pure thought cleanse the mind of all troublesome and worrisome thoughts. It is a way of catharsis in which thoughts end by ending themselves. This will eventually lead to the blessed state of thoughtlessness.

Why aren’t we always blessed with such pure thoughts? Why we are continuously visited upon by old, stale thoughts? Despite all distress and agony that we ex-

perience from this activity why don’t we get liberated from this at all? We are we always in the habit of think-ing in a limited field on the same lines and pattern.

A thought creates an affect which is necessary for its own survival. It gives the mind the luxury of riding on its back and experience that affect. The mind jumps like a grasshopper from one thing to another. Till mind remains attached to this ordinarily pleasurable activity, it stretches it to any length.

But with exercise of little awareness one starts ob-serving the futility of this restless act. The gradual strengthening of this awareness, which we now term as the observer in us stifles the unrestrained freedom of thoughts. But this is very unlikely to occur if this ob-server is under the intellectual spell.

Due to this the observer adopts the path of rationality. It would give many explanations and justifications to our various acts and motives in the world. It keeps on moving with its curious and curious theorizations till is lost in the endless world of cause and effect. Ultimately if will create its own prison in the form of fixed ideology which takes it farther and farther away from the reality.

The real observation is rather non-fractional atten-tiveness. Can you observe your thoughts without an-alyzing them any justification; without entertaining their affect? You simply attend them without becom-ing elated or morbid.

This happens only when you simply watch your weak-ness and do not comment upon this as your own weakness but term it as weakness of the mankind; when good and bad for you are just two parts of the whole; when you discover for yourself there exists in the world an absolute goodness and relative good-ness and discover further that relative goodness is as bad as bad because it is always raised against bad; when you strive for higher goodness which do not rely upon the bad for its survival. It does not disapprove the bad; with such an attitude you’ve freed yourself from the world of opposites.

Then you’ve freed yourself from that agonizing activ-ity of thoughts produced by undue reactions within your mind. When there is little thought activity within the mind there is enough free space to confront ever changing life; enough time to concentrate upon other creative activities of the mind and there is release of immense energy.

AGING GRACEFULLY

Every age has some advantages. Old age has some better advantages. I would explainWe are passing through different ages, like child-

hood, adolescence, youth, adult-hood, middle age and then old age. Every age is important in some way and a stepping stone towards higher state. The age of child-hood or adolescence determines our character and morals. In the present age, a youth is exposed to all knowledge about the world. He uses cell phone, I-pad, smart phone, TV etc. While young age is spent actively with these diversions, adulthood is spent by discharg-ing the family responsibilities. In short throughout our life, we keep ourselves busy by learning about our sur-roundings, about the people related to us, about the work place, our friends, colleagues, society and world. We learn everything about these except about our-selves. Seldom we sit and ponder who we are, what our ultimate destination is and how we can reach it. Old age has better advantages because only in old age, we get the time, the disposition, and the right environ-ment to ponder over these questions.A good part of our life is spent towards material devel-opment. Material development is necessary so that we can ensure better standard of living for ourselves and ensure better education for our off-springs. But mate-rial development can only be a means and not an end in itself. For everyone, there comes at some point of time, an occasion to draw a line. He would realize that he has to move away from his possession and properties and the only solace and comfort he would get is from spiri-tual fulfillment. It is the old age that helps the individual in retrieving the ground that he has lost in earlier ages.We have all along been looking outward. We have all along been looking towards the unreal world outside. Old age provides us the opportunity to turn our atten-tion from the unreal world outside to the real world inside, the ever existing Ataman. Para it is likely that we may have conducted our life based on the whims and fancies of our mind. It is possible that we have allowed our mind a free run. It is possible that we have been a slave to the dictates of the mind. When we ruminate over the past, we realize that our mind has not allowed us to reach our natural state of peace and bliss. The mind is always wavering, disturbing, fault-finding, causing anger and creating ego. Mind

Dr. V.S.Krishnan

is the biggest obstruction in our path towards spiri-tual fulfillment. Old age is an opportunity to turn the mind to its source. Mind is only a bundle of thoughts. Once we start questioning the origin of thoughts, the mind subsides. Take a glass of water, put some small pieces of rice of serials there and stir them. You will find all them getting mixed up together. Keep them for a while. The rice particles stay down while the wa-ter above becomes pure again. Similarly, do not stir your thoughts. Allow them to rest peacefully some-where down. Never allow the thoughts to rise up. Whenever thoughts arise, think of God. Never allow the thoughts to dominate you. Once you become free from thoughts, you attain a divine status, a man free from all attachments and aversions. When you are free from all differences and divergence, you experi-ence real happiness. Let us not think of the bygone yesterday. Let us think of the good today. This today is available to us and let us avail it fully. We would have built and also lost many relations dur-ing our early age. As we reach the old age, we gradu-ally become alone. Now we realize that human relations would also come and go. What sustains for ever is the relation with God. All along we have been counting on human relations. Yes, human relations, based on ethical and moral values, are to be fostered and preserved, but at the same time, we should build up relation with God who could lend his solid support, when we need it most.Old age gives us the opportunity towards spiritual up-liftment. This is the time to realize that you have done your best for your near and dear ones and now the time has come for you to break every link with you have bound yourself with the world. This is the age when you should detach yourself from your immedi-ate world and attach yourself with the ever-existing reality, Atman. This is the time you should free your-self from all bondages and liberate yourself to a new world of realization. This is the age of truth (Satya) Chith (consciousness) and Ananda (bliss).

DEH SAJJAN ASEESDIAN JION HOVAI SAHIB SION MEL.… NANAK

The last leg of the journey is an occasion to rejoice and be happy that prospects of meeting the SA-HIB are bright. With that wish in the mind NANAK seeks the blessings of companions and friends for

the AUSPICIOUS DAY. You were set out on this journey, by Him, a very very long time back. Consider yourself highly blessed as now you have reached a stage when you have the vision and the where-with-all, being sufficiently learned and awakened to realize the purpose. Experiencing old age has its own charm and value. By this time all doubts and misconceptions should have disappeared. Time to throw away the unwanted loads on the head.Agreed, life is never without problems which can be of various types, peculiar to each one of us. Some will be of chronic nature and some short term. Each problem has some solution or no solution. Where some solution is pos-sible, we do our bit. And if there is no salutation it got to be accepted as His will. By this time we have this discernment as have an eventful and educating life behind us.So far, most of the time had gone towards personal issues and matters, An unavoidable phenomenon. By this time the load of direct responsibilities should have considerably lessened. However, one should not disconnect. Your expe-rience and quality advice can be of great value to the fam-ily. There is potential for lot of good and enjoyable give and take vis-à-vis the grand children. See the Lord in them and enjoy the blessings. Within all this you must remain now fixed on the underlying deep purpose of life besides main-taining yourself in shape as fine as possible.Keeping one-self occupied in positive and gainful activities will help in maintaining good physical, mental and spiritual health. We all know the importance and methods also for maintaining physical health. The physical activities should be a judicious mix of exercises to cater for various different types of needs of body functions. We need aerobics, sup-pleness maintaining, strengthening , balancing and muscle strength maintaining exercises. Weight-bearing exercises are absolutely essential to maintain strength and bone density. An important fact to be noted is that weight ex-ercises are a very big help for keeping the heart strong and healthy. The only way to exercise heart muscles is to exer-cise the large body muscles. Internal muscles and organs too need exercises and yogic exercises are the answer. Or-ganize your exercise time keeping various requirements in focus.Maintaining good mental health needs deliberate efforts. There are ways and means. Like the body, the mind too needs good nourishments and exercise. Good nourishment comes from good company, good thoughs, good thoughs,

good reading and good actions. We do know about these. Need is to be deliberate and conscious. Exercises like cross word. Sudoku, chess and such like which require thinking should get some time on daily or weekly basis. Memorizing some data, verses couplets, new words/phrases, writing about something that interests you and it may be possible to find something more like this. In the evening/night we can spend few minutes in recollecting what all happened during the day, what all did others say, what you said to others. Utilize all God-given faculties and facilities. Use it or lose it is a very meaningful saying.Last, but not the least is the activity which is the divine purpose of life which amidst the hustle-bustle, turmoil’s, attractions, worries of routine life cannot be forgotten/ignored. Any specific recommendation in this regard will be un-called for. When the honest intention is there God will show the way. Let us try to remember HIM all the time. HE is never to be forgotten. Sabna jean ka ik data so main vissar na jaee. ---- Nanak. Focus now should shift from the MICRO to the MACRO. All Creation is one family. So, let us look outside the narrow confines. See what can we do for other members who are in the need of some love, caring and look-after. The thought of the capability being limited should not be a dampen. God knows it all. It is the will and attitude that matters. Small drops fill big tanks. Do what-ever you can to be of some service to humanity. No bet-ter pooja or worship than this.’ Vich Duniya sev kamaeeai ta Dargah baisan paeeai.’ – Nanak. Place to sit in god’s abode/court will be assured only by service while here in the world. It will be better to realize, accept and mould our attitudes suitably at the earliest. Running away from Truth is sow-ing seeds for more serious problems in times ahead. Let us pray for each other that our preparations to welcome the auspicious day are moving in the right direction with right intent and purpose. Ultimately there is no running away from Truth. Reminded of the song. ’ Zindagi ko bahut piar humney keeya ……. .The year and timings of the meeting/marrying up with the Divine, SAMBAT SAHA, are fixed/written, LIKHYA. So requesting friends/colleagues’ for their good wishes and pouring of oil, TEL, to mark the beginning of the prepara-tions for the the auspicious occasion in very much in order. SAMBAT SAHA LIKHYA MIL KAR PAVOH TEL. DEH SAJ-JAN ASSEEDIAN JOIN HOVAI SAHIB SION MEL!!!!!My profound thanks to our respected and dear SH Prakash Bajpai, a senior seeker on ST, for providing the motivation. HOW EASTERN PHILOSOPHY MEETS WESTERN

The work of mind is to think and carry out in practice the things that have been thought. In India the oldest known history starts with Harrappan & Mohenje-daro period that

gives glimpses of very ancient but very advanced civi-lization of human beings. But it does not give any idea of the philosophy they were observing during that pe-riod of time about 5,000 year ago from present time.

Historically known period, where some human thoughts are observed in practice, is the period in India which is called the Vedic period and it is about 3,500 years ago from now. The knowledge which is called Veda was in practice but how this knowledge was acquired at that period of time is shrouded in mystery. The four types of knowledge that was put in human use were Spititual & ritual, Music & fine arts, Sciences & arts, Medical & well-being. The compilation (samhita) of all these knowledge in four parts was put in the form of Vedas.

Over the years, greatest development took place in the most favourite of human aspects and that is Spirituality. And this produced many great think-ers those we call Rishies or Philosophers. Accord-ing their own lines of thoughts they produced many schools of philosophies or Darshans. The major ones are: Nyaya, Vaisheshiki, Yoga, Mimansa, Vedanta, Charvak, Jainism & Buddhism. The names of philos-opher Rishies, who propounded them, are Gautama, kannada, Kapila, Patanjali, Jaimini, Many rishies of Upnishads, Brahaspati, Parswanath & Mahavir and Siddhartha Gautama Buddha. This all had happened Before Christian Era.

Most of these philosophies propounded that if there is any God, there in only one God. And they believed in the Immortality of the Soul. Thus those who be-lieved in Vedas were called Astik theories or Theis-tic. But some philosophers said that there is no need of God and Vedas need not to be believed and thus these were called Nastik theories or Atheistic. But all were for well being to human society and for its progress in happiness through Spirituality and not through materialism. They also said that there is a

purpose and objective in the Universe and therefore Socrates was the greatest of Greek philosophers dur-ing the years 470 to 399 BCE, who said that “knowl-edge can grow through criticism”. Socrates never wrote anything but his disciple Plato wrote Socrates and his own philosophy in his books. Plato believed in Immortality of Soul and Plato & Pythagoras be-lieved in Re-birth or reincarnation. Is it not the same that Indian Upnishads have been telling us? Some philosophers before Socrates had been saying that things are made only of four elements viz. Earth, Water, Air and Fire; is not the same as Indian Sankya Darshan had been saying?.

Disciple of Plato was Aristotle (384-322 BCE), the teacher of Alexander the great, who brought in ‘For-mal Logic’ which is still in use in present time. Nyaya & Vaisheshiki Darshans of ancient India had already in place the Formal Logic & Analytical Logic in place known as Tarka Shastra, as means to prove validity of any argument or a thing. Aristotle had also said that “Virtue is a mid way point between two ex-tremes each of which is vice”.

And disciple of Aristotle was another Greek called Archimedes (287-212 BCE), a great scientist of that time and also a philosopher, endorsed it.

The most important point up to here is that during this period of time of history there was no physical or any kind of contact between Greek philosophers of this 500 years of before Christ with any of Indian philosophers or philosophies of India which was already about a thou-sand years old in North-West India. It is a thing to won-der that how was same ideas thought by two separate civilizations at two different places independently? The answer again lies in Indian belief that “Truth is always One”, so the investigation of truth will be mathemati-cally one and the same. This ancient description is suf-ficiently shows that how Eastern philosophy meets Western philosophy at the time when religion was not an interference in human relations.

During this period there developed four major schools of philosophy in the West namely,

ANNIVERSARY NUMBER 2ND OCTOBER 201520

(1) The Cynics; They defy all said philosophies and they lived like ‘Aghories’ of India. The famous cyn-ics were Antithesis and Diogenes who said “I am the citizen of the world” (404-323 BCE).

(2) The Sceptics: Believing in both sides of an argu-ment is called Sceptics. Pyrroh (320-230 BCE) was a great philosopher of this school. In modern times David Hume was a great Sceptic who believed in the “Theory of Uncertainty” This is like ‘Shayad-vad’ of Buddhism of India.

(3) The Epicureans: “Enjoy life while you have it”. It is same as the philosophy of ‘Charvaks’ of India as they say “Rinam Kritva Ghratam Piveta”. Epicurus (340-262 BCE) was the philosopher that influenced the scientific development in Europe in 16th and 17th centuries.

(4) The Stoics: They believe that reason is above all and nature is God-idea. It is very similar to Indian ‘Sankhya Darshan’. Philosopher Zeno in (334-262 BCE) had propounded this theory. Marcus Aurelius said for human beings that “They have ‘right’ to live and ‘right’ to die”. So called ‘stiff upper lip’ is due to stoicism.

Now above mentioned four types of philosophical schools are basics of further development of Eu-ropean philosophies and societies. Now from the early Middle Ages through Dark Ages (500 to 1400 AD) in Europe came in Modern Ages and from the 16th century onwards when orthodox Christianity & religion was not ruling the human thoughts, this re-sulted in great scientist philosophers starting from Copernicus, Kepler, Galelio and Isaac Newton etc. with their scientific theories, they made a scientific revolution. Their theories were soon converted into through technologies to become an Industrial Revo-lution in England & Europe.

The modern philosophers like Descartes, Spinoza, Voltaire and Kant etc changed the thinking process in Europe. The German philosopher Schopenhauer (1788-1960) when he learnt for the first time Indian philosophy of Upanishads & Gita, he was so deep-ly impressed & affected by it that he danced with joy and marveled Eastern philosophy almost to his madness. And later in late 19th century Swami Vive-kananda further spread the ‘Sanatana’ philosophy of India in North; human beings also have a purpose and objective in the Universe and for humans, it is to achieve Liberation.

Ancient society of India, through her great thinkers, greatly went very deep into purely spiritualistic in-vestigations. But at the same time these societies had also progressed in scientific and materialistic discoveries to a very great extent. In the golden pe-riod of Vedic Age, which is said to be from 1,500 BCE to 600 AD; Indians had discovered most important scientific knowledge such as Numbers, Zero, value of Pi, Decimal system, Weights an Measurements, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Astronomy, As-trology, Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, Metallurgy, Navigation, Atomic theory, Gravity, they knew that Earth was round & revolved around Sun, Music & Arts, Architecture, Literature, Economics, Politics, Ethics & Logic, Grammar, Sexology, Agriculture, Textile, games of Chess & Snakes and Ladders etc. They knew all this and practiced thousand years be-fore the Western countries besides the invasion of Alexander of Macedonia in the fourth century BCE and his retreat from western Indian soil.

Decline of India had started after the 6th century AD when invasion of North India began from her West-ern front by White Huns, then continuous plunders from Islamic societies till they established Mogul Empire and then British ruled India from 1853 till 1947 when India became once again a free country. During this period everything Indian went down in deep decline.

The continuous and repeatedly relentless invasions from out side, on India, through her Western front by White Huns, then continuous plunders from Is-lamic societies till they established Mogul Empire and then British ruled India from 1858 till 1947 when India became once again a free country. During this period everything Indian went down in deep decline. The continuous and repeatedly relentless inva-sions from out side, on India, through her Western front, brought Indian mind more and more to con-centrate on religious and ritualistic side of their ad-vanced spiritualistic philosophy that may be called as a last refuge for survival. The impact of Jainism & Buddhism teaching the philosophy of ‘Ahinsa Parmodhrma’ (non-violence is the highest religion) made Indians unduly tolerant to invaders by adopt-ing a universal slogan of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam’ (whole earth is one family). Indians hardly had any scientists as philosophers but spirituality of self de-nial, excessive tolerance and spirit of coexistence bordering up to cowardice of understanding and compromise that became a virtue, made natives a

picture of most submissive types of humans behind irrational guise of religion that made Indian to suffer a slavery of a thousand year.

After an opiate slumber of over-religion, over-sup-pression and over – population of one thousand years now we have a new India of 21st century that has risen afresh, vibrant and truly free from ortho-dox religious control. This India together with rest of the world will help lead this planet Earth to victory in an inter-planetary competition.

Indians wrote Vedas, Upanishads, Epics like Rama-yana & Mahabharata and what not but it seems that they never wrote history of past events. They creat-ed history but never created chronological records of historical creations. We have to learn our own his-tory from the writers of the West. We have to learn our own formal & analytical logic from the Western philosophers. Why is it so because our writings and Libraries were destroyed by the invaders and rulers during the long slavery period of thousand years?

But chronological period of Western philosophy is present and we shall proceed from the known be-ginnings. Philosophy is a shared search for the Truth.THELES was the first philosopher of the Western world in Greece, in the Sixth century BCE, before Socrates and he said that “Everything is made from One thing……”. How true is the statement! Is it not that everything is made of Atoms, one thing only, and God created the atoms? Indian sages had said earlier that ‘Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti’ in Ve-dic knowledge that One God created the Universe.

Heraclitus had asked “has time any beginning or end?” and Indian philosopher had been saying that time is eternal. Pythagoras period was from 570 to 499 BCE and he said that mathematics is root of all the sciences and now all scientists say that it is true. Pythagoras was the person who brought in the terms ‘Philosophy’ and ‘Cosmos’ that Indian talked about Darshan and Brahmand.

America, Britain and Europe, while philosopher Maxmullar did his part of translation of Indian philo-sophical-scriptures.

Thus the list of most modern western philosophers grows on in common grounds of belief in “One God, Immortality of Soul, Freedom of Will, Unification of Energy and Theory of Karmas & rebirth”.

Philosophers like Karl Marx and Nietzsche pro-duced Communism and Nazism and both did not last because they excluded God in their practice of philosophy but philosophy of Pragmatism gave an improved version of Plato’s Democracy to the Amer-icas and the world which is lasting since over centu-ries so far and India is her biggest member.

The later philosophers of America and Europe such as Einstein and Popper ushered in once again the an-cient philosophy of Socrates and Plato and logic of Aristotle to bring in the best through philosopher and ecomomist J.S.Mill the thought of the ‘good for the majority’ that translates to Indian thought, “Bahujan Hitaya Bahujan Sukhaya”- greatest good for greatest number. Well-being of majority is Democracy.

The above scheme was to construct apartments for Phase-ll, Gurgaon complex, which was constructed on Plot Nos. 37, 38, and 39 measuring approximately 15 acres of land at Sector-56 of HUDA.

Though construction was commenced during year 1997-97, the project was delayed and only construct-ed during 2000-2001 and 750 apartments both of type A and of type B were allotted.

As the Society, called Jalvayu Towers was formed the first management body was either elected/nominat-ed with first President as AVM, M. Singh who unfortu-nately died during year 2002.

PHASE-lllGurgaon Phase-lll project was also conceived during year 2000 and an adjoining plot no. 40 was got allot-ted through HUDA also in Sector-56, though the cost of the land has escalated.

Phase-lll project was also constructed by the same Construction Companies and hence it was completed by year August 2002 and allotted to the members of four Blocks of type A and one Block of type B apart-ments.

Two Phases i.e. ll & lll being adjoining on plot nos. 37, 38, 39, & 40 of sector-56, the AFNHB took the fol-lowing decision for its management through one So-ciety:-

Sri. C.P.Grover

Residents of Society of Gurgaon Phase ll & lll proj-ects will be ‘one society’. This Society will comprise of members duly elected from the allot tees of both the Phases on a ‘Prorata Basis’.

The existing Society continued managing Phase ll & lll services and apartments without extending any special consideration to smaller phase of five-Blocks as advised by AFNHB to elect Society members on Prorata-Basis from it.

THINK!

All of us are 70+ or 80+ years of age. We ac-complished life duties or responsibilities to the utmost satisfaction of our abilities in all walks of life.

In doing so above, we are not aware of our inner self due to lack of time, or due to lack of interest in pursu-ing the knowledge. Now we have plenty of time and have a little bit of knowledge and to know further about the knowledge of self or Almighty. We have performed Pooja or meditation in a hurried way due to shortage or time. Now with plenty of time avail-able, we have to fruitfully use this time by concentrat-ing on self or Almighty to know, either by studying scriptures of listening to spiritual discourses or pray-ing and praising the Almighty.

The Self of ATMA or Almighty is one and the same. If we think for Self or inner Self, the inner Self is not the external organs of the body, or the internal organs of the body and it is not the Mind and intellect. If dis-criminates for the real thing existence to know, we find the above organs of perishable nature, and the thing that remains is to function our bodily organs, and it is the Self our inner Self. This Self is called also ATMA or Almighty in a broader sense. And in this presence of ATMA or Almighty, the mind and the in-tellect function and further function of external bodily organs. The internal body organs function without the presence of mind and intellect. That means Almighty is taking care of them.

All the bodily organs either internal or external are replaceable and perishable in Nature and inner Self or ATMA and Almighty ever exists. The world or PRAKRITI is of perishable nature even now or in fu-ture. The being, nonbeing and human beings are the world of objects, so the world of objects are subjected to change and perish. What is the use of acquiring the knowledge of perishable things? What benefit will we get to our ATMA or Self and for Almighty, So thinking in this way elaborately, sincerely with great faith, we came to understand the waste of time that was done till now. So in thinking in this way we are awaken. Now Arise Aware, Awake and Adore Almighty with

Sri. A N Rao

the available precious time. Do not waste this pre-cious time. If we waste this time we will not only lose this present time of human birth we passed so many births, and lastly we get this human birth to our up-ward journey to pursue further and further Almighty. We are provided the intellect to discriminate, the thing that exists forever i.e. the Almighty. So the pur-pose of human birth is not to dwell in the worldly ob-jects, the human birth is to Adore Almighty, to know thoroughly HIS knowledge. If we fail to do so, we will lose this human birth in coming next birth and what birth we will get cannot be assumed.

So think seriously with great faith. So think seriously Arise, Aware, Awake and adore. This precious time we will not get again.

If we think about the glory of the objects created by Almighty in the ‘PRAKRITI’ or the world of objects and their compactness, beautifulness including the human body system, Definitely we are amazed and give raise the sincerity and faith to pursue his knowl-edge to know HIM.

So THINK….THINK….THINK

PRAY HIM PRAISE HIM ADORE HIM CHANT HIS HOLY NAME.

Ever forever and any time at any time.

ANNIVERSARY NUMBER 2ND OCTOBER 201528

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS: AN OVERVIEW

Types of drugs

A drug’, broadly speaking, is any chemical substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organ-ism, alters normal bodily function. In the area of Sub-stance Use Disorders a drug or a substance is any chemical that, upon consumption, leads to changes in the functioning of human mind and more specifi-cally leads to a state of intoxication.

Some of these substances, like Alcoholic beverages and Nicotine (Tobacco), are legally allowed for trade and consumption in India (albeit with some regula-tions). These are called Licit (or Legal) substances. The trade and consumption of many other substanc-es ar strictly prohibited and are therefore called Illicit (or Illegal) substances.

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists substance use disorders for the following classes of substances.

Substances listed by WHO

Alcohol

Opioids

Cannabis

Sedative Hypnotics

Cocaine

Other stimulants. Including caffeine

Hallucinogens

Tobacco

Volatile solvents

Dependence:

A cluster of physiological, behavioral and cognitive phenomena in which use of a substance or a class of substances takes on a much higher priority for a given individual than other behaviors that once had greater value.

Causes of substance use and dependency:

There is no simple answer to the question why peo-ple take drugs? It is safe to say that there are some biological factors (factors inside the individual who is using the substance) as well as some factors which in-teract to give rise to substance dependency.

Brain researchers have found a pleasure center in the brain, which becomes activated when ‘good’ (i.e. lik-able) things like food, sex, music comes our way. It

The effects of alcohol on the user depends on the level of alcohol in the blood (called: blood alcohol con-centration or BAC) and are as follows

BAC In mg/dl EffectsAround 40 to 80 Feeling of happiness, feeling of relaxation and talking freely, some clumsy move-

ments of hands and legs, reduced alertness but user believes himself to be alert.More than 80 Noisy, moody, impaired judgment, impaired driving ability. At 100-200 Blurred vision, unsteady gait, talking loudly, slurred speech, quarrelsome, aggres-

sive, gross motor in-coordination.At 200-300 Inability to remember the experience – blackout.More than 300 Coma and in higher levels even death.

Page 31: Magazine Design & Layout

29A CLUB OF SENIOR CITIZENS

has been shown that drug use stimulates the same pleasure center and therefore is felt by the user as a highly satisfying and rewarding experience, resulting in repeated use. Availability, social sanction and peer pressure of drug use are the chief drug related fac-tors that promote initiation and continuation of use. Many drug users also try to counteract their “painful feeling” by taking drugs.

Consequences of drug use:

Health – Increased morbidity and mortality

Family – Fights, Neglect, Separation /Divorce, loss of trust

Legal – Fights, Accidents, crime

Financial - Over expenditure on drugs, Debts etc.

Social - Stigma and Isolation

Occupational - Absentism, Reduced trust, Loss of Job

Psychological consequences : Psychological compli-cations range from lack of wellbeing to frank depres-

sion and other mental illnesses. Any underlying men-tal Illness is generally aggravated by substance use.

Legal consequences : Substance users are always at conflict with law. They are often incarcerated when caught with illicit substances and a life revolving in and out of jail follows, thereby severely hampering any, gainful employment. Though the law in India (NDPS Act) has provision for treatment of substance users, in lieu of sending them to jail, it is seldom fol-lowed in real life. In order to sustain substance use behavior, many users are forced to indulge in illegal activities like stealing, robbing and peddling drugs. Vandalism, rash driving, intoxicated behavior often brings them to court.

Such dire consequences of drug use make it impera-tive to develop strategies that will help in early identi-fication of substance users and treat them effectively to minimize the harmful consequences of substance use.

THE GRAND LADY OF JVT

Smt. Chandra Devi Khatri

She is just 97 years old Smt. Chandra Devi Khatri. We see her walking, mostly alone with her stick three times daily around our Central park with a permanent honest smile on her face and twin-kles in her eyes that makes most stern people to smile back.

She was born in a village of Haryana called Hasipur near Palam in a farmer family. In those days education to girl child war rarity but early mar-riage was not. Her husband joined Azad Hind Fauz of Subhas Chandra Bose. She is blessed with four daughters and two sons and now lives happily with her one son here in JVT to merrily participate in all events of our SeCiClub – JVT. We all try to make her life as happy as we can to receive her blessings.

PATANJALI YOG-SUTRA:

‘Sutra’ means Aphorism is a single line that contains in it the highly condensed words of great informa-tion. These words are then elaborated, interpreted and expanded by the learned ones in their treatises on ‘Yoga’ under many headings.

Sage Patanjali wrote his Sutras in four sections:

(1) Samadhi Pada: it contains 51-Sutras.

(2) Sadhna Pada: it contains 54-Sutras.

(3) Vibhuti Pada: it contains 56- Sutras.

(4) Kaivalya Pada: it contains 34-Sutras.

Thus a total of 195-sutras or Aphorisms are given by Patanjali. Out of these four Padas only Sadhna Pada advises about the physical process and mental train-ing to achieve the ultimate objective of Yoga which is Kaivalya through Samadhi. The Samadhi Pada in-cludes in it, in effect all other three Padas which are integrated; to form “Ashtanga Yoga” with its eight steps that are given below:

1. Yama.

2. Niyama.

3. Asanas.

4. Pranayam.

5. Pratyahara.

6. Dharana.

7. Dhyana.

8. Samadhi.

First four i.e, Yama, Niyama, Asana and Pranayams are called TAPAS, other two i.e. Pratyahar and Dha-rana are called Swadyaya and last two are called Pra-nidhana.

SIMPLE YOGASANAS:

Great sage Patanjali devised Asanas (comfortable sitting postures) for Pranayam and mainly for Medi-tation along with other parts of his Yogic Discipline. Commonly people call doing or practicing only of Asanas as doing Yoga. Yogasans were however devel-

oped to a fine technique to give very much enhanced physical advantages by subsequent Masters till date. Now to remain physically fit and feel full of vitality I am recommending only a few Simple Yogasans that will give to Seekers maximum benefits in general and a positive physical sense of well-being.

These methods to achieve Sense of Well-Being are of Uni-age, Uni-sex and Uni-faith. It means that any one over 15 years of age can become an aspirant & a Seeker to experience the Bliss. It is open to male or female, to a believer or non believer in God and there are no bars of any religions.

MORNING ROUTINE:

It is strongly advised that the Seeker must follow a set daily-routine. Now under your set daily routine, get up at a fixed time in the morning preferably at 06:00 hrs. For those people who work in night shift, this rule of getting up in the morning does not apply however in this manner.

After a short visit to toilet, drink a glass of water at room temperature, preferably add one table-spoon-ful of honey and squeeze one fresh lemon in this wa-ter before drinking.

Now you can sit with your cup of Tea or Coffee with 3-4 light biscuits to enjoy the glory of Nature. Con-nect yourself with birds & bees and greenery and Vib-gyor of the Creator. Thank Him and read the Prayer and Resolution written on the pages in this Book. And plunge into the beauty of most beautiful Nature in all seasons of the year.

In reality the final objective of human life is to be Healthy, Wealthy and Happy. In order to achieve this objective, this Part-ll of the Book is Practical Practice that is to be followed by a Seeker.

Now visit your toilet for your daily needs. Here I highly recommend one very important exercise while you are sitting on toilet seat (preferably a wastern style Komod). This Kriya is like a Nauli-kriya and can be performed before or after passing stool. This Kriya is like this:

“Suck your stomach inwards while forcefully exhal-ing breadth; now try and make a wave-like motion in

– PRAKASH BAJPAI

Page 33: Magazine Design & Layout

31A CLUB OF SENIOR CITIZENS

your stomach starting from top to coming down to bottom of your stomach. Repeat 10 times this wave motion while keeping your anus tightly contracted. You may have to exhale several times after inhaling though. Then reverse this wave motion that is now do it from bottom towards to the top, and repeat it 10 times as in the first case keeping anus tight now right to left, 10 times then from left to right, 10 times, keeping anus tightly contracted and exhaling several times as needed.”

Note: Saline water Anima may be take once in a weak to clear the stomach, if need be.

BENEFITS:

This Kriya, exercises everything in your stomach, in-testines and anus. It helps in avoiding Piles, gastric problems, indigestion and premature-ejaculation.

Now take a shower or a bath with water at pleasant temperature, not too hot or too cold, if possible. Af-ter drying yourself now to avoid cough & cold apply a smear of any antibiotic cold cream first on your lips and rub it 10 times, then a smear of cream, taking on your index finger, into both the nostrils, one by one. Wipe away excess cream with a towel.

Now you are ready for the Warming up exercises as explained here:

WARMING UP:

Now in your room, that is pleasantly illuminated and suitably ventilated according to season, stand bare-foot wearing only briefs, preferably in front of a mir-ror and start rubbing your entire body skin with dry palms of your hands vigorously, part by part of your body. This dry rubbing of body will produce static electricity and will nourish the so rubbed parts. Face and neck should be given special care. End this body rubbing process with hot compress of eyes. This is done by vigorously rubbing palm of hands together till they feel hot then keeping slightly cupped palms over your open eyes till palms cool down. Repeat this process 10 times.

BENEFITS:

This process gives a glow to your skin. Skin remains youthful and it very much delays wrinkles and sag-ging of muscles. Eyes thus treated will be luminous and healthy also formation of cataract is delayed and falling eye sight too is slowed down.

Next in warming up are under mentioned Free-hand Exercises:

(a) Rotate your both arms together first in Clockwise rotation for 10 times then in an Anti-clockwise rota-tion for 10 times.

(b) Now raise your hands in Tadasan (Palm tree), keeping both legs together straight, slowly bend for-ward from the waist keeping your legs straight and try touch the floor first with your fingers then after more practice with palms of your hands. Repeat it 10 times.

(c) Stand in ‘T’ position both arms fully stretched out perpendicular to torso and horizontal to the ground. Now from waist first twist yourself to left then to the right as much as you can. This is one round and repeat such 10 rounds.

(d) Now keep your both legs apart as much as com-fortable. Bend forward from waist and alternately touch your toe of left foot first by right hand and then right foot toe with your left hand. Repeat this touch-ing of toes 10 times.

(e) Last warming up exercise is: stand at attention, stretch your both hands in front of yourself with fin-gers closed in fists. Now rotate your wrists only, 10 times in clockwise and then 10 times in anti-clockwise oratations.

All these exercises will warm up your body parts and make them flexible to perform simple Yogic-Asans, as will be detailed now onwards:

EXERCISES FOR EYES, NECK & LEGS:

These are free-hand and free-time exercises that can be done by the seeker in his or her own free time. It takes only 15 minutes to complete these exercises if done in continuation. When these exercises are done in continuation, they give best results. These exercis-es can also be done in installments of 5 minutes each over long divided gaps of time, however.

(l) Exercises for Eyes: 5-minutes:

Sit down comfortably on a chair or a bench in your porch, balcony or in a room or in a garden or park in an upright position.

(a) Look straight into void. Now move your eye balls right upwards hold them there for 2 seconds and then bring them right downwards looking at your nose and hold again there for 2 seconds. This is one complete cycle and is done with open eyes. Repeat these cycles 10 times.

(b) Look straight into void. Keeping eyes open, turn eye balls to extreme left corner of the eyes and hold them there for 2 seconds and then turn them to ex-

Page 34: Magazine Design & Layout

ANNIVERSARY NUMBER 2ND OCTOBER 201532

treme right corner of the eyes and hold there for 2 seconds. This is one cycle. Repeat these cycles 10 times.

(c) Look straight into void. Keeping eyes open, rotate eye balls first in clockwise rotation of circles 10 times. Now do this rotation of eye balls in an Anti-clockwise rotation of circles 10 times. All these a, b and c exer-cises are for eyes and this set must be done in one sit-ting.

BENEFITS:

These very simple exercises remove all sorts of ‘fa-tigues’ of eyes, slow down degeneration of eye-tis-sues and improve brightness and vision of eyes; delay on set of cataract of eyes.

(ll) Exercises for Neck: 5-minutes:

While sitting down in an upright position as in exer-cises for Eyes, now follow the suggested regimen of exercises for Neck:

(a) Looking straight into the void, Keeping eyes open, raise your head straight upwards to sky throwing it as far back as you can and hold it there for 2 seconds. Now bring your head right down in front, pressing your chin hard against the throat-cavity and try to look at the chin, hold it there for 2 seconds. This completes one cycle of this exercise. Repeat it 10 times.

(b) Looking straight into void, Keeping eyes open & neck and head upright, turn your head to left side and twist it as far as you can. Hold your head in this posi-tion for 2 seconds. Now turn your head to right side and twist it as far as you can and hold your head in this position for 2 seconds. This is completes one cycle of this exercise. Repeat it 10 times.

(c) Sitting in upright position, lower your head forward and rotate your head by the help of neck, first from left to upwards then to right and to back to starting position. This is one round of this exercise. Repeat it 10 times. Now do this rotation starting from right side i.e. in reverse direction; repeating it 10 times. Thus complete all exercises for Neck.

BENEFITS:

These exercises help in avoiding ‘stiff and frozen’ neck problems. They also help in avoiding ‘spondilitis’ of upper spine or neck. They make movements of head supple and graceful, keeps thyroid glands in good working order. These exercises delay graying of hair & hair fall.

Exercises for Legs & Mind: 5-minutes:

While still sitting comfortably in an upright position, now begin two exercises for legs (or lower limbs) as described below:

(a) Stretch both the legs straight in front of yourself in a horizontal position. Both legs should be joined to-gether during the stretch and to be kept in that way. Now turn inwards your both feet together as much as you can while inhaling deeply; then stretch your both feet outwards as much a syou can at the same time exhale powerfully. This is one round of legs exercise. Repeat it 20 times/ (rounds).

(b) Keep sitting on your chair or bench in an upright position. It the chair or bench has a crossbar between two front legs below, then move your legs one after another in swinging motion and slowly bang your heels or back of ankles on cross-bar of the bench or chair at least 100 times each leg alternately. If there is no such bar fitted below in the bench or chair then; Swing both legs a 100 times alternately. This com-pletes exercise of legs.

(c) Still sitting in upright position but now close you both eyes and keep both the legs on crossbar if it is fitted in the bench or chair, if not, then keep your both legs firmly on the ground. Keep the palms of your hands on your knees and ‘focus’ your ‘mind’ in between the centre of your fore head. Think of ‘Su-preme Power’ of the Universe and Pray repeating the following Aphorism:

“ From Falsehood Lead me to the Truth;

From Darkness Lead me to the Light;

From Death Lead me to the Immortality”

— Amen.

BENEFITS:

These exercises of the limbs make limbs very supple. They are very beneficial to people with diabetes or people suffering from ‘Sciatica’. After completing these exercises, when one gets up to go that one will feel like rejuvenated and will wish to run disregarding of any age. The mind will be calm & revitalized.

Thus we come to complete a 15-minutes regimen of day’s exercises for Eyes, Legs & Mind. It is always bet-ter to do these exercises in a quite & open place pref-erably at any fixed time of the day.

33A CLUB OF SENIOR CITIZENS

OBITUARYShri Ganes Lal Chaturvedi’s personality had multiple dimensions. I as eldest son could view some of them as I grew up from a nursery kid to a retired person almost reaching 64 years of being in his close proximity.

He lived for almost ninety four and half years and most of it with good health and activities covering diverse areas. His jest for life can be seen from the fact that in his eighties he learnt use of computer and internet. He wrote his life history covering 92 years of his life, cover-ing in succinct details his childhood, early struggles after death of his father when he was just seven years of age, his contributions to Indian Railways which he joined as apprentice fireman and retired as Deputy Chief Me-chanical Engineer, his 18 eventful visits to USA. We used to call him “Bauji”. Bauji was very concerned about all seven of us and ensured that we all reached full poten-tial in our chosen professions. On losing our mother in May 1997, he did not go into seclusion as feared by us but bounced back to take more active role in organiz-ing Chaturvedi Samaj activities as President and later Patron of the Samaj.

What was the secret of his longevity? I think it was his intense desire to take interest in all family, social and political events of our time. He had his well conceived views about how the society should evolve while mini-mizing the ills of contemporary ere. He used to read the newspaper from cover to cover and used to follow discussions on current themes on television. He was very active on Facebook and using the immense potential of internet, delved into areas of his interest.

In his death we have lost a loving father, a social reformer and political thought leader. As his son, I pray for peace and tranquility to his soul. I feel in his death has achieved a bigger role surpassing all his physical limita-tions.

Manmohan Chaturvedi, son.
