WEIDEMANN MAGAZINE WEIDEMANN MAGAZINE02 03COVER EDITORIAL

Bernd Apfelbeck, Commercial Director Weidemann GmbH

The series launch of the innovative machine in March 2015 went extremely well for Weidemann. After a good half year, there is a wide acceptance and very keen interest among customers. In addition to the target groups usually served by Weidemann, such as agriculture, the equine industry, nurseries, local authorities and industry, the 1160 eHoftrac® will also be of particular interest to other sectors. For example, one of the first machines built was sold and delivered to the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark.

The 1160 eHoftrac® scores here above all with its emission-free electric drive concept, which benefits the animals, visitors and zoo employees. The significantly reduced noise emission is also another important advantage to be able to work during opening hours without disturbing the visitors.

Read the application report on pages 12 and 13 to learn what experiences the Copenhagen Zoo has had with the new machine.

The eHoftrac® is still accelerating! Many exciting things at Weidemann.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Since early April 2015, we have been supplying our 1160 eHoftrac® to our specialist dealers and their customers. The topic of the electrical drive system is now going into application and arriving at farms and businesses. In this magazine, read two exciting application reports about this innovative machine.

The 1160 eHoftrac® also received a great deal of attention by trade fair visitors and the trade press at the interna-tional spring trade fairs in 2015. And not only that, the eHoftrac® received multiple awards from the juries of the various innovation awards: Weidemann is very pleased about the special award from the jury at Equitana in Essen, the agra Innovation Award in Bulgaria and the demopark+demogolf Innovation Award in Eisenach. These awards show us that we have produced a product that can mean the advance into a new era.

In this magazine issue, we have researched many exciting application reports for you: the municipality of Wolfsburg re-lies on manoeuvrability with several 1280-series Hoftracs®. The Weidemann fleet of the agrarian society Bernterode (Thüringen) includes as many as three machines. With a mix of one 12-series Hoftrac® and two 30-series wheel loaders, the large animal population there is man-aged efficiently. The dairy farm Möller in East Hesse relies on our best seller, the telehandler T4512.

At Agritechnica 2015 in Hanover, Weidemann is showing many new developments and optimisations. The active dialogue with our customers always takes us further into the details of design and development. The continued im-plementation of new exhaust emission standards also still challenges the manufacturer greatly. Weidemann will pre-sent the newly revised LP models. You can read more about this on pages 10 and 11.

We hope you enjoy reading!

“The eHoftrac® – we have to show that”: that’s what Marc Friedrich (Land- und Gartentechnik Friedrich GmbH, Bad Lausick) thought to himself. Without further ado, he registered for the electromobility rally, Lipsia-e-motion 2015, in Leipzig.

From 5 to 7 June, electromobility fans from around Germany met in the major Saxon city at one of the largest city rallies created. At the stage points, there was plenty of time for exchange between participants and interested people as well as the possibility to perform test drives.

“But the eHoftrac® did not drive the whole route on its own axles,” says Marc Friedrich, “we took the opportunity to show how easy it can be loaded as well.

The 1160 eHofrac® is ultimately a working machine and not a long-haul vehicle.” And so the eHoftrac® was quite down-to-earth between all of the futuristic electric cars, electric scooters and electric bikes.

With a group of around 40 customers from dif ferent companies in agriculture and municipali-ties, the agricultural machine dealer Heeder Land-maschinen GmbH from the northern German town of Heede visited the Weidemann production plant in Korbach in June 2015. The Weidemann marketing director Christina Heine gave the visitors an insight into the history, the current product range and the current alignment of the company as a part of a company presentation. In the subsequent guided plant tour, the visitors were able to see for them-selves how the Weidemann machines are manu-

In spring 2015, our Italian national sales manager Fabio Paioro started a demo tour through the northern Italian regions of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. At various

farms, together with the local Weidemann dealers, he showed three dif ferent machines under real application conditions. A 1280, a 4080T and a T4512 were shown.

After the demonstration, the interested farmers and growers were able to test out the machines with feeding, mucking out, spreading hay in the stable as well as with other work that takes place on the farm. The result: thumbs up! The Italians were particularly impressed by the user friendliness of the operation, the comfort of the cabins and the lif t heights that were achieved.

In the end, the visitors were impressed by all three machines so that an entirely new problem arose: “When all of the machines from Weidemann work so well and so quickly, how can I decide on one of them?”

factured – from A, delivery of the components, to Z, supply of the finished machines to national and inter-national customers.

“I have now been to the production plant in Korbach several times. The drive has always been worth it and every time I see things that are new or that have been redesigned and optimised. It’s nice to see that Weidemann is always on the ball here and the pro-duction is a changing process,” says Stephan Engel, managing director of Heeder Landmaschinen GmbH.

At the sales launch in July 2010, the first Weidemann T4512 was delivered to a customer in Switzerland.

Always continuously developed and optimised, the machine quickly secured the place of the most-sold Weidemann model in Switzerland. Now the 400th Weidemann telehandler T4512 was sold and delivered there. Weidemann con-gratulates the Weidemann Centre in Switzerland on this success and thanks their customers for their confidence.

Christophe Perret is the new national sales manager in France. He grew up in agriculture and studied agronomy. After a few years at various companies, he joined the agricultural machine sales organisa-tion. He has been with Weidemann since October 2014 and is responsi-ble for the French Weidemann sales network. Since then, he has already acquired new dealers and managed important trade fairs, such as the Sommet de l’elevage and Sima. He is certain that the Weidemann brand can establish itself further in France with the interesting product range and especially the good Weidemann quality. In order to achieve this, Chris-tophe Perret will further expand the successful dealer network. Close contact to dealers and end custom-ers is particularly important to him. This means “answering questions, advising, training and demonstrating”, says Perret about the majority of his work as the National Sales Manager in France.

Tom van den KerchoveTom van den Kerchove has been managing the sales network in Belgium since December 2014 as the national sales manager. The 50-year-old enriches our team with his sales experience from Africa and the Middle East, where he worked for international compa-nies in heavy industry.

He is convinced of the variety of possibilities of the Weidemann brand and its products. For him, our machines are the answer to the needs of Weidemann customers in Belgium. Customers in Belgium in particular know to appreciate the finely tiered product range.

His goal is to solidify the confidence in Weidemann and to expand it further. In addition, it is important to him to meet the customers’ needs within the range of agricul-tural technology.

In April 2015, the Weidemann Centre in Switzerland sold a T5522 to Andermatt-Sedrun Sport AG. This company owns several mountain railways and ski lif ts. One of the most well-known is the Gemstock railway, which drives to over 2,900 metres above sea level.

A maximum of 5 tonnes can be sus-pended on the gondola that rides up this mountain, which is sufficient for the Weidemann T5522. The machine can therefore be quickly transported from the valley to dizzying heights for application on the Gemstock in order to take care of various tasks there.

New LP models.

Weidemann is presenting four new wheel loaders in the 4.6–6-tonne class. These are the successors of the previous series 3070 CX LP and 4070 CX LP. At Weidemann, LP stands for “low position”. The new models of the series 3080LP or 4080LP can each be supplied with an oscillating suspension unit or telescopic arm and were specially designed for medium to large agricultural operations and horse ranches. The 3080LP and the 3080LPT are outfitted with an engine of exhaust standard level IIIA as a standard. More powerful engines of the level IIIB are also available as an option. The available engines of the 4080LP and 4080LPT already meet the level IIIB.

1160 eHoftrac® and 1140 Basic Line.

A lot has changed on the successful 1160 eHoftrac®. Starting in March 2015, the machine was already in series production. New software was installed that signif icantly increases the performance efficiency.

Weidemann is receiving an ideal entry-level model with the 1140 “Basic Line”. The standard version of the 1140 was reduced by a few outfitting features, which allows for a signif icantly reduced price. Customers for whom a technically simplif ied machine suffices will appreciate this.

New options and attachments meet customer needs.

In addition, a whole range of new options will be presented at Agritechnica. So, for example, the cus-tomer can now also choose a cabin with the 1240 CX LP in addition to the operator’s canopy – extra comfort. If clearances of less than 2 metres are not necessary, a taller cabin can now be ordered for the T5522. This of fers an upgrade of clarity and improves the handling of the machine. The T4512 previously had 2 driving levels and drove at a maxi-mum speed of 20 km/h. By optimising the drive sys-tem, 28 km/h can now optionally be selected as a travel speed. This is particularly useful when longer distances need to be traversed. The Hoftracs® of the 11 and 12-series are outfitted with an operator’s canopy as a standard. In order to better protect the operator from wind and weather, an optional front and rear window is now available that can also be retrofitted for older models.

Like every year, Weidemann is also presenting a number of new attachments at this trade fair. New to the product range are now a hydraulically adjust-able pallet fork, a mulcher with a collecting tray, an optimised large bale fork, a material pusher, a feed clearer, a stump grinder and a dozer bucket.

Norla: with a 400 m² booth, Heeder Land-maschinen GmbH presented machines from Weidemann. Despite changing weather condi-tions and poor milk prices, many new contacts could be made and existing customers could be advised. Overall, the worst of the poor milk prices seem to have bottomed out and the Schleswig-Holstein farmers are looking for-ward to new investments in 2016.

agra takes place every two years on the Messe grounds in Leipzig and is one of the largest agri-cultural exhibitions in central Germany. The ex-hibition profile covers all aspects of agriculture. In addition to current topics, such as economic handling of resources and quality assurance, it is particularly important to exhibitors to also secure youth in agriculture. So in addition to a colourful and professional general programme, there were also a variety of hands-on activities.

demopark+demogolf is Europe’s largest open-air exhibition for municipal technology. In par-ticular, topics such as electrif ication, automation and digital networking were at the centre of dis-cussion. The new 1160 eHoftrac® of course hit the mark and was awarded with the gold inno-vation metal by the technical jury. In a separate demo area, we were able to show the eHoftrac® among others in action.

At the Tarmstedt Exhibition, the Weidemann factory dealer D. Mehrtens Maschinenbau GmbH was represented as an exhibitor. 13 Weidemann machines – from 1140 to 5080T –as well as over 30 dif ferent attachments were exhibited. Of course, the new development, the eHoftrac®, was in focus. With its tremendous tipping load in many areas, it is a very interest-ing alternative to the machine with a combustion engine and, due to the of f-road capability, it is also a f itting supplement within the range of the electric forklif t. Overall, the company Mehrtens was able to realise a consistently strong interest with 8 to 10 advising colleagues a day com-pared to previous years, and this even though the situation in agriculture, specif ically in milk production, is currently somewhat strained.

The agricultural, forestry and food trade fair in Libramont, Belgium is a well-established open-air exhibition. Under the motto “Nous sommes tous des enfants de la terre” (We are all children of the world), the exhibitors place particular value on sustainability. So the topics of recy-cling, terrain greening and renewable energies are also an integral element of the event. On a central demo area, the exhibitors showed their latest machines in action and the Weidemann eHoftrac® was there.

SPACE is the largest agricultural trade fair in northern France and places particular value on sustainability. The ever-growing trade fair is one of the first trade fairs that were supervised by our new national sales manager, Christophe Perret.

Trade fairs in Germany and international trade fairs, summer months of 2015.Without a doubt, Agritechnica is the supreme discipline within the range of agricultural trade fairs and exhibitions. But not everyone undertakes the long journey to Hanover and so many regional trade fairs still have a very high priority. The company Weidemann and its distributors are represented on site regularly for all customers.

The first series machine that was pro-duced by the electric 1160 eHoftrac® in the Weidemann production plant in Korbach has begun a long journey to Denmark. The zoo in Copenhagen has been a Weidemann customer for years and immediately chose this machine after the presentation of this innovative machine. The advantages of the eHoftrac® for a zoo are obvious: emis-sion-free work in the animal houses or outdoor enclosures is a tremendous improvement to the living conditions of the valuable and sometimes rare ani-mals. No exhaust fumes, no engine noise – the zoo staf f can work around the animals without disturbing them.

The 1160 eHoftrac® among the big animals.Elephants, tigers and more at the Copenhagen Zoo.

The working conditions for the employ-ees of course also improve a great deal with this machine.

Allan Oliver, who works in the elephant house with the eHoftrac®, is excited about the electric drive concept. “The machine has a great driving behaviour, it is dynamic and powerful and abso-lutely ideal for all of our tasks. The daily routine at the zoo begins at 7.00 a.m. and the visitors arrive from 10.00 a.m. We usually try to take care of as much work as possible during this time. But with the quiet and emission-free eHoftrac®, we can work just f ine during operating hours without disturbing our

guests. It is an advantage that did not ex-ist beforehand with the diesel machine.”

There is an eHoftrac® charging station in the elephant house. From here, it is used daily in the animal houses and outdoor enclosures for feeding work, clearing droppings as well as loading and cleaning work. The elephants al-ways spend the night indoors. So that the animals can lay down at night when sleeping, the eHoftrac® scoops large piles of sand every day. The sandy floor is loosened up with a harrow to better release the moisture. With its 1.3 tonne tipping load, the machine can also eas-ily transport and lif t the heavy square hay bales. Loading and stacking work are also possible up to a total working height of 3.44 metres.

Robert Kjaergaard from Stemas Maskinsalg A/S sees good potential for the eHoftrac® in Denmark: “We have done demo tours with the new eHoftrac® in our sales area, which have shown us that, in addition to the traditional agricultural and equine in dustries, this drive concept is also of great interest to the sectors of industry, nurseries and above all amusement parks with visitor traf f ic. The machine started out very well with us and our expectations are correspondingly very high.”

Under the motto “Test drivers wanted”, the journal “Pferdebetrieb” (Equestrian Business) raf f led off an eHoftrac® for a temporary period. On the Koller farm in the Bavarian Upper Palatinate, the Weidemann 1160 eHoftrac® had to then show what it could do amongst horses and holiday guests.

“For me, the Weidemann is a top ma-chine,” says Günter Koller, who has al-ready been using Weidemann machines on his farm for a good 15 years. For him, service, reliability and the availability of the machine are particularly important criteria. And so it was a matter of course for the experienced Hoftrac® operator to put the electric Hoftrac® through its paces. “We used it right away on the first weekend to handle straw with large square bales. The power was absolutely sufficient for this purpose, but the bat-tery was dead after almost four hours of non-stop work,” says the master of agri-culture and the equine industry.

On the other days, one battery charge was sufficient to easily take care of the necessary work on the farmland with around 120 horses. During this time, the

eHoftrac® took care of the tasks of the farm’s own 1370: mucking out and spreading hay in the stalls and pens, moving bales and sweeping the farm. Günter Koller was only not able to try out the snow plough in August unfortu-nately.

“I found it took some time to get used to the hydraulics responding so quickly,” says Günter Koller, “but that is likely because I am so used to the diesel-powered machines over the years.” In addition, the horse expert f inds many

words of praise for the eHoftrac®: in this way, he can also hear what the horses are doing while he is working and react quickly. He can already work early in the morning or at lunchtime without disturb-ing his holiday guests and visitors. “Nor-mally I start working with the machines after 9.00 a.m. After all, our holiday guests are here on vacation and also want to sleep in,” says Günter Koller. He can use the eHoftrac®, on the other hand, any time without disturbing anyone.

Günter Koller especially praises the tip-ping load in technical operation, which was signif icantly increased compared to the diesel-powered 1160. In addition, the stability of such a small and compact machine surprised him in a positive way.

Ultimately Günter Koller says: “For our business with such a large number of animals, the 1160 eHoftrac® is a little too small. In general, however, I believe that the electric drive system can be counted on in the agricultural and equine industry.”

Test drivers for the eHoftrac® wanted – and found.Günter Koller is very pleased with the quiet eHoftrac® in the holiday business.

“For me, the eHoftrac® is an interesting machine, because I

do not disturb my holiday guests with loud machine noise.”

Günter Koller Owner and head of the Koller farm

The Koller farm. There are around 120 horses and ponies on the Koller farm. 80 of them belong to the Koller family and regularly go to riding lessons or in front of a carriage. The family business in the Upper Palatinate also runs a successful horse breeding business, a restaurant, 35 holiday flats (a total of 120 beds) and a farm with around 50 hectares of grassland and 60 hec-tares of arable land. The entire business is run by a total of 20 employees, seasonal temporary workers and the Koller family. For about ten years, the business has made massive invest-ments in technical upgrades.

The sweepstakes:

the journal “Pferdebetrieb” (Equestrian Busi-ness) carried out a sweepstakes at Equitana under the motto “Test driver wanted”. Among other things, the participants could win the use of an eHoftrac®. The journal “Pferdebe-trieb” (Equestrian Business) is primarily aimed at larger professional equestrian facilities with independent reports and research as well as a wide circulation of around 5,700 copies.

The machine with the “permanent grin function”! The telehandler T4512 in application on the Möller dairy farm.

At the Möller family business in Röhrda in eastern Hesse, 80 dairy cows, 30 young animals and a Lim-ousin suckler cowherd with 30 animals is completely taken care of. As a second pillar alongside the dairy industry, the Möllers have built up a mast livestock breeding in recent years. For this purpose, the pro-cess of embryo transfer is used, which means the HF dairy cows are bred with embryos from the Limousin breed. 200 hectares are currently being cultivated on the farm, of which 120 hectares is cultivated with rape-seed, barley, wheat and corn and about 80 hectares is grassland.

An articulated Weidemann Hoftrac® was the faithful companion over the years for the operation. After a couple of years, the machine had to then be replaced. In autumn 2014, the Möllers had their first telehandler with the T4512. Existing attachments, such as dung forks and buckets in two sizes, can advantageously still be used. Newly added were a pushing blade and a fork & grab to be able to easily manage the variety of work tasks. Torsten Möller purchased the new machine purely

out of advice – for him a new experience and a move away from the articulated steering to the telehandler. The Weidemann regional manager Alfred Feit was on site in Waldkappel with Heiko Hesse from JansonAgricultural Technology. They all discussed with each other together what the machine had done so far on the farm and what the machine was meant to do in the future. And so the telehandler T4512 arrived.

“It was quick and clear and we were very well-advised by our dealer. When we had it delivered, the neigh-bouring farmers or people from the municipality asked us astonished what we were doing with such a small machine for our operation. In order to do away with the prejudice, we showed them everything that this tele-handler can do – after which the prejudice turned into, ‘Unbelievable, that’s great’. They were simply amazed that such a compact machine can render such a per-

formance. The T4512 fits perfectly for our business size,” says Torsten Möller about his new acqui-

sition, which will complete between 400 and 500 hours of operation per year.

In addition to supplying the animals with silo feed, pushing feed, loading grain, moving round bales and mucking out the young animal stalls, the machine is used for many different activities at two busi-ness locations. “It is incredible how versa-tile it is in application – many jobs are first evident once the telehandler is on the farm”, says Tanja Möller, who is also on the go with the T4512 daily. In addition, the Möllers also like that the different helpers can work with the operator-friend-ly machine quickly and easily. The high level of stability and the driver assistance system VLS make the telehandler easily deployable at any time for an expanded group of users.

“It is a great deal of fun to work with it – for me the machine has a built-in permanent grin function!”

Flexible application, quick response times and clean work: these are im-portant aspects when working in the “GREEN” business division of the city of Wolfsburg. But this could not be sufficiently lived with the existing machinery. So in 2013 the decision was made to acquire three Weidemann 1280s. These machines were distributed to the areas of west, east and the north cemetery.

“ G R E E N ” B U S I N E S S D I V I S I O N , West region:In west Wolfsburg, Frank Wagner is responsible for 45 employees and an extensive fleet. This also includes a Weidemann 1280. Frank Wagner already knows the Weidemann brand. As a horse owner, he lends the 1280 to his nephew often enough and so he was delighted when he received the approval for a Hoftrac® from the parks department. The Weidemann is mainly used for loading work: loading stone chippings in the winter; wood, branches, green waste and leaves in the summer and autumn. “For its size, the Weidemann is pretty powerful, which is why we sometimes overload it a little bit,” says Frank Wagner. For larger applications, the machine is sometimes also transported on a trailer to the site of application.

“ G R E E N ” B U S I N E S S D I V I S I O N , cemetery operation:On the 28-hectare north cemetery in Wolfsburg, one of 23 city cemeteries, the Weidemann 1280 is in application on a daily basis. In addition to maintaining green spaces, working on tree graves and transports for paving work, the Weidemann is also used for training. The training of young cemetery gardeners and workers in gardening is a major concern for the head of cemetery operations, Bernd Werthmann. And so 6 trainees receive their practical training at the northern cemetery. In order to make the training as varied as possible, the budding cemetery gardeners are also allowed to participate in competitions. “This is unusual for a municipal operation,” explains Bernd Werthmann. The Wolfsburg natives are quite successful: for example, a trainee this year qualified for the German Championships of Cemetery Gardeners thanks to his very good performance in training. Not least thanks to the good preparation in the business, where the trainees are also allowed to drive the 1280 from Weidemann. Unlike the depots for green space maintenance, the cemetery in Wolfsburg is funded by fee receipts and therefore has to be particularly economical. There is autonomous management and financial resources. So it was Bernd Werthmann who was the first to want a cemetery loader for the required work.

“ G R E E N ” B U S I N E S S D I V I S I O N , East region:At the east depot in Wolfsburg, Uwe Teichmann is responsible for the neat and clean cityscape with his roughly 45-person team. This includes, among other things, the park surrounding the Allersee local recreation area. Since the depot is located in close proximity to the park, the Weidemann 1280 is often in application here. “At many points, we would not manage at all with a large wheel loader or tractor,” explains the deputy divisional manager Andreas Schäfer, “the branches of trees, for example, are often hanging too low.” In addition, the Weidemann is used when wood trunk benches and rubbish bins that are provided with a foundation are set up or replaced. “Previously we had to dig out the foundations by hand, but to-day we have a Weidemann,” says Marcel Reischke, one of the operators. Otherwise the Hoftrac® is used with various loading and transport work in the building yard and in soil storage. “Especially in the soil storage, where we only have limited stor-age capacity, the Hoftrac® helps us a great deal,” says Andreas Schäfer, because the lorries simply dump their load off. Pushing it together, heaping and stacking must then be done by the nimble loader. “We are happy to have it,” confirms the maintenance division head Uwe Teichmann.

“The Hoftrac® 1240 LP is not only practical in application

thanks to its low design, but it is also very stable.”

Stefan Springsguth Managing director

Agrargesellschaft mbH Bernterode

In early 2014, Stefan Springsguth took over the management of Agrargesellschaft mbH Bernterode. The previous LPG was specialised in the fattening of pigs and cattle. The machinery had gotten into its later years just like the building stock. “First, I almost replaced the machinery entirely,” explains Stefan Springsguth, who also works as a sales advisor for a major tractor manufacturer. And so three Weidemann machines soon came to the farm. Feeding with the 1240, mucking out with the 3070 and loading and stacking work with the 3070T – each one had its area of expertise.

After a year as the managing director, the ambitious young farmer could then pay off the last five shareholders. “We are now gradually rehabilitating the building now,” he explains. Sometimes these have to be completely gutted, in other places a bucket of paint suffices.

The pigsties in Bernterode are open. The pigs are mostly in columns and are fed through feeding stalls in the corridor. Filling these feeding stalls is done by the Weidemann 1240 LP. Since the ceiling height is very low, there was not a lot of play when choosing the right machine. “The Hoftrac® 1240 LP is just the right thing

for us,” says Stefan Springsguth, “due to the low design, it is not only practical for application in the stable, but is also very stable and comfortable to get into.”

As a special feature, the agrarian society of fers private individuals the opportunity to choose a pig. The selected pig is la-belled and placed in a stable with deep straw. Here it is fattened entirely accord-ing to the wishes of the new owner.

Once it has reached the desired weight or the right time has come, this pig is slaughtered according to the customer’s requirements. In the meantime, the cus-tomer can always come by and visit his or her pig. Thanks to the open stables, there is no increased danger here from additional germs.

In addition to the fattened pigs, the agrarian society also has five suckler cowherds with a total of around 350 animals. These are also provided for in the stables in the winter.

Outside of the approximately 4.5 hec-tares of farmstead, the machines are also used on the roughly 300 hectares of cultivated grassland and arable land

as well as in contracting operation. Stefan Springsguth works here together with a fellow contractor.

For the future, the trained farmer wants more updates. For example, there should be tower silos for the feed storage and a photovoltaic system on all building roofs.

How does the eHoftrac® get to the Weidemann customers? We sent the eHoftrac® on a road tour and visited many operations. The response is very good. The eHoftrac® received especially good attention at operations in the animal and food industry. The topic of environmental protection is very important nowadays.
