MAGIC BUZZ Your quarterly update from the Magic Bus India Foundation

Hello!

For a long time, almost everyone we know have

been telling us, how come we don’t know all the

variety of work Magic Bus does? To that I bring

to you our first newsletter for our donors and

supporters.

This has been a particularly momentous period

in Magic Bus' life. With a vision of reaching a

million children by 2015, we have revisited our

vision and mission statements. We have re-

looked at the visual language we speak in. For

the first time, we have a tagline that captures

our goal: Taking a million from childhood to live-

lihood.

For 12 years now, Magic Bus has brought about

changes that are revolutionary in the lives of

the children we have worked with. After a dec-

ade of this work, the impact is for all to see—

enhanced educational attainments, better

health, and children who are aware of the choic-

es they have and using the opportunities in the

environment.

Nearly half of the children and young adults who

are part of Magic Bus are girls, resulting in tec-

tonic shifts in the way their families and com-

munities are viewing and treating them.

The newsletter will bring you glimpses from the

work we are doing. Work that would not have

been possible without your support and

belief in us.

It will be good to hear back from you.

Write to Rishi at [email protected]

to tell us what you think and let us know

how we can better this newsletter.

ABOUT US Magic Bus’ philosophy revolves around the

concept of mentoring. We foster young adults

to deliver our programme and to become role

models to the children with whom we work.

These community leaders are from the same

community as the children and serve as

agents of change.

We train these mentors to deliver the re-

searched, activity-based curricula we have

pioneered to bring about behavior change. A

large part of their work is to promote gender

equality, access to education and health ser-

vices, as well as developing a child's social

and emotional skills. All graduates of the Mag-

ic Bus programme are offered our employ-

ment course and connections to livelihoods.

INTRODUCING MAGIC BUS IN HOUSTON On March 31, 2012, at the Hilton Westchase,

a launch reception was hosted by Amit and

Arpita Bhandari to introduce Magic Bus USA to

Houston. More than 130 people attended.

The keynote speakers were Founder-CEO Mat-

thew Spacie and Parvati Pujari, a 22 year-old

graduate completing a Bachelor's in Com-

merce from the University of Mumbai.

Parvati is one of our unique fundraisers, shar-

ing her personal story of struggle and her

triumphs with supporters to inspire them to

be part of Magic Bus. “Magic Bus makes it

possible for people to climb out of poverty, by

showing them that opportunities exist, even if

we live in areas the rest of the world looks

down upon as a slum,” she said.

Parvati’s personal testimony helped raise

more than $50000 at the event. The event

was also featured in the media.

Benefit Dinner in new york Magic Bus held its launch event in New York City, on April 3, 2012, at the Ju-

noon restaurant in Manhattan. A capacity crowd of more than 125 guests,

listened as Matthew Spacie and Parvati Pujari shared their experiences with

and took part in an auction of fine items ranging from autographed sports

items to luxurious hotel suite packages across the world.

Sponsors for the event were Junoon and the Taj Group, with Sahara One as a

media sponsor. Sahara One will air a half-hour segment across the US and UK

covering the event, complete with interviews with the Magic Bus team. An en-

ergized committee looks forward to another event in the NYC area soon.

Magic Bus at the ‘2012 is great’ event at british high commission, india 200 children from Magic Bus Delhi/NCR programme participated in a mini Olym-

pics event held at the British High Commission in New Delhi on April 17. Themed

as ‘2012 is Great’ (Britain), the event had an oath-taking ceremony, followed

by a display of formation representative of an opening ceremony, eventually

leading into actual games.

The children showed a great balance of agility, team spirit and respect for the

Games as they played various games generally used in Magic Bus sessions.

The audience comprising of media and British High Commission inmates thor-

oughly enjoyed the games, especially the King of the Ring and Sound Circle.

Gulafsha wins online contest 15 year old Gulafsha Ansari, who joined

the Magic Bus programme at the age of 9,

is flying to London for the Olympics

Games 2012 to be held there in less than

3 months from now.

She won the Choose to Matter contest

organized by Julie Foudy Sports Leader-

ship Academy to become one of the four

Youth Ambassadors who will be present

at the games as McDonald’s Champions of Play for a week, meet the athletes and

even go for sightseeing in London.

This has come after a grueling fortnight

of elaborate online campaigning, when

entire Magic Bus universe—teams from

India, UK, Germany and USA, and support-

ers from every corner of the world—came

together to vote for Gulafsha and her

project, which aimed at creating avenues

for girls to come out and play.

Gulafsha, a star performer at Magic Bus,

and one of the girls who attended a spe-

cial soccer training with Julie Foudy in

USA last year, led the closest competition

with more than 1000 votes.

Read a Mid-Day article featuring Gulafsha and her London dreams.

Magic Bus and Julie Foudy Sports Leader-

ship Academy (JFSLA) launched another

campaign to send 10 more girls for an

international football training with Julie

Foudy this summer season.

Cycling4change 4 cycling enthusiasts—Ranjul Goswami, Anil Uchil, Bertram Fonseca and Mallikarjun

Singh, supported by Rohan Jathanna—took over a monumental journey (pun intended)

from the Gateway of India in Mumbai to the India Gate in Delhi on their bicycles.

The ‘4 cyclists, 4 states, 4 change’ Cycling4Change campaign, which had these four men

from different walks of life—ranging from banking and finance to communication and

adventure sports—come together for a 1940 kilometres ride across Indian states of

Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and finally Delhi/NCR.

The cyclists started their journey following a ceremonious flag-off in Mumbai, rode for a

grueling 21 days amidst ranges of weathers, people and cultures, and were received in a

mega event held at India Gate. During the journey, they told interesting tales of their

interactions through the Cycling4Change blog, and shared enthusiastically about the

work of the two organisations they were cycling for—Magic Bus and CanKids.

We are delighted to have such sporting enthusiasts come forward to support a cause.

Photos for flag-off and reception ceremonies, and more.

Kick for change The well-received campaign to form ‘the largest football team in the world’ converted the

entire city of Mumbai, Maharashtra into a virtual playground to help more than 17,000

children from the streets move towards a better life. Log on to the Kick For Change web-

site and kick the ball to cover 83,000 metres from Colaba to Virar.
