Light Eight 1 PotentialThe light of a new year as it dawns happens so subtly one’s body often becomes restless without the mind understanding why. This early marker for rising energy is perhaps one of the most important in the wheel of the year simply because unharnessed energy can quickly become uncontrollable chaos. But oh the potential! Take a close look at that word: Inside potential exists all which is potent, from the Latin potentia, meaning power.

Light Eight 2 SpringIt is easy to allow our hearts to rush forward in anticipation of spring’s arrival. We watch as the landscape begins to wake. We want. Oh how we want! Light Eight 5 EssentialOur labors in life produce more life. Just as wheat is essential, so are our efforts in growing and harvesting. There is not one thing on this entire earth which exists alone. Each is dependent upon the other. From the Latin essentia, meaning essence, every single human, crea-ture, stone, plant, grain of wheat, possesses an intrinsic nature which is indispensable—each is essential.

Light Eight 8 WinterInto darkness we plunge as winter draws itself over us. Save for the occasional coo from a night owl or the distant cries from a small pack of coyotes, winter’s beauty lies at the heart of a deep stillness in the landscape. We move in close to one another for warmth and reassur-ance. Then soon we reach the apex of a dying year in a single night as it lengthens past all other nights of the year—the Solstice. In our deepest hush we are given pause to reflect.

Light Eight 6 FallFor a perfect moment there is balance. We know it when we feel it—that ideal instant. We experience it every fall during the Equinox when, for just a moment in a long year, the day and night are equal in length. How like the earth we are in our revolutions around a central core seeking balance. We do come back to it, revel in it, and find beau-ty in the dance.
