GENERALRULESANDREGULATIONS

Thecompetitionisopentoallartistswhousewoodastheirprimarymaterial.

Tobeeligible,carvingsmustbecompletedwithintheprevioustwelvemonths.

InCategoriesA,B,CandD,competitorsentertheirworkbygroupandlevel.CategoriesEandF(woodturning,marquetry,intarsiaandmosaic)aresinglelevelonly.

Competitorsmayenteruptofourpiecesoftheirownworkpercategory.Thereare27categories.

Thepreferredmethodofcompetitionentryisonline,atwww.ontariowoodcarvers.ca

Competitorsmaketheirownchoicesastothelevelandcategoryinwhichtheyenter.However,theCompetitionandShowCommitteereservestherighttomakethefollowingdecisions:

• Transferanyentryfromonecategorytoanother

• Combinetwoormorecategoriesifthenumberofentriesineachisinsufficienttoprovidereasonablecompetition

• Moveanyentryfromoneleveltoanother.

OWCAalsoreservestherighttoacceptorrejectanyentryandtodisplayonlythosethatareofacceptablequalityorthatexhibitspacepermits.

Materialsotherthanwoodmaybeused,providedthatanysuchmaterial,intheopinionofthejudges,isappropriateandusedinasubsidiarymanner.

CarvingscreatedwiththeuseofaCNCmachinearenoteligibleforthecompetition.

Artistsmustprovideanybasesordisplaystandsneededbytheirentries.

Morethanonesubjectonasinglebaseorstandwillbeconsideredoneentry.

Whileeveryreasonableprecautionwillbetakentoensurethesafetyofallcompetitionentries,artistsarerequiredtodirectlyassumeallrisksresultingfromlossordamage.Shouldanyarticlebeaccidentallydamaged,lostorstolen,OWCAwillrenderallpossibleassistancefortherecoveryoftheitem,butwillnotrecognizeanyclaimforpaymentofthevalueoranyportionthereof.

Therightstointerpret,alter,amend,cancelorgrantrelaxationfromanyoftheserulesinindividualcasesisattheabsolutediscretionoftheCompetitionandShowCommittee.Ifanyquestionsarisenotprovidedforintheserulesandregulations,thedecisionoftheCompetitionandShowCommitteewillbefinal.

COMPETITIONLEVELS

ThereisnoMasterslevel.ThetitleOntarioWoodCarvingChampionwillgotothebestwoodcarvingselectedfromGeneralandBirdcategories.

Anewawardisadded,theBestOtherWoodworkingArtisselectedfromMarquetry,Intarsia,Mosaic,Pyrography&Woodturningcategories.

Openlevelisforartistswhofeeltheirworkcancompeteatthislevel.Anartistwhoseworkisadvancedmayalsoberequiredtocompeteatthislevel,eveniftheyhavenevercompetedpreviously.

Artistsareautomaticallyadvancedtothislevelwhen,atanypreviousOWCACompetition,theyhavewon:

• OneIntermediate‘BestofLevel’OR• Atotaloffivefirstplaceribbonsatthe

Intermediatelevel.

Intermediatelevelisforartistswhohavewon

• OneNovice‘BestofLevel’OR• AtotaloffivefirstplaceribbonsattheNovice

level.

Novicelevelisopentoanyartistwhohasnotwonenoughribbonstoadvancetothenextlevel.

Youthlevelisforyoungartistsbetweentheagesof13and18,inclusive.Thereisnocategorysegregationforthislevel.

JuniorlevelisforyoungartistsGrade8oryounger.Thereisnocategorysegregationforthislevel.

JUDGINGCRITERIA

Tobejudgedseparately,acategoryshouldhaveaminimumoffiveentries.Categorieswithfewerthanfiveentriesmaybecombinedwithanothercomparablecategory.

Anysignatureand/oridentificationonthecarvingmustbecoveredwithtapeorlabelpriortojudging.

Judges’decisionsarefinal.

Judgingwillbebasedon:• Artistry,originality,creativity• Degreeofcomplexity• Executionskill• Accuracy(includingpainting)• Lifelikepresence,ifapplicable• Perspective,ifapplicable

BestofLeveljudging:

BestofLevelwillbejudgedbasedonallcategories’first,secondandthirdplacewinnerswithinthelevel.

REGISTRATION

Entrieswillbeacceptedatthecompetitionandshowatthetimesindicatedinthe“inperson”registrationabove.

Entriesmaybebroughtinbyapersonotherthantheartist,providedtheartistfilledinandsignedtheentryform,orenteredonline.Volunteerswillassistwithregistration.

Uponregistration,aclaimticketwillbeissuedandmustberetainedinordertoclaimtheentryaftertheshow.

Entriesmustremainondisplayforthedurationoftheshowandmustnotberemoveduntil4pmOctober20,2018.Pickupisbetween4and4:30pm.Containerswillnotbestoredattheshow.

Pleaseensurethatallribbonsandawardsarepickedupwiththecarving.PrizesthatareunclaimedaftertheendoftheshowwillbeconsideredadonationtoOWCA.

JuniorandYouthlevelentriesarefreeofcharge.

Novice,Intermediate,OpenLevels:Firstentryis$10,(OWCAmembers$8)Additionalentriesare$5each.
