There is some discussion as to whether or not these seven men are deacons. ◦ However, the word a form of the word “deacon” occurs

twice in this text: “distribution” (v 1) and “serve tables” (v 2).

There were more than 5,000 men who were Christians (Acts 4:4).

“Hellenists” referred to Greek-speaking people.

Daily distribution was given to the poor from what was given to the apostles. ◦ The early Christians “sold their possessions and goods,

and divided them among all, as anyone had need” (Acts 2:45).

◦ Acts 4:34-35.

The apostles knew the importance of setting proper priorities.

Preaching had to be the apostles’ first priority. ◦ “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the

power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Rom 1:16).

The church was to choose for themselves seven men for “this business.”

The men who served in this role had three qualifications: they were to be men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit, and full of wisdom.

The apostles would devote themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word. ◦ Devoted to prayer.

Jesus spent much time in prayer.

The night before He called His disciples (Lk 6:12).

When He was transfigured (Lk 9:28-29).

If Jesus recognized the importance of prayer, we need ot pray!

◦ Ministry of the word.

Acts 1:8.

They were determined to fulfill their obligations before God.

The seven all had Greek names!

The apostles prayed and laid their hands on these men. ◦ The apostles proved their dedication to prayer.

◦ The apostles laid hands on the Seven.

Often appointing someone to office (Acts 13:3).

The miraculous gift of the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands (Acts 8:18).

Stephen (Acts 6:8) and Philip (Acts 8:6-7) both performed miracles.

Therefore, this might be the bestowal of the miraculous gift of the Spirit.
