In this our fist ever flag football season the high flying Eagles have soared to a perfect 6-0 league record and
will enter the playoffs as the number one seed. They have proven time and again that they are the team to beat
in the WLACSL. Their potent offense is averaging over 30 points per game and the stingy defense is giving up
less than 7 points per game. Their most recent victory came against the rival MSA 6 Tigers in which our Ea-
gles kept their winning streak alive with a come from behind 20-18 victory. There is no doubt that the Eagles
are on track to winning their first ever Football Championship, but first they have to
get by the Larchmont Charter School Green Monsters in the first round playoff
game on Friday November 12th. We will be hosting this first round game from 4
p.m. - 5 p.m. here at MSA 4.
We ask that you please allow your students to stay and support the team in this cru-
cial game, and we also ask that you join us in supporting our student-athletes in
their quest for success in this playoff game and also next week Friday November
19th in the potential championship game.
Flag Football Season - Mr. Trejo

Lego Robotics Competition - Mr. Deniz
On October 30th, 2010, my teacher Mr. Deniz, my teammates Ted Lopez,
Jesse Valore, Uriel Payan, and I went to Magnolia Science Academy - Re-
seda (MSA 1) to compete in our very first Lego Robotics Competition.
When we got to MSA 1 we went into the gymnasium, where the competi-
tion was being held, we saw about 15 other teams in there.
About half an hour later, the 1st robotics round started and our robot made
really smart moves and was able to get 135 points which was one of the best
scores among 16 teams. After that it was time for lunch and we had pizza
and juice.
Then we had to check our robot to make sure that it was able to do the 2st robotics round. We checked it be-
cause whenever the robot does something correctly on the course we get points for it and if we get enough
points we might end up winning in first place and that would make our school (MSA 4) popular. We got 130
points which was still enough for us to get a good ranking.
For the final robotics round we really needed to check our robot design because since this is the last round we
need to get all the points we can in order to get 1st place and win. And finally the time came for the last round
and when we went up there we knew that we were going to win but, unfortunately our robot crashed at the last
second and we didn’t get as many points as we expected. The final rankings showed that we were the 3rd best
robotics team among all 16 Magnolia Schools.

Many of you may not know this, but November is National
Novel Writing Month. It all started in 1999, and has grown from
there. It started out as an activity for “grown-up” writers, but has
since opened up to writers of all ages.
Basically, each 7th grade student will be writing their own novel
during the month of November; it is due by midnight on Novem-
ber 30th. Adults that participate in Nano Wrimo have a goal of
50,000 words, but students set their own goal based on age/grade.
The 7th graders each set their own goal ranging from 2,000 to
10,000 words.
The 7th grade class started preparing for Nano Wrimo long before the month of November started. They
started working on their Nano workbooks in October to develop awesome characters, come up with a plot, and
figure out what their antagonist’s “beef” with their protagonist is.
7th grade started out Nano Wrimo with a kickoff party on October 29th. Patrick Cain, a writer for ESPN and
various financial magazines, spoke to the class about the importance of writing in our society, and also about
which Lakers and Dodgers he’s met!
Nano Wrimo is a lot of work, but so far it has also been a lot of fun. Stay tuned for “Script Frenzy” in April
for 9th grade!

All MSA-4 7th grade students (USC) were re-
quired to construct a model of a plant or animal
cell. All models were made out of materials that
will not spoil. Here are some of the products of
their hard work.

It was amazing to see how many people participated in our very 1st Pep
Rally on September 30, 2010. A plethora of us wore our class colors and
showed our school spirit. The skateboard/plunger game was fun to watch. I
was chosen to represent my class, CSUN. Even though I did not win, it was
still fun to watch everyone participate. MSA-4 Football and Volleyball
Teams were also introduced. This gave us a chance to get excited about the
game.
“The following day, October 1st, was the day of our first Football and Volleyball game. We had a Jersey Day
to show our support of our classmates and show our school spirit."

National Safe Schools Week
On October 22, 2010, Magnolia Science Academy-4 participated in their
first National Safe School Week. We had an inspirational speaker from
Women Against Gun Violence share his life story and gave our students
advice about making the right choices in life. It was truly an engaging, eye-
opening, and emotional presentation.
"I think it was good that he talked about his personal life. I could sort of relate to his life because I live around
a neighborhood full of mobbers, taggers, and gangbangers. It is not a good environment."
~Rene Ortiz, 8th CSUN
Breast Cancer Awareness - Ms. Daco
"On October 22, 2010, we did our 1st Annual Breast Cancer Awareness
Event. We collected Yoplait yogurt lids to participate in the "Save Lids to
Save Lives" program. For every yogurt lid that we collected, Yoplait will
donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We collected over 400
lids and we are still continuing to collect more! To further bring aware-
ness and support to Breast Cancer Awareness, students wore pink shirts.
At the end, USC won because they brought the most lids and almost every-
one in their class wore pink shirts."

Welcome to second quarter Spanish! Students are coming along in both writ-
ten and spoken Spanish, and will continue to develop their skills as we move
onto more complex language concepts.
Our middle school beginning Spanish students can now talk about the weather,
greet each other, tell time, and understand basic classroom commands –a very
important skill, since we will be shifting more and more to a Spanish-conducted class. Recently students en-
joyed a very lively game of charades where they demonstrated their new vocabulary. In the next few weeks
students will write and speak about friends and family. Bravo 6-8th grade!
Ninth graders are also rapidly coming along in their acquisition of basic Span-
ish. Highlights from class include a short skit involving two famous people
and short autobiographies written totally in Spanish by students themselves.
Ninth grade students have also improved considerably in pronunciation, which
we will continue to work on as we move forth. In the near future the ninth
grade class will do a poster project on health, reinforcing information from
health class. Bravo 9th grade!
Students who speak Spanish in their home have taken on a leadership role in helping new Spanish speakers
learn the language. These students have also been challenged to write more extensively on a variety of topics
in the Spanish langugage.
All students have begun to learn about people and cultures from around the Spanish-speaking world, and will
continue to do so as they learn language and culture side by side. Soon students will study types of schooling
and high schools in Latin America by interpreting various photos and articles. Students will also research and
present on a celebration from a Latin American or Spanish culture.
Please practice as much as you can with students outside of school by watching TV in Spanish, reading signs,
and talking with Spanish speaking friends. I look forward to a lot of learning!

Volleyball Tournament - Mr. Smith
Volleyball is going awesome! Our first ever volleyball league is going
smooth as we find ourselves in second place with playoffs and the champion-
ship fast approaching. Izzy King and Kaley Clark have been leading the team
all season with some great serving by keeping the pressure on our opponents.
Annie Titan showed some impressive defense in last week’s match against
our rivals MSA-6. Our final regular season game was a narrow victory versus
Larchmont Charter. The eagles were led by some aggressive plays by Deanna
Smith and the awesome defense of Tiffany Amaro. Come and support our Eagle girls in the last few games.
The playoff game will be Friday Nov. 12 here at MSA-4. The championship game will be on Thursday Nov.
18 the location will be announced soon. Hope to see you there!

6th grade completed the first page of their Pop-Up books and are now beginning page 2. This
new page is dedicated to the American Artist Georgia O’Keefe. The students are learning wa-
tercolor techniques and using their skills to complete paintings of flowers.
7th grade are learning about the importance of a setting in a narrative artwork. They are com-
pleting drawings entitled “President Obama looks at….” 8th grade have also been learning about
drawing a human figure using the correct proportions.
8th grade have completed an oil pastel drawing of Cubist-style bottles. During this assignment
the students learned about Pablo Picasso and George Braque. They have also been learning
about color theory along with terms such as earth tones, warm and cool colors, analogous col-
ors, and complimentary colors.
Clay Club members have been busy creating Pinch pot sculptures and slab sculptures.
