SaunderS HouSe has been serving older adults in the community since 1864 when it first opened its doors in West Philadelphia under the name, The Old Man’s Home of Philadelphia. Operating continuously as a nonprofit organization for nearly 150 years, Saunders House has provided outstanding rehabilitation services and nursing care to thousands of senior citizens. Individuals from both city and suburbs come to Saunders House either to get stronger after a stay in the hospital or for long-term care once they can no longer live at home. To pay for their stays at Saunders House, residents use private funds, Medicare, or other insurance plans. Some residents whose funds are depleted may have their stays paid for by Medicaid — a government program that is consistent with the original Saunders House charitable mission. With a commitment to excellence, Saunders House offers rehab services, skilled nursing care, specialized dementia care, programs for the visually impaired, respite care, and hospice care.

BrYn MaWr TerraCe has a somewhat different story. Although its mission to provide healthcare services to older adults is the same, it has only been in existence since 1966 when the McClatchy family built the home to provide a premier place on the Main Line for senior citizens to live. Now, in its seventh year of operation as a nonprofit organization, the Terrace offers the levels of care of a larger continuing care retirement community but in a smaller, quiet, more home-like setting. Situated in the heart of the Main Line with traditional accommodations, the Terrace offers excellence in rehabilitation after a stay in the hospital, skilled nursing care, dementia care, respite care, independent living, and personal care (assistance).

MaIn LIne SenIor Care aLLIanCe was formed in 2012 as a management company designed to oversee the operations of the two nursing care and rehab centers. The 2007 affiliation of the two centers — each located near a major community hospital (Lankenau and Bryn Mawr Hospitals) — enables the organization to serve older adults from two convenient locations. The organization operates in accordance with a healthy tradition of care and wellness.

Once again, Saunders House and Bryn Mawr Terrace have demonstrated a high level of excellence this year. In the annual survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Saunders House received the top rating possible, with no deficiencies noted. This is a very high benchmark to achieve, and it is especially significant given that Saunders House is in its 150th year of continuous operation — an amazing accomplishment.

The Terrace was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best nursing homes in the country. It was also voted “Best of the Main Line” by area newspaper readers — an honor it has received several years in a row.

The Philadelphia area is fortunate to have two such outstanding organizations offering A Healthy Tradition of Care and Wellness to older adults in our community. Working hand in hand but operating as two separate entities – near two key community hospitals — Saunders House and the Terrace provide exceptional value to families who need our care. I encourage you to consider us for your needs!

Support for the work we do comes from a variety of sources. We are particularly pleased to receive donations from family members, residents, citizens of the community, and private foundations who choose to support our good work. On behalf of our Boards of Directors, I wish to thank those donors for their gifts. I also thank our vendors, volunteers, and staff members and the leadership of our two centers for working so hard and giving so much to the residents who select us for their care.

David R. Dugery Chairman, Board of Directors | Main Line Senior Care Alliance, Saunders House & Bryn Mawr Terrace

A Healthy Tradition of Care and Wellness is the new theme for our organization, intended to convey our longstanding commitment to helping people restore their health and wellness through the care we provide. Our renewed mission statements call for Saunders House and Bryn Mawr Terrace to be premier providers of rehabilitation and nursing care services in the greater Philadelphia region. Each and every day, we are confident we uphold that mission based on the compassion of our staff members and the expertise they bring to the care of our residents.

The theme and new mission statements are part of our new brand — just released this year. With updated websites, marketing materials, advertisements and signage, Saunders House and Bryn

Mawr Terrace are pleased to present to the community their continued expertise and dedication…now, under a new look. We invite you to take a look !

As we continue to face the challenge of dealing with complex medical issues, declining reimbursements, older adults living longer, and equipment and facility needs, we are encouraged by the progress we have made, the families we have served, and the very able staff we have in place to do the job. We thank all of our donors, our staff members and our volunteers for their loyal support and commitment to our mission.

Kevin M. Ross President & CEO | Main Line Senior Care Alliance, Saunders House & Bryn Mawr Terrace

There is never a dull moment at Saunders House. New residents arrive daily for therapy and rehabilitation, and long term residents participate in our robust therapeutic recreation program. Whether it’s a knee replacement patient performing strengthening exercises in our therapy gym or a resident interacting with student visitors who come as part of our intergenerational activity, our program is full, and each day is busy. All of these activities come together to provide the residents with A Healthy Tradition of Care and Wellness. As one resident said this year, “You people work so hard to make sure we have the right things to do, to keep us healthy and engaged.” We are proud of the special person-centered approach that Saunders House offers, matching

appropriate therapy and activities with each individual’s abilities and needs.

While our residents participate in a host of activities, our dedicated staff is constantly working on new ways to care for medically complex conditions, customer service techniques, facility improvements, and maintenance of our beautiful grounds. This is what we do every day at Saunders House, and I salute our staff for doing their jobs in the exemplary manner that enabled Saunders House to achieve the highest standard of performance this year.

Join us throughout the year as we celebrate 150 years of aging with grace.

Susan Irrgang Executive Director | Saunders House

When Bryn Mawr Terrace was named one of the best nursing homes in the country by U.S. News & World Report, our staff and our residents took the honor to heart and were very proud of the accomplishment. Receiving national recognition for the quality of our program indicated to all of us that our hard work and dedication are definitely producing the desired results. I am proud of our staff members for earning this distinctive honor, and I thank them for their efforts.

This year, as we adopt our new brand — A Healthy Tradition of Care and Wellness — we want all our residents… those who come for short-term rehab as well as those who live at the Terrace

long-term…to know that our staff and management are dedicated to that tradition. We intend to live into our brand, so the people we serve will recognize our commitment to our mission and the pride in the work we do.

When we see local residents and community leaders choosing Bryn Mawr Terrace for the care of their loved ones, we are gratified to be recognized as a senior care community of choice. As one gentleman wrote after he completed his rehab stay with us, “The food is good, the nursing staff is attentive and caring, the therapists were outstanding, and the facility is comfortable with a home-like touch.”

We invite all members of the community to consider Bryn Mawr Terrace for their loved ones’ needs.

Collin Tierney Executive Director | Bryn Mawr Terrace

invest in sAunders House & Bryn MAWr terrACeAs nonprofit organizations, Saunders House and Bryn Mawr Terrace have an enduring commitment to older adults that stems from a philanthropic mission. When the organizations collect money from fees, reimbursements, and other revenue, the costs of running our operations are subtracted from those revenues. Any money left over is not “profit” to be shared but rather funds for reinvestment in the organization. We focus all our resources on the care and comfort of the residents, and every year we reinvest as much money as we can in people and programs, in improvements to our facilities, and in acquiring new equipment. That is what a nonprofit does. To keep fees affordable and improve Saunders House and Bryn Mawr Terrace, we seek philanthropic partners to invest in our organizations. Gifts of all kinds are needed and welcomed.

CHAritABle CAre & ProgrAMMing suPPortFor almost 150 years, Saunders House has upheld a commitment to caring for older adults. Bryn Mawr Terrace has provided care for nearly 50 years. Our doors are open to a diverse group of individuals whose financial and healthcare needs can be quite different. Residents of Saunders House who participate in the Medicaid program receive charitable care on a daily basis as Medicaid does not cover the full cost of the care delivered. Residents of Bryn Mawr Terrace and Saunders House who participate in the LIFE program receive the benefit of our generous staffing levels and added programming that goes beyond the reimbursement available. It is through generous donations that we are able to add the meaningful programs that enrich the lives of our residents. Without the help of our donors, we would not be able to continue these beneficial programs.
