Keep Yourself Safe on the Internet – Chad Brockway (Back) We are excited to announce a special presentation on Thursday, Feb.15th at 7:00 PM. At this PARENTS ONLY event, Chad Brockway will speak about “Keeping our Children Safe on the Internet.” This event is open to ALL CRES Parents. His presentation was well received by parents, students, and staff the past three years. Learn to monitor your child’s devices to ensure their anonymity and prevent cyberbullying. Parents who attended last year said it was very helpful. This is a ‘not to be missed’ event for parents whose children use the internet or will soon gain access to the internet. Thank you to the CRES PTO for funding this special presentation. Mr. Brockway will meet with the 5th and 6th grade students Friday, Feb. 16th at 2:30 p.m. to share a very child-friendly session highlighting the importance of making wise decisions and being safe when online. Your child brought home an Opt-out Information sheet in today’s Wednesday folder. Please sign and return if you would NOT like your 5th/6th grade child to attend his session. Our guest speaker, Chad Brockway will share information on how your kids are using technology, and how technology can be used against your kids. Chad comes from an extensive background in Intelligence, counterintelligence, counter-terrorism and federal law enforcement. All of which has been primarily focused on emerging technology and cyber operations. Read below to learn more about Mr. Brockway’s experience:

- 1997-2001, Chad served as a Military Police Officer in the United States Marine Corps

assigned to the Marine One Helicopter Squadron and the White House Liaison Office.

- 2001-2004, Chad was assigned to the Department of Defense, Counterintelligence

Field Activity (CIFA), Law Enforcement Watch Center.

- 2004-2012, Chad was assigned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Special

Technologies and Applications Section (STAS).

- 2012-Present, Chad has worked for a private cyber operations firm here in Northern VA

- He also has a daughter who has graduated from the Fairfax County School System.

February 14 - Crossing Guard Appreciation Day! (Back) Ms. Edie has been the CRES Crossing Guard for YEARS!!! She always has a smile for everyone, a kind word for kids and adults, and a wonderful big heart. She never leaves her station until she knows every child who should be crossing has crossed. She knows everyone by name and, most importantly, safely crosses all the children every day. She is a treasure -- we are lucky to have her! CRES walkers and bikers celebrated Ms. Edie in a BIG way this morning! Along with a huge banner and fun thank you posters, walkers and bikers brought baked goods and flowers, gift cards, hand-made pictures and beautiful thank you notes and cards. Kids showed their appreciation for Ms. Edie with balloons and noisy cow-bells too! And a representative from the Fairfax County Police Department presented Ms. Edie with a gift and gift card as well. She was so very grateful and loved being celebrated.

6th Graders Explore American History through Art (Back) CRES sixth grade students visited the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on February 1st and 2nd for the museum’s American Connections tour. The tour provided students enrichment to our study of American History. Students explored works of art as primary resources that illuminate American history and culture. Students were asked to think about the paintings of American landscapes, portraits, and scenes of everyday life. They engaged with the works of art through analyzing different aspects such as horizontal and vertical lines, textures, lighting, and colors. They then discussed how the artist conveyed a certain mood with these techniques. The sixth grade students also collaborated with their classmates, sometimes in small groups, discussing what they saw and then shared their thoughts with their whole group. All students were given their own sketchbooks and had an opportunity to begin a sketch of their own before they left the museum to return to Colvin Run.

Parties and Birthday Celebration Reminders (Back)

As a reminder, please refrain from bringing in balloons, stuffed animals, or having flowers delivered to the classroom for your child. Birthday gifts and party invitations may not be distributed at school as this practice creates the potential for hurt feelings when some students are not included. Parents who want to send a treat for their child’s birthday must send a treat for each member of the class in celebration of his/her birthday. Parents are asked to check with the teacher before sending birthday treats. Birthday treats are not to be distributed in the cafeteria. The time to deliver the snack as well as student allergies and dietary concerns need to be considered by the parent and the teacher.

Annual Colvin Run STEAM Night and Share Fair (Back)

It Moves!!! Family STEAM Night & Share Fair March 1st Family and friends, build a project together that

“moves” in some way to share at our CRES STEAM Fair!!

This is a collaborative effort. When an adult is working on the project, they

MUST have child supervision at all times! (This is not a typo! )

Projects must be small enough to fit through the front doors of the school (in one

trip!)

Most of the project must be constructed from recyclable materials. No

premade kits.

Your project’s working parts may move using batteries (self-propelled), or you

may use an input force to start the motion (air, rubber band, touch to start, etc.).

We will have a separate roped off section on the floor for projects that move

~from place to place~.

Bring in Thursday after school, but before the start of STEAM Fair

Indicate on permission form if you need a table or floor for display.

Please have parent sign below to say they are aware you will be working on this

project

Family STEAM Night & Share Fair-Calling All Artists (Back)

Calling all CRES artists! March 1st STEAM Night is fast approaching and we'd like to put the AWESOME in STEAM…….but we need your ART to do it!

It must be created by a CRES student.

A maximum of 3 entries per CRES student will be accepted.

It must be submitted to Ms.Grimm or Ms. Wiseman Wednesday, Feb. 21st - Friday, Feb. 23rd. No artwork will be accepted after Friday, Feb. 23rd.

Your family will take the artwork home after the STEAM Share Fair.

News from the Health Room (Back) We are working to ensure all our students have a healthy and happy start to the new year. To help us in that effort, our custodians and staff continue to do a wonderful job keeping our school clean for our students, staff, and school community. We continue to proactively monitor our absences to ensure our students’ continued success and health.

Students with a fever of 100.4 or above should not come to school. They should remain at home until fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

Students experiencing vomiting or diarrhea should remain at home until symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.

When reporting student illness via the CRES Online Absence Form, please be specific to include medical symptoms and temperature if there is a fever.

Other everyday preventative actions:

Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

Wash hands often.

To learn more about the flu and what you can do to help your child, please see the below information.

Third Grade Egypt Day (Back) By Sara P. and Mia N. Us third graders had a lot of fun on Egypt day! This is what we did:

● Ancient Egyptian costumes- Most people dressed up like Egyptian people such as queens,

Pharaohs, and scribes. All the classes took group photos of us in our awesome costumes. We

wore accessories like cuffs, necklaces, hats, belts and sashes.

● Cookie maps of Egypt- We made maps of Egypt out of food! First, we covered graham crackers

in frosting. Then, we sprinkled blue sprinkles in a squiggly line and a triangle to make the Nile

and the Delta. Then, we used butterscotch chips to make pyramids and temples. Then, we

sprinkled brown sugar around everything to make the sand. Last, we ate it - yum!

● Our name in hieroglyphs- We learned all about hieroglyphs and cartouches. We also got a

booklet with all the letters and sounds in hieroglyphs and got a cartouche to write our names in

hieroglyphs on it. Then, we colored it with markers, felt tip pens, and colored pencils.

● Egyptian snacks- We brought in foods that were similar to the one the ancient Egyptians ate like

dates, raisins, sardines, and pomegranate juice and we watched a video about shadufs.

● Online quest - We went to a website with partners about ancient Egyptians and answered

questions with the information on that site.

● Sugar cube pyramids- We stacked square layers of sugar cubes with glue to make the shape of

a ancient Egyptian pyramid.

● Making a shaduf- We made a shaduf with tree branches, pantyhose with rocks in them, and two

buckets for the water bucket and the “Nile”. We also watched a video of a real shaduf and how

they worked it.

We had a bunch of fun on Egypt day! Thank you to our teachers and parents!!

McLean Youth Soccer Recreation Program Spring 2018

The MYS Recreation Program provides youth ages U4 - U19, birth years 2014

through 1999 an opportunity to have fun while playing soccer with other players in the

area. The program focuses on individual player development and the enjoyment of

the game of soccer - not on teams or winning games. We believe it is important for our players,

parents and coaches to embrace this philosophy, as it is an important foundation of MYS.

The Recreation program includes the following programs:

U4: Game-based program for our youngest players

U5: Academy style, non-team-based introduction to soccer for our pre-K players

U6-U7: Academy style, non-results, team-based developmental program

U8-U12: Team-oriented program promoting fun and player development

U13-U19: Team-based program that competes against area club teams in the local area

Registration for the 2018 Spring season opens on January 1. Players should register before March 1

to be guaranteed a spot on a team. Beginners are always welcome! Visit our website at

www.mcleansoccer.org/recreation for more information and to register.

MYS also offers TOPSoccer, which brings the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to young

athletes with disabilities. www.mcleansoccer.org/recreation_Topsoccer
