From the Sailing CommodoreHello, Beulah – welcome to the 2018 campaign! After a seemingly interminable winter – was it really just three weeks ago that the snow blowers were out? Yes – we finally have soft water and the temperatures are finally seasonal. It could be worse, our friends up Minnetonka way were driving cars across two-foot-thick ice sheets almost to May! Speaking of Minnetonka, the ILYA championships are up there and it’s going to be an amazing event so everyone make your plans now to head up to ILYA Commodore Dave Porter’s big shindig!

Closer to home here on golden pond, it’s been a busy offseason. The board and our helpers have put in a ton of time and effort getting things squared away. Huge and special thanks to Candace Porter and Christine McNeil for herculean efforts in getting us to the new website platform, and surveying everyone and incorporating feedback into the RC schedules! Beyond that, a couple noteworthy items as we get things rolling:

• New website is amazing in a lot of ways – if you’ve had trouble registering please email Candace directly and she’ll get you squared away – remember if you’re not all paid up your sailboat won’t be scored!

• Speaking of scoring, we also have a new scoring system, and you’ll be getting an email asking you to join the program – PLEASE REPLY when you get it, you must do so to be scored

• RC scheduling is all in and done and online – find your assignments and PLEASE PUT THEM onto your personal calendar!

• RC and Race schedules will be printed in the yearbook, but this is likely the last year for that – the website

calendar will be considered the official calendar of record starting this year.

• NOR and SI documentation will NOT be printed in the yearbook but you’ll be able to find them on the website under Sailing-Notice Board

Beyond that we’ll be getting organized in the early season with fleet and RC meetings, as well as some rules education in keeping with the renewed ILYA emphasis on sportsmanship and fair sailing.

Finally, racing season is now in full swing, and Beulah is already representing. Glenn McMurray and crew won the opening regatta down in Springfield and then Joe Byrnes narrowly missed the title at the Icebreaker. Racing on Beulah starts 5.19 weekend and then it’s full on come Memorial Day!

Let me know if you have questions or suggestions, always happy to talk sailing! In the meantime, fair winds and following seas.

- Joe

House & Grounds Report by: Greg Thomas

INFRASTRUCTURE

As the Yacht Club Building approaches its twentieth anniversary, original equipment may need to be replaced as they approach their serviceable life. Future decisions will need to be made by the Board whether to continue with the preventative maintenance schedule or to replace equipment. A case in point was this springs decision to replace the heat exchanger in the air handling unit the heats and cools the dining room and kitchen. It was a major component of the machine but since on-going preventative maintenance has kept the unit in good condition the Board elected to replace the heat exchanger after comparing repair costs to replacement costs.

SEAWALL

At last fall’s Annual Meeting it was brought to the attention of the membership that the West Exposure of the existing seawall was eroded due to winds, waves and ice plate damage. The North 100 foot segment that begins just north of the large T-shaped pier is the section of seawall that needs the repair.

The Wisconsin DNR has stated that since the seawall has a permit on record with the State of Wisconsin, no new permit is required to repair and maintain the existing wall.

The Board intends to execute the repairs by “The Mudjackers” and “Complete Piers and Lifts, LLC” as a team to repair the existing seawall with concrete and install a riprap barrier wall in front of the seawall and repair. They have worked together before. This will only be installed on the North segment of the seawall at this time. The South segment can be done independently of this repair scenario. The Board feels this is a good long term repair option of the seawall.

SPRING WORK DAY

The Spring work day is scheduled to occur on Saturday, May 19, from 8:30 till noon. We will once again offer a flexible schedule starting the week before the work day on Monday, May 15, culminating on Saturday. There will be work cards available at the front table allowing you to pick your own scope of work during the week. The Saturday date is also the date of the Lake Beulah Protection and Improvement Association Annual meeting which allows you the golden opportunity for two morning donut locations. LBPIA will be discussing the proposed Town of East Troy ordinance restricting wave enhancement on Mill Lake.

House and Grounds Chair Greg Thomas is seen here in action finishing up paint touch up work on the main pier at the club. A team effort lead by Greg consisting of Jeff Lippert, Don Franzene, Dennis Smalley and Al Haeger all worked to re-paint the piers at the club this Spring.” Further thanks to Greg for spearheading and handling the maintenance and repair of the piers and seawalls as they are vital to the functioning of the LBYC.

The ‘Off ’ Season

The lovely Dee Bach and Nancy Roble got to chat and catch up on Beulah News over the Winter at a South Florida Boat Show. Beulah neighborhood ties run deep, even South of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Ron, Sue, Dan and Neal Klement spent a wonderful week at Tim Lange & Julie Brandt’s home in Wilson, WY in March, as winners of the 2017 LBSS Live Auction benefiting LBSS. Ron and Sue are pictured here skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

John Porter and Robert Hudson (photographer, just off screen) take an early spring ride with Mike Considine on his E-Scow, a rare site for our little pond!
