It’s Been a Wonderful Year! The final report of the year has been sent to Heritage Ohio, and before closing

the door on 2013, I would like to take a moment to share with you all the amaz-

ing things that have happened with Main Street Portsmouth over the past year.

Here are the highlights by the numbers:

$25,000 was awarded to 5 Building Improvement Grant Program

receipts within the Main Street Portsmouth District

into Portsmouth to create something we can all be proud of!

Main Street Portsmouth hosted many successful events throughout the year,

here are a few to get you excited for the coming year!

February’s Chocolate Walk kicks off the event season for Main Street. This fun

and delicious event sees approximately 300 participants who are eager to

sample a wide variety of chocolates from the downtown businesses.

A community favorite, the Main Street Portsmouth Farmer’s Market is the best

way to welcome summer. The Farmer’s Market months were filled with deli-

cious baked goods, fresh home-grown produce, maple syrups and honey, and

many unique crafts. Thanks to the support of Southern Ohio Medical Center

(SOMC) and Port City Café & Pub, every Saturday morning the market was

able to offer many health screenings, fitness workouts, live music and perform-

Beautification with Shade Tree Commission This past year has been busy for the Shade Tree Commission committee, with a lot of planning and discussion for a streetscape, 2014 is ready and lined up with plans for new trees along Chillicothe Street. Urban Forester, Ann Bonner, has been very helpful with educating the committee on proper tree care, from the planting of the tree down to the maintenance and repair. Chairman, Lisa Gibson, of the Shade Tree Commission said in 2014 the Portsmouth Shade Tree Com-mission will learn the results of the city’s application for recertification as a Tree City USA by the Na-tional Arbor Day Foundation. She said they also plan to continue with the beautification of the main downtown thoroughfares, Chillicothe and Second Streets, with the replacement of missing or dying trees. It is their hope to also begin formulating an application to the State of Ohio for assistance with beautification projects for the state route gateways into the community. Arbor Day celebra-tions are also in the works as well for 2014. She said they are always looking for interested citizens and businesses to join their efforts. The Portsmouth Shade Tree Commission meets the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m. at Port City Café & Pub 424 Chillicothe Street. Interested persons may call 740-352-9870 to confirm meeting time and location.
