All DriversYou must also remember that the roads are not always safe; therefore, it is in your best interest to prepare for whatever may come your way before you begin driving. When you begin driving, you not only take on the responsibility for your safety, but you also take on the responsibility of the safety of your passengers and all passengers in the vehicles around you. Therefore, in order to best prepare yourself to take on that responsibility, it is always wise to obtain your learner’s permit first and get comfortable on the road.

In Maine, you can obtain your learner’s permit by 15 years of age. Depending on the age of the permit holder, requirements to hold a permit and apply for a standard driving license can vary. You may be able to submit your permit application by mail, but if you have not completed a driver’s education course, you have to apply for your learner’s permit in person. You are not required to take a driver’s education course in order to obtain your learner’s permit if you are 18 years of age or older.

If you would like to understand how to obtain your learner’s permit in person, you must:

Visit a BMV office location.

Fill out the Non-Commercial Class C Application Form (MVE 64 Form).

Provide one proof of your driver education certificate of completion.

• This is optional if you are 18 years of age or older.

Bring your birth certificate.

• You can provide either the original or a certified copy with an embossed seal or stamp.

• If you 23 years of age or older, you do not need to bring your birth certificate.

Pay the fee of $35.

• Verify the method of payment with your chosen BMV office before applying for a permit, as some offices may not accept all methods of payment. Many offices accept cash, checks or money orders made payable to the Secretary of State and credit/debit cards from Visa, Discover or MasterCard.

Vision Exam

Getting your vision checked before you obtain your learner’s permit or driver’s license is essential to ensure that you are physically capable of driving. The exam is very straightforward and will only be required if you are obtaining your first Maine driver’s license, you are changing your license classification, or in certain cases, if you are older than 40 years of age.

When you turn 40 years of age, you will be required to take the vision test when you go to renew your license, and you have to retake the test every other time you go to renew your license. Once you reach 62 years old though, you must take the vision test every time you renew your license. The vision test is free of charge and you are able to take it when you go to take your written or driven examination. You can choose to do the vision screenings outside of the DMV as your preferred eye doctor. If you choose this method, you must have the physician complete the eye examination form, and you must submit the completed form during your exam for your driving credentials.

You have the option to take the test in eleven different languages, depending on what you require. Teen DriversIf you are a teenager on the brink of entering adulthood, chances are you are currently dreaming of obtaining your driver’s license. Well, we are here to help you to make that dream a reality! In each step moving towards obtaining your license, we will outline and help you to better understand each procedure you must complete. When you are a new driver, it is important that you carefully read each step and fully understand how everything operates. This is to ensure that you avoid any complications, but also to be sure that you are well prepared to take on your responsibilities on the road. So let us begin the journey!

Step 1: Learner’s permit

The first step you must take after you have finished your driver’s education is to obtain your learner’s permit. This permit will allow you to practice driving behind the wheel until you are officially ready to get your limited provisional driver’s license and, afterwards, your full provisional driver’s license.

To begin, you first need to be at least 15 years of age in order to obtain your learner’s permit. Along with being a certain age, you must have completed a driver’s education course, as well as have taken your written and vision test before you are given your learner’s permit. If you are older than 18 years of age, you will not be required to complete a driver’s education course to obtain your learner’s permit.

The intermediate license has restrictions for anyone younger than 18 and these restrictions must be obeyed to maintain driving privileges. If you hold an intermediate license and you are not yet 18 years of age, you:

When you receive the intermediate license, you must hold the license for 270 days before applying for an unrestricted license. All licensees for vehicle operation are considered provisional licenses for two years after the issuance. You should note that the restrictions of this license do not apply after 270 days.

Step 2: Driver License

The next step will be towards obtaining your intermediate driver’s license. This license will allow you to continue practicing to drive behind the wheel until you are officially ready to obtain your unrestricted driver’s license once you fulfill the necessary requirements. Drivers Between 15 and 17 Years of Age

If you are a motorist between the ages of 15 and 17 years, you can obtain a driving license with restrictions under certain circumstances. In this age range, you can obtain an intermediate license. To get an intermediate license you must:

Restricted Driver’s License for Applicants 15 Years of Age

The Maine BMV also offers restricted licenses under certain circumstances. If you need a license for educational reasons or for work-related reasons, you may be eligible for a restricted license. This license has slightly different restrictions that allow you to travel outside certain hours for employment or school-related purposes. To qualify, you must be 15 years of age or older, and you must take and pass a driver’s ed course approved by the Maine BMV. You must also complete the driving log requirements of 70 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours of nighttime driving. You can receiver this license if you do not have transportation for school and/or work. For example, if you have access to transportation provided by the school, you will not be eligible for an educational restricted license. The BMV also offers a restricted medical license for all drivers when necessary for trips to and from a medical appointment. Drivers 21 Years of Age and Older

If you apply for a permit when you are 21 years of age or older, the steps to a standard license are far simpler. You do not need to submit proof of driving practice, nor do you need to complete a driver’s education class. You do not have restrictions on when you can apply for a road skills test. After holding a permit and applying for a standard license, your license is considered a provisional license. This provisional license period is only for one year. For all provisional licenses and permits, violations of restrictions or of laws and regulations can result in a license suspension. Once you have completed the period of restriction, you may apply for your unrestricted driver credentials.

Driving TestTaking a driving test is necessary in order for the BMV to determine your driving skills level. The first part of the exam, which includes a safety check, will show the examiner that you have an acceptable level regarding your vehicle. When you go to take your driving test, you are required to provide a vehicle that is both insured, and passes the safety requirements. This inspection can require you to show that your lane change signal lights, your car horn and your car headlights are all in working order, among other requirements.

If you are a new resident to Maine and hold a valid out of state driver license, you may not be required to take a driving test in order to obtain your Maine driver license. In the case that you are still required to take your driving test however, you must begin by scheduling your road test with the Indiana BMV.

Adult Drivers: Never Had a Driver LicenseIf you are 18 years of age or older, have never had a license and are now looking to obtaining one then, you have come to the right place. Getting a license for first-time drivers is a very simple process through the state of Maine by first following the steps on how to apply.

Adult Provisional License

If you are 21 years of age or older and have finished obtaining your learner’s permit, you need to obtain your adult provisional license before you can obtain your unrestricted driver’s license. While you hold your provisional license, you must abide by all the rules of the road in place for the state of Maine. If you are convicted of a moving motor vehicle violation, your license will be suspended during the following terms:




Second offense will result in a 180-day suspension.




Third offense will result in a one-year suspension. Additional violations will also result in a one-year suspension.

Adult Drivers: New ResidentIf you already hold a license from another state and have become a new resident of Maine, you will need to obtain a Maine license within 30 days of establishing residency. To get a new Maine driving license as a new state resident, you must:

Part of this includes renewing your driving license by the expiration date stated on your credentials. A Maine driver’s license expires every six years if you are younger than 65 years of age. However, if you are 65 years or older, your license will expire every four years. Regardless, you may renew your license as early as six months before the expiration date. The Maine BMV offers in-person and online renewal for eligible motorists.

You must take a vision test when you go to renew your license after you turn 40 of age, and every other time you go to renew your license until you turn 62 years of age. Renewing in PersonOne of the easiest ways to renew your license is to go directly to the BMV office in person to renew it. This method is easier because it requires no qualifications to do so, all it requires is that you bring along a few documents to show one proof of your identity, residency and lawful presence. To renew your driver’s license in person, you need to:

Visit a BMV office location or a mobile unit location that provides renewal services.

Provide proof of your Maine residency to show your physical address location.

Renewing OnlineThe state of Maine allows that you renew your driver’s license online as well, but you will have to meet certain requirements before you are eligible. If you do not meet the qualifications needed, please look into renewing your driver’s license in person. To renew online, you must:

Have a current and valid driver’s license. For example, no one with a revoked or suspended license can renew online.

Hold a standard, non-commercial driver’s license issued by the Maine BMV.

Make sure that the BMV has proof of legal presence and proof of Maine residency. If the BMV does not have these proofs, you must provide this information in person.

Not have a name change since the last time you renewed your driving credentials.

Not have a medical condition that impacts your ability to drive.

• This refers to a development of a new condition and to a change in a current medical condition.

Not need a vision screening.

• The BMV requires that drivers who turn 40 years of age get an eye exam for the renewal following this age. Additionally, drivers must get an eye exam every other renewal after their 40th birthday. Drivers 62 years of age or older must get a vision screening for every renewal after they turn 62 years of age.

Additionally, to renew your driver’s license online, you must have your Social Security Number, a printer and a Visa or MasterCard debit/credit card for the necessary fees. UpdatingYour License Information

Whenever you make any changes to your personal information, it is important that you update your Maine driver’s license along with other important documents. If you change your name for any reason, you may wish to update your name to keep your license current and accurate, especially if your use your license as a primary form of identification. When you move to a new place of residence within Maine, make sure to update your BMV records and credentials. Additionally, if you change to your gender designation, the BMV has a form you can use to update your credentials. For more details on each process, read the sections below.


Changing Your NameMaking the decision to change your name is not only a big personal decision, but also it will also greatly affect your documents and general information in regards to your identity. Updating your records and credentials with the BMV will allow you to keep using your license as a valid form of identification. If you need to make any name corrections on your license, you can also follow this process. Before making any license changes, you must make sure to update your name with Social Security Administration. You must update your name with the BMV within 30 days of the change, and you must provide proof of the change. This proof can be a marriage certificate, a court order or a divorce decree. After making the update with the BMV, you can order a duplicate license pay the duplicate fee of $5.

Once you complete the above steps, the BMV office will give you a temporary driver’s license that will be valid for 60 days. Changing Your AddressIn the case that you may have recently moved to a new address, it is essential that you update the address with the BMV. You will be required to notify the Maine BMV of any change in address within 30 days. When you make the update at a BMV office or a participating mobile unit location, you must bring proof of residency to show your new address. It is important to change your mailing and/or residential address to ensure that you get all important BMV notices and correspondences. Once you update your address information, you can order a replacement license for $5.

Once you complete the above steps, the BMV office will give you a temporary driver’s license that will be valid for 60 days. ReplacingYour License


Replacing in PersonThe most common way to replace your driver’s license is to go directly to a BMV office or a participating mobile unit location and request a duplicate license. This method is straightforward and fairly easy, requiring only that you prepare certain documents to bring along when you visit the BMV office. These standards are very basic, and you most likely will be able to provide the needed information without much worry. To better understand how to renew your driver’s license in person, please read the steps below:

Visit the BMV office.

Provide two proofs of your identity.

• One of these proofs must have your birth date and the other must have your signature.

Fill out and submit a form that confirms that you do not have your license.

Pay the fee of $5.

• You should make sure to verify the method of payment with your chosen BMV office, as some offices may not accept all methods of payment. Many offices accept cash, checks or money orders made payable to the Secretary of State and credit/debit cards from Visa, Discover or MasterCard.

Once you complete the above steps, the BMV office will give you a temporary driver’s license that will be valid for 60 days. Replacing OnlineThe Maine BMV offers online replacement for eligible motorists. To replace your license online, you must:

Have a current and valid driver’s license. For example, no one with a revoked or suspended license can renew online.

Hold a standard, non-commercial driver’s license issued by the Maine BMV.

Make sure that the BMV has proof of legal presence and proof of Maine residency. If the BMV does not have these proofs, you must provide this information in person.

Not have a name change since the last time you renewed your driving credentials.

Not have a medical condition that impacts your ability to drive.

• This refers to a development of a new condition and to a change in a current medical condition.

Not need a vision screening.

• The BMV requires that drivers who turn 40 years of age get an eye exam for the renewal following this age. Additionally, drivers must get an eye exam every other renewal after their 40th birthday. Drivers 62 years of age or older must get a vision screening for every renewal after they turn 62 years of age.

Replacing by MailIf you are unable to visit the BMV office in person due to being out of state, if you are medically incapable, or you do not have the time to visit the BMV office you have the option of replacing your driver’s license through the mail. To replace by mail, you need to write a request for the duplicate. With this written request, make sure that you include your current address, your birth date, your name and a statement that you no longer have your license. This statement should include a description of why you no longer have your license. You may include this form for the statement, if desired. You may receive a license revocation or suspension for any traffic violations, and you will need to apply for license reinstatement to get your driving privileges back. Suspensions and revocations may require a variety of tasks for reinstatement, such as payment of fees, attendance of driving classes, court dates and more.

The requirements for reinstatement depend on the offense and the amount of times you have committed the offense. Revocation and suspension periods will also vary by offense. A license suspension is slightly different from a revocation, although they may follow similar requirements. A suspension is temporary hold on driving privileges, whereas a revoked license can only be reinstated through a completely new license application. The BMV department will only reinstate your driver’s license if you complete all of the necessary requirements to remove any restrictions from your license.

Reinstating Your License


To begin, you will be required to pay all of your fees, fines, as well as any court fees. To do this you can visit a branch of the BMV office and pay in person or pay by phone at 207-624-9000. You can also obtain your driving record by mail or online, which will display all records of your driving violations, suspensions, revocations and/or general driving history during the last three years for $5 or the last ten years for $10 by clicking here.
