MAINLANDS UNIT 2 TOWN CRIER MAY – JUNE – JULY – AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2017
1
Little Summer Break -TOWN CRIER will be back in October! Sally Kruse, Editor – e-mail: [email protected]
This will be the last issue of the TOWN CRIER until October. Please save this issue – it includes the events from May until September. Some of our residents leave for the summer months, but those of us that stay have a fun summer planned. Please join us at Kaffee Klatch every Wednesday morning 8 – 9 a.m. to find out the latest news on what is happening in Unit 2. Sign-up sheets will be on the bulletin board for the various events planned during the summer months. We need volunteers and it’s a great way to meet your neighbors and make new friends.
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Fay Burgeson, President, Unit 2 Homeowners Association (On behalf of your Homeowners Board)
May is a month of changes...the weather is getting more consistent, many of our friends are heading north, the kids are getting out of school and we may have some grandchildren visiting, we’re getting some of our cement repaired and a current topic of discussion is gating our community. It’s all good, except we will be missing our friends for a few months. Hope they will all travel safely and return to us as soon as possible! May seems to be a time for reflection, too, or maybe it’s because we are ordering memorial bricks to honor those that have served us so well in the past that we do not want to forget them. We have been so fortunate to have had so many people that have taken their time to serve all of us. We are also experiencing some changes in our
community which are supported by some and not supported by others. Frankly, I trust us and look forward to a resolution that will work for us all. Notice: The pool rules have been changed as voted by the Board to read: “All incontinent swimmers must use swim diapers.” The “under 3 years old rule” has been removed.
Memory Bricks are available to purchase with the name of a loved one and date. The Memory Bricks will replace the bricks surrounding the flagpole in the front of the clubhouse at a cost of $ 50. Contact Jerry Smith @ (727) 368-2298 if interested in purchasing a brick for your loved one.

Faith Burgeson, President, HOA Board
We have one “new resident” in Unit 2, however, she isn’t “NEW”! I know that hardly makes sense, but Geneva (Jean) Bajorek is becoming an owner of the home she previously rented. Jean will be the new owner of the home at 4450 101st Avenue North. We’ve always felt that you were one of us from the start, Jean! It is important that we get to know those that have moved into our neighborhoods. If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit the new folks, please make the time to do that.
DO WE WANT TO GATE OUR COMMUNITY? On Monday, April 17th, the Masters Meeting was held at the Unit 2 Clubhouse. Anyone that wanted to attend was welcome. One of the items on the agenda was “Gates”. Information was shared and a discussion ensued. There were pros and cons – so much so, that the meeting was dismissed with a promise of getting more information on the subject and to meet for further discussion. On Monday, May 1st, at 9:00 a.m., at Unit 5 Clubhouse, there will be a continuation of this discussion. All of you that would like to attend, please do so. Thank you for your interest and commitment to help keep our Community the best it can be.

Margot was born in Brooklyn, New York, but at six weeks old moved to the beautiful suburb of Melrose. Massachusetts, just north of Boston. She was married for ten years, had two children and held various positions (Personnel for Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company; New England Memorial Hospital – secretary, scheduling coordinator, staff development and ended up in nursing administration). Margot’s marriage did not work out and she became a single mother. 1984, after the children were raised and educated, she began to visit her parents in Florida – they lived in Mainlands, Unit 1. It didn’t take long and Margot knew this is where she wanted to spend her golden years. She purchased a home in Mainlands Unit 2 in 1988 and began working for a subsidiary of Home Shopping Precision Software as the president’s assistant. 1989 she was introduced to Doug by her Canadian cousins (they were renting a house in Unit 2). Doug won her heart and in October 1992 they were married in Feather Sound Church. The reception was held at the Unit 2 Clubhouse with family, Mainlands’ friends, and others. Dottie and Frank Fallon were her coordinators and they booked a live band and catered dinner. 1993 Doug and Margot became snowbirds six months in Canada and six months in Florida. Their life together was cut short when Doug passed away. Margot returned back to Unit 2 with a heavy heart and too much time on her hands. She joined the Women's Club and started volunteering at Northside Hospital front desk and still does today. For several years volunteered for the Unit 2 Annual Christmas Charity Show - first behind the counter with cookies with Dottie and then was recruited to the stage. Rachel Filiau asked her to fill in selling BINGO cards – that was at least five years ago and she is still there. She also volunteered at the Watson Center for the Blind making greeting cards with a few other friends from Unit 2, but this has since been discontinued. Margot has always loved Mainlands and the friends she has made over the years. So many of her friends have moved closer to family or passed away. Being the youngest of this group 29 years ago I guess it’s to be expected, but sad for her. She was told many times "Margot you need to make younger friends". She said “I am now, one of the oldies that “slippery slope” has wedged into my life and has limited my activities. Like most of us we do the best we can and try not to give up. There are things we can get involved in if we choose that's what is so great about Mainlands. My mom would always remind me that Mainlands is the “jewel of Pinellas Park”. *******************************************************************************************

ANNUAL CHARITY CHRISTMAS SHOW CASTING CALL!! DEBBIE SMITH, CHAIR
Merry Christmas!!! Did you read that correctly, yes!! This is Debbie Smith letting you know that I have accepted the responsibility of chairing the 2017 annual Christmas Charity Show. No talent needed, only the ability to enjoy ourselves and have the willingness to make people smile and dare I say, laugh out loud. I have come up with several new ideas & hope you bring some too. Put those thinking caps on this summer & come back in the fall ready to “become the star" you were always meant to be!!
KAFFEE KLATCH
We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044 as far in advance as possible so that he can be prepared.
CRIME PATROL FOR UNIT 2 Have you ever noticed the flashing lights coming by your home at dark? No, not the ambulances, but the dedicated volunteers that take the time to drive around at night to check on your property. The crime patrol needs more volunteers. Wouldn’t you like to volunteer? You only have to look and listen – if you see something suspicious – call Pinellas Park Police (727) 541-0758. If you are interested, call Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044. Please help to keep our Unit 2 safe.
