Commodore’s CommentsBy the time you read this, my term as Commodore will be almost complete, with only the commodore’s ball (gulp) and annual meeting remaining. If you’re attending the commodore’s ball, I thank you in advance and ask you to take whatever is said there with a grain of salt! More importantly, I strongly encourage you to attend the annual meeting to elect officers and discuss the state of the club.

It seems too mild to just say thanks to my fellow board members. LBYC is a very active club, requiring a hard-working, engaged board, and we spent many a long evening together in deliberation. Special thanks to our outgoing members: Vicki Bohl, John Porter, Steve Rotier, and Jeff Mueller.

When I began my term, I thought we needed to focus on youth participation in sailing, nurturing our volunteers, sound finances, and community outreach. There is good news in each of these areas – we have new youth sailors, new volunteers stepping up to give others a break, current financial strength (with some looming challenges), and several positive interactions with the community. From the Sailing CommodoreILYA Championship Beulah results...

A Scows - I-96 - White Magic with half Beulah crew 9th, and I-333 Red-Eye - Dave Davenport and all Beulah crew 10th.

C Scows - B-12 - Kent Haeger 3rd, B-1 - Will Haeger 4th, B303 - Frank Davenport 6th, B66 - Michael Barr 7th, B333 - Annie Haeger 8th, B18 - Brian Brickler 12th, B217 - Ann Muller 13th, B19 - Scotty Sullivan 15th, B317 - John Porter 18th !

Nine boats in the top 20 of a 66 boat fleet. Nice showing Beulah C Fleet... JP says, “Best C Fleet in the Nation.” and these results prove it...

MC Scows - The Beulah MC Fleet didn’t fare as well at the big Inland. A combination of wind, waves, and lousy weather challenged the scheduled races and the fleet only completed 3 races. Better luck next year.

At the Inland there were 30 Beulah boats and 1 Geneva boat with half Beulah crew. That is quite a representation of the quality of sailing at our club.

It is refreshing to see the resurgence in Opti Green fleet sailors. We started the season with none and now we have six!

Prime Regatta season is over with great results. Beulah still has the Dorn MC and Nan Norris Beulah Challenge C Regattas which we host in September. It’s not over till the fat lady sings...

Beulah is proud of it’s fleets and the volunteers who make it all possible. It is you who make Beulah great! A big Thank You.

See you on the Water,

Steve Barth

Beulah Women’s Sailors NAMED TO ICSA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

The LBYC is proud to announce that two of our Collegiate Women’s Sailors were named to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).

The following is an excerpt form the ICSA Website, Published 8-18-2017; 2016-17 All-Academic Sailing Team. The All Academic team designation honors college sailors that achieved excellence in national and inter-conference competition as well as excelling at the highest academic level for the 2016-17 academic year. The criteria for the honorees are that he or she must be a Junior or Senior, have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or key reserve in at least seven university sponsored regattas. A seven-person committee comprised of representatives from conferences in the ICSA evaluates the nominated sailors. This year’s All-Academic Team is comprised of 223 members.

Two Members of the Team from Lake Beulah Yacht Club are Kate Klement, Senior at University of Wisconsin in Interior Architecture & Mary Claire Kiernan, Alumni of Tufts University with a Degree in Child Study & Human Development.

Congratulations to our ladies!

2017 Inland Championship at LGYC a Banner Event for C-Fleet! Your venerable Lake Beulah C Fleet traveled in full force to Lake Geneva Yacht Club for the 2017 ILYA Championships August 16-20. This was a highly anticipated event as 2017 marked the third year of the Inland event being hosted by LGYC. After three years of training, countless hours of practice, preparation and logistical trial and error, Lake Geneva had it dialed in for this multi-event fleet. With over 200 scows scattered across the property between, A’s E’s, C’s & MC’s, a total of 19 Beulah boats competed against a total of 66 C-Scows over the four day event.

Racing began early Thursday morning with a forecast of 15-25MPH breeze. Kent Haeger and Mike Greeson with third Erin Monahan lead the charge in day one with incredibly strong sailing throughout both races landing them two very well deserved first place finishes in Races 1 & 2.

B-317, John Porter & Pat Welscher, followed in second in Race 1 after an extremely tight finish B-333 sailed by our Olympians, Annie Haeger & Luke Ramsay with Neal Klement as third, producing a very solid fourth place finish. The breeze was up, spirits were high, the waves were huge and all were ready for a second race!

The Inland has adopted a two race per day per fleet format which has allowed sailors to race in multiple fleets or use their energy to pour in all on the line racing in a singular fleet. Either way there has been a general consensus that the quality of racing and number of boats on the starting lines have been positively impacted. In addition the camaraderie experienced at an event of this style is second to none.

In Race 2, the unrelenting breeze stayed strong and a squall line came in from the West during the final windward leg. Despite the windy conditions Beulah prevailed with the B-12’s first place finish, Annie Haeger in 3rd and B-18, Brian & Kevin Brickler, in 4th. Other top tens in Race 2 included, Frank Davenport & Ron Jarecki in 9th and Will Haeger, Joe Kutsch & Kate Klement on the B-1 in 10th respectively.

Thursday evening was a welcome sight after a long afternoon on the water with the majority of the male sailors headed to the annual Bilge Pullers Dinner and a large remainder off to celebrate Kate Klement’s 23rd Birthday. Further evening festivities commenced at Chuck’s in Fontana which became a common theme for the duration of the regatta.

Friday brought sunny skies, a touch humidity and virtually no sailable breeze along with noticeably more boat traffic. Without wind, the day was filled with extended sleep, an early lunch and lots of off water discussion waiting for breeze that never filled. Even on a day such as Day 2, Lake Geneva is fine place to be. Friday evening saw the ILYA Sail It Forward Dinner with a family theme. The Frank Davenport, Sr. Family were honored as members of both Lake Beulah & Lake Geneva YC.

Saturday or Day 3 saw two more races, considerably more weekend boat chop, and fairly respectable breezes. Top finishers for the day included Anne Muller & Joe Sko who sailed RYOT into a 4th place finish in Race 3, Michael Barr who had a 5th place finish in R3, B-1 in 8th and B-303 in 10th. The evening treated sailors and spectators to a wonderful prime rib dinner sponsored by US Sailing where Candace Porter was presented with the CREW Award, a much-deserved high honor for her volunteer efforts and contributions to the sport sailing.

Tired and a little weary, sailors pushed forward on to Day 4, Sunday, which brought about exceedingly high levels of boat chop, large waves and frustratingly light winds. The boats equipped with lighter crew faired the best in these trying conditions that were somewhat akin to sailing in a wash machine. Holding a line and a competitive angle was a tall order but Will Haeger’s B-1 prevailed with a massive lead over second place posting a bullet in Race 5. Glenn McMurray and Andrea Lee took a highly respectable 5th place in R5! With experience and miles under their belt, Frank Davenport & Ron Jarecki rocketed the B-303 to a monstrous lead over the second place boat ending the event on a high note. Overall this was another high quality, highly memorable event for your Lake Beulah C-Fleet!

Annie Haeger, Luke Ramsay and Neal Klement sailed the B-333 for the event.

Kent Haeger, Mike Greeson and Erin Monahan won both Race 1 & Race 2 finishing 3rd overall

Candace Porter Receives US Sailing C.R.E.W. Award at ILYA Championship!by: David Berg, ILYA Executive Director & LBYC Member

Perhaps you’ve already met Candace Porter. If you have, none of this will come as a surprise to you. If you haven’t, let me introduce her to you.

You’ve heard of the unstoppable force vs. the immovable object paradox? Well, there are no immovable objects in the world of Candace Porter and she is an unstoppable force as an advocate, participant, parent, coach, leader, promoter and volunteer for the sport of sailing.

Her commitment to exceptional service permeates her being. The sailor, young or old, is her customer.  Whether chairing a regatta, running the kitchen, promoting her home club at Lake Beulah Yacht Club, serving in leadership roles or any of the other tasks she performs, Candace does it with a laser focus on providing her constituents with excellent, timely and friendly service. Her commitment to this goal is unmatched.

She truly cares about imparting and spreading the joy that sailing brings to the participants and the families of sailors. She has overseen the Opti No-Tears Regatta and the Opti Green Fleet for decades in the ILYA. Each year she starts each skipper’s meeting with a message of respect for fellow competitors and the sport of sailing. She has an amazing way

with our youth participants and they are better for it having sailed under her caring watchful eye and receiving her tutelage.

Candace has been a successful volunteer leader and organizer across the entire range of activities that the sport of sailing has to offer. She has served as the Commodore of the ILYA and has worked on race committees, served as a cook, a registrar, an Olympic campaign advocate, the editor and publisher of the ILYA’s weekly newsletter and was the motivating force behind Sail Strong, Sail Pink. Her continuing expectation of excellence defines and demands that from herself and those around her.

Finally, she would not have achieved the longevity and success that she has without being able to work well with her peers and constituents. She is a veritable font of information and institutional knowledge.  She brings this to bear in her committee work and is an asset to whatever group she is attached. She is an extremely versatile member of the race committee, can serve in any capacity and seamlessly melds with her coworkers.

Her volunteer hours are countless and we around her are all the better for it.

The Frank Davenport Sr. Family was honored

at the 2017 ILYA Championship Sail It Forward dinner and presentation. The Davenport Family has had longstanding Inland membership, involvement and volunteerism at both the Lake Beulah and Lake Geneva Yacht Clubs. Their family started sailing on Lake Beulah and has since branched to Geneva and across every major Inland fleet and into the Melges 20 & 24 under the guidance and encouragement of Frank Davenport, Sr. Pictured here are LBYC Members Frank and David Davenport with their father Frank Sr., and other family members and some spouses and friends at the LGYC. Sidestays’ Ethic Food Tour Recap by: Wendy Ekstrom

Thursday Aug. 17th a group of LBYC members went on the Sidestays Fall trip. This year they went on an Ethnic Tour of Milwaukee. They visited several restaurants, a spice store on Old Third Street. They went to a cheese store, Usingers Sausage store and several other places with a tour guide who talked about the history of Milwaukee and some of its restaurants. It was a fun filled tummy filled day.

Sidestays’ CornerHard to believe that we are coming to the end of the summer! Another wonderful season of fun at the lake! Last week’s outing to Milwaukee was well attended and so much fun. We certainly learned a lot about the settlement of Milwaukee and enjoyed a delightful variety of ethnic foods. Thanks so much to Karen Mueller and Erna Liebovich for their time in organizing this event!

Although Sidestays did not hold a major fund raising event this summer, our membership generously agreed to donate funds to the sailing school, to purchase needed items for the kitchen and to contribute to the cost of the club china and storage.

We are looking forward to a busy summer of 2018! Our slate of officers is nearly set and chairpersons have volunteered for the noon socials and the golf outing. Without the wonderful enthusiasm and hard work of our members we wouldn’t be as great as we are! Thanks to all!

See you at the club this weekend! - Lynn Welscher

We are looking for photos, sailing articles, developments at the LBSS and fun at social events. We are even welcoming lighter reflections on how you or your family discovered Lake Beulah and if you met your spouse and fell in love at Lake Beulah. Include your funny sailing stories. We want to know about your volunteer efforts on Beulah and in other sailing organizations.
