TORONTONIANS SPLIT ON OLYMPICS AS SUPPORT FOR BID SLIPS

September 14, 2015 (Toronto, ON) - A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll finds support for an Olympic Bid in Toronto slipping. Meanwhile, Torontonians are split when asked about funding infrastructure projects by selling the city’s minority stake of Toronto Hydro. The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll has a margin of error of +/- 1.98%, 19/20.

“Mayor John Tory continues to lead Toronto City Council in approval with 62% of Toronto residents indicating they approve of the job he is doing compared to 50% for council,” said Quito Maggi, president of Mainstreet Research. “Disapproval remains low for both the Mayor and council with just 24% disapproving of the Mayor and 3 in 10 disapproving of Council.”

“Support for a Toronto Olympic bid has slipped to 50%, down 8% since the last Mainstreet survey on this issue. Those opposed to the bid has increased by 9% to 47%. As people learn more about the benefits and costs of an Olympic bid, opinions have become more divided. A bid for 2024 may be a risky proposition and with the current climate of economic uncertainty, the city is split.”

“For Mayor Tory the political risks may not be worth it. He would need to win two more terms (2018, 2022) to reap the political windfall of hosting the 2024 Olympics,” Maggi continued.

As the Syrian refugee crisis continues, Mainstreet surveyed Torontonians on ways they are willing to help. 22% say they would make a donation, 58% would donate clothing or other items and 17% say they would consider sponsoring a refugee.

“Torontonians are ready to help in dierent ways. Ultimately, as they learn more about the requirements to sponsor a refugee many may not follow through, but what is striking is that 4 in 10 Torontonians would not rule out making a financial donation or helping with sponsorship (Not Sure). This suggests Torontonians need more information,” finished Maggi.

Regional margins of error: Downtown +/- 3.49%; Scarborough +/- 3.96%; Etobicoke +/- 4.13%; North York +/- 4.6%

Some have suggested Toronto bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Critics have said that hosting the games would be very expensive and a wasteful use of tax dollars while supporters say that it is about more than the money and Toronto already has the world-class venues and infrastructure needed to hold the Olympic games.
