About the A11 Fiveways roundaboutsignalisation scheme

In autumn 2018 we will make improvements to theA11 Fiveways roundabout. The scheme aims toreduce congestion during peak times and will takeapproximately 11 weeks to complete.

The works will deliver benefits to Highways England’sstrategic road network and will improve local accessto the A11.

This scheme is a package of short-term measures to improve congestion while a longer-term solution to upgrade the junction is being considered in a future Road Investment period, beyond 2020.

Works being carried out

Traffic lights will be installed on approaches to theA11 Fiveways roundabout from A11 north, A11south and A1101 west.

The speed limit will be reduced to 40mph on A11south bound approach towards Newmarket. Thiswill help road users, by giving them more time toreact to merging and slowing traffic.

The speed limit will be reduced to 50 mph on the A11 north approach from Thetford.

All road markings on the approaches to the round-about will be renewed. This will help toclarify which lanes vehicles need to be in whenapproaching the roundabout.

Directional signs will be relocated to give driversmore advanced notice and improve the visibility ofthe signs.

New signs will be added where required.

Traffic Management

To reduce disruption to the local community during the works, we will use a mixture of lane closures with speed restrictions and full road closures. The traffic management will change depending on what works are taking place.During full road closures traffic will be diverted via the A134, A1088 and A143.
