What is maintenance Maintenance is the process that preserves or restores a

desired state or condition of a system or facility

Maintenance process includes three major activities:Inspection

    Planned maintenance and

    Disturbance handling

    Whatis maintenance cont

Inspection is the activity of collecting informationabout the state is monitored to allow prediction orearly detection of disturbances

Planned maintenance is the activity in which elementsof the system are modified or replaced according to apre-determined schedule

Disturbance handling is the activity in which elements

of the system are modified or replaced to restore thedesired state, following a disturbance

What is robotA robot has a manipulator

There are actuators to position the arm

There may be a gripper or hand like device

    The controller is the microcomputer

The power supply may be pneumatic, hydraulic, orelectrical.

    Application in maintenanceNuclear Industry

    Characteristics:

Low frequency of the operation, Maintenance and repair require high levels of dexterity

    Radiation

The complexity of these tasks may be unpredictablebecause of the uncertain impact of a failure.

    Highways Application are :

Highway integrity management (cracksealing, pothole repair)

Highway marking management(pavement marker replacement, paint re-

striping) Highway debris management (litter bag

pickup, on road refuse collection, hazardous spill cleanup, snow removal)

Highway signing management (sign andguide marker washing, roadway advisory)

    Highway landscaping management

(vegetation control, irrigation control) Highway work zone management

(automatic warning system, lightweightmovable barriers, automatic coneplacement and retrieval)

    Power Line Maintenance

Many common maintenance operations on overheadtransmission lines are performed by human operators onlive lines. Examples of these tasks include replacingceramic insulators that support conductor wire and

opening and reclosing the circuit between poles. ROBTET teleoperated system for live-line maintenance

    developed by researchers in Spain.

A more recent robotic system for live-line maintenance hasbeen developed by Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., in

Fukuoka, Japan Laser sensors are used onboard the robot to help with

    position control.

Aircraft Servicing The size of modern multi-engine jets makes

inspection and coating removal and applicationparticularly attractivein terms of improving qualityand efficiency.

Automated stripping and painting systems are alreadyin place at a few U.S. Air Force bases. A roboticassistant for re-arming tactical fighter aircraft is beingdeveloped at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory forthe U.S. Air Force

Underwater Facilities Teleoperated robots are widely used to maintain

facilities beneath the surface of the ocean, mainly inservice of the offshore oil industry.

Applications include repairing communicationscables, pipelines, well heads, and platforms.

Teleoperators have also been deployed to clean marine

growth from power plant cooling systems to inspectand clean steam generators, perform underwaterconstruction, and to inspect and repair waterconveyance tunnels

repair operations is a robot developed by SumitomoMetal Industries, Ltd., Japan, for repairing thechamber wall of a coke oven.

Recent TrendsAutonomous robots still cannot function well in many

dynamic, and variable, environments, so theseapplications tend to require either completely humanor teleoperator solutions. Of course, environmentswith low human accessibility (because of physicalconstraints or danger) are usually good candidates forrobotic solutions. Where accessibility is low but

variability is high, teleoperators are usually best.
