Welcome!

As we began making sale preparations, I was struck by how quickly time goes by.

I hate to sell ’em. These heifer calves are our future and we believe we are headed in the right direction. We set out in the Reds to make bulls that could truly compete. We believe we’ve come a long way with Lightning and Lion Heart, but we still have progress to make in our “Pursuit of Perfection.” With beef prices where they are – and where I believe they will stay – now more than ever we need bulls weaning in that 800 to 900-lb. range and yearlings in that 1,400 to 1,600-lb. range. How else will we have 1,250 to 1,350-lb. terminal-weight steers in 12 to 14 months? Feed intake is obviously a key component in profi t but it’s nothing compared to the cost of keeping them on feed an extra 30 to 60 days.

All of this being said, the struggle is to keep your cowherd pretty and feminine, and your bulls stout and masculine yet chisel fronted. We’ve harped on feet and legs until every animal in this sale has a great set of wheels. We also believe you’ll love their udders. But as more and more of our top-notch heifers and bulls are produced via IVF, we need to stay focused on femininity, fertility and milking ability. There will come a day all too soon when a handful of bulls will sire all the beef calves that year, much like dairy or pork or poultry. But in the mean time, it is our duty to make sure the traits are there so that Red Angus may be part of those composites.

This is the deepest set of heifers we’ve raised. Top to bottom they are really impressive. I can’t pick out a favorite but I can sure talk ya through them. Cut from similar cloth, this heifer may be the sleeper. We snuck her mother out of the NILE as a bred. She went on to Reno and at least won her di-vision (maybe reserve) and did very well in Denver. She has the prettiest udder of any Angus cow I’ve ever seen, and an excellent set of hard feet. A half sister by McQueen was a sale highlight and sold to Camiel Blomme. This heifer is deep, dark red, dark footed and good legged. She’s really green but coming on strong.

Striking! If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a champion female, this might be the one. Her mother is the 2009 Lou-isville champion. We called her Buttercup, and the day she was born we knew she was special. She still dons the cover of our website. She carries herself like no other female in our herd. Her head and neck come out of her shoulder so high it’s spectacular to see her move. She’s a gorgeous uddered female with a giant dark, round foot, plus I can ride her. This heifer calf reminds me of her. This is the one that has potential to be great. She hurt herself – or a black one hurt her – shortly after her arrival from our cooperators. The last one is “the one,” unless you like this one better. This one was raised here and has been a favorite since birth. She was born unassisted on a cold day out of a Lightning daughter I acquired in a fl ush of Feddes Blockana 880 – a gorgeous cow that has an MPPA score of 105.5. I fl ushed her to Lightning, got the look, the bone and the structure. Hit her to Mulberry and “Voila!” Dark footed, huge topped, longest spine in the sale. She still catches her front track for as long as she is. Loads of rib shape. She also happens to be Stewart’s choice for bred-and-owned and mine for a cow. Majestic Reba’s Robin B21’s maternal grandmother, KRN Reba’s Robin, has perhaps had more infl u-ence than any other cow in the breed. Majestic Blockana B26 this stout heifer calf could fi t in the show ring, the feed lot, or the cow herd. Super stout, good dark food, gonna make an awe-some cow. Her mother we purchased from the Feddes program as pick of the open heifers. She’s sired by 909N and Norseman king on the bottom. Big time weaning weight, big time set of numbers and Lightning has put a set of wheels under her classed her up. I like to refer to this one as, “hiding the veggies in the Mac and cheese.” It’s all good in this one.

This could be the Firefl y we’ve been waiting on. We think she can rock the show ring and crush the scales, plus she has a super-sweet disposi-tion. As great a cow as she’s gonna be, I’d hate it if a kid didn’t get to show this one. Amazing dark foot, good legged, long neck coming out of the top of the shoulder, deep fl anked, huge hipped. The great thing about this one is she’ll make you piles of money on heifer calves or bull calves. Her brother, Majestic Superfl y A119, is working in the Heavican Genetics program in Rogers, Neb., and we are expecting great things from him. We think this May heifer calf has the potential to really come on. Out of Mahogany 56N and sired by Sideways, she has the beauty and the beast behind her. Sideways is the beauty, 56N the beast. She’s the biggest cow we’ve got – huge footed, dark red and deep. Sideways has stretched her out, prettied her up and this one’s gonna make a whale of a cow. Again, this heifer goes back to Reba’s Robin. This full sister to Lot 2 is just a June baby. We took this fi eld shot so hopefully it gives you a little bit of the idea of how much potential we think this one has. She has lots of shape and a good dark foot with plenty of heel. We’ve made a habit of identifying cows or cow families targeting them to buy or fl ush, then use Lightning to create exceptional progeny. The Lightning daughter that is the dam of Zulu Warrior is no exception. He is the culmina-tion of the mating of Forster Copprqueen 7168, the dam of UBAR Grand Prix, to Majestic Lightning 717. In turn, mated to Sideways, and here is her natural calf, Zulu Warrior. He is stout enough yet rangy enough to be fi tting of the title Zulu warrior. In fact he’s the best Sideways son we have bred and heir apparent to his sire’s great track record of producing gorgeous females. We believe females should be feminine and bulls should be masculine. There’s something innate in these two highly heritable traits that drives fertility. Mind you, Majestic Zulu Warrior B33 is only an April baby and merely four months old or so at the time this picture was taken. If you hadn’t guessed, we think he’s special!
