Welcome to Majura Football Club 2010.
With any voluntary club of our size it’s not always easy to get
housekeeping messages to everyone but a big thank you for
your continued support of match days at Dickson.
Did you know?
Dogs are not allowed at the fields
when children's sport is being
conducted.
Dickson Oval is an ACT Sportsground
law enforceable by the Rangers with
fines.
Match day set-up, pack away and Canteen.
We aim to keep the costs of playing for your child as low as
possible by utilising the parents to assist in the three tasks
listed above.
Do not leave it to the same old few in your team. If everyone
helps, everyone benefits.
Please do not park on Dickson College Ovals
Dickson College continues to ask us not to park vehicles on their
oval adjacent to the Dickson Playing Fields (next to our
Containers.) They are happy for us to use their car parks.
Technical Development
Majura Technical Working Group will be meeting on Monday 28

ACT School Sport is pleased to announce that the following Majura FC players have been selected in the PSSA Girls Squad. Congratulations to Ruth Kravis, Ali Cook and Grace Maher.
FFA Coaching Formations:
Did you know that the FFA has set a national curriculum for
football. Is your team playing the new FFA formations yet?
U8/9 =1-3-3
U10/11 = 1-3-2-3
U12 upwards = 1-4-3-3 (The three in the midfield is a triangle.)
Not sure how to implement it? Why not ask Technical Director
Paul Whittingham, or our recently trained FFA Youth Certificate
Coaches Jason Thornton, Rob Janssens, Heather Fitt for help.
If all Majura teams follow the FFA model in coming years
players will be able to discuss the game with friends and
coaches more easily, particularly when moving between teams,
clubs or rep teams. Why not start today?

Kanga Cup update
Majura 14 Girls Hurricanes after their Cup Final victory against
Woden last year
July is the month when most sensible Canberrans flee the cold
and wet of the national capital for warmer climes. But those
who love football are heading in the opposite direction from all
over the country, and even from overseas, to take part in the
biggest youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere –
the Kanga Cup.
Over 220 teams will take part this year and among them will be
a record contingent of 12 from Majura doing battle with teams
from the ACT, Queensland, NSW and even New Zealand.
This year we have 2 teams each from 10 Open and 12 Open, as
well as 1 each from 11, 13 & 14 Open and 11, 12, 14 & 16 Girls.
Majura played in the very first Kanga Cup tournament in 1993,
although we did not win our first trophies until 2007, when the
14 Girls won the Cup, and 16 Girls the Plate competition.
In 2008 the 13 Girls Hurricanes clinched our 2nd cup in a
penalty shoot-out against Tuggeranong and followed up with
the 2009 14 Girls Cup with a thrilling come from behind 2-1 win
against Woden. They will be out to make it 3 years in a row, but
will face a huge task overcoming the formidable Coastal Spirit
from New Zealand.

Kanga Cup update. (cont)
Just as prestigious are the Fair Play trophies where Majura has a
very proud record, but for most kids just taking part is the great
thrill as they play at least 5 games in a week against boys and
girls who, like them, just love football.
Matches this year will be played from July 5-9 at grounds across
the ACT, with all finals played on the Friday.
Keep up with the results at www.kangacup.com and come out
and cheer on the Majura teams as they take part in this
wonderful competition.

The Glory boys and friends were quick to grab a few Aussie flags on the weekend before their

U7 Saturday Skills Session.
U7s took a break from their training session with Majura
Technical Director Paul Whittingham to pose for a photo.
Having already played their normal Saturday game, the energy
and enthusiasm these players were putting into training
showed they clearly want more football!
Training sessions are continuing and will finish on Saturday 26
June with a session for our under 7 girls teams.
In the second half of the season, there will be additional skills
clinics run over 5 consecutive Saturdays, commencing 31 July
(same time, 11.00am to 12.00 noon).
These clinics will be available for up to 16 Majura FC players
from the under 7s (boys and girls) and is aimed at those players
who want to learn and build their individual skill base.
Under 7 Managers, please tell your players so that they can
register to attend – places are limited for each session, so it will
be first come, first served.

A group of loyal Aussie fans were spotted at Dickson Oval flying the colours.
Majura FC in the Canberra Times.
Support for Australia, and Ghana, was everywhere on Saturday. Majura FC players lead the way in the Canberra Times with Donne Zevon (Ghana fan), Dominic and Angelo Marino showing their support on the front page, and in the sport pages former Majura FC Kofi Danning (now Sydney FC) played his first game of football in Australia with Majura after arriving from Ghana when he was 7 years old U10 Tom Bigg-Wither was featured on page 5. Tom walked out with the Aussie team for the Ghana game after winning a prize for writing about his and his teams sporting behaviour at Majura FC last season. Tom explained how only one of his team-mates, Caleb, hadn’t scored all season going into the last game. Tom and his U9 team-mates decided to work hard to try and help Caleb to score. The plan was so good Caleb scored THREE!
Better still, Tom won a prize, courtesy of McDonalds, to fly to South Africa and walk out with the team before the Australia Ghana game. (Photo: Tom Bigg-Wither meets Socceroo legend Mark Schwarzer in Canberra last year and he walked out with Socceroo Captain Lucas Neill in Rustenberg, South Africa on Saturday night.)
Tom’s mother, Sandy, organized a sweep and a prize from South Africa for one of his classmates at Turner Primary. Every student chose a Socceroo and tried to pick who Tom would walk out with on the night. No doubt they were all watching with extra interest to see who would win. .

Majura FC heroes: NEVER GIVE UP!
Majura FC U13: Never Give up!
At different ends of the table, 2 Majura girls teams showed great fighting spirit to produce 2 very different, but equally inspiring results on Saturday June 19.
The Majura 13/1 Girls started the season without a number of their best players who moved into the Open team, and after 7 games without a point, and facing a team who had already beaten them 9-0, they had every reason to fear another bad result.
But in cold and windy conditions the Majura girls fought their hearts out, and against a highly drilled, and very successful Belnorth side, secured a 0-0 draw. It was a fantastic result for the team, and after claiming their first point, they now look to winning games in the weeks to come.
The Majura 16/1 Girls are in a very close fight for the lead in their competition, trailing Tuggeranong by just a point, and with every point likely to be precious, they could have collapsed in a heap when they went 2-0 down in the first 10 minutes against 3rd placed Woden at Mawson.
Instead, the girls fought back and a long range lob from Claire Sydney, and a sensational bullet into the roof of the net from Sarah Thomason had the scores level at half-time.
The second half was a great advertisement for girls football as both team gave it everything they had for the winner, before Sarah broke through 3 defenders to put a shot past the keeper in the corner.
The Majura defence then tackled itself into exhaustion to keep the win secure and claim the 3 points.
Congratulations to the 13/1 and 16/1 girls for never giving up!

The language of football by Eilis Fitt (11) Majura Mini Matildas
Body Shape: The position that the players’ bodies should be in when receiving a pass. Scanning: This is what players should do before receiving a pass; just a quick glance around so they know their surroundings and if a player is gaining on them. Positions: Positions are the places where players are supposed to stand and run. Positions help the team keep the ball, and are useful once you get to a harder level and have to work the ball more to score. Some examples of positions are centre forward, left back and right midfield. Forwards are also known as attacker or strikers, and they are the ones most likely to score. Midfield plays in the middle of the field and they bring the team together a lot. Midfield players should always be a pass apart. Defence is also known as back or sweeper and they protect the goal and push the team up. Offside: Offside is only in play for under12s and up. This is when a player on the attacking team is ahead of the last defender as one of their player’s kicks the ball. Shape: Once your team gets to playing positions, the team needs a team shape, which is also called a team formation. e.g. 3-2-3. Square ball: A square ball is a pass that a player running down the wing makes when they pass it into the middle across to another teammate or vice versa. Options: Options is what players ideally always want. An option is a player, unmarked and in a good position to receive the ball. Triangles: Every player should have triangles on the field when teams get to playing positions. A triangle is a triangle of three players that are always near each other. This way players will have more options and it will be easier to get the team working together. Transition: This is where a team has to switch from defending to attacking if they win the ball or vice versa. Counter-Attack: This is when one team is attacking and suddenly the other team makes a break out for goal. By-line: The by-line is the back line of the field. (The line the goal is on.) Keep it on the deck: To keep it on the deck is to keep the ball on the field, and to play it around nicely on the ground, passing and working as a team, not booting the ball high and playing the ball up in the air. Eye on the ball: `Keep your eye on the ball` is an expression meaning always watch the ball, and if a player is taking you on, watch the ball and not the opponent’s legs, because often players are tricked

Skin him or her: If you are going to skin someone, you are going to go past them easily and in a smooth and sure manner. Nutmeg: The nutmeg is a common, well-known trick. This is where one player softly passes the ball through her/his opponents legs before running around them and continuing play. Jockey: To jockey is to lead the player out to the side, showing them the way with outstretched arms. This is a form of tackling without touching the ball, and is a good thing to do if you are less confident in going into tackles.
Pressure (Press the ball): Pressure means to put pressure on the player with the ball, gently
harassing them and making it clear that you’re there.
Possession: Possession is the word used for keeping the ball off the opposition, and just
passing between your team and shielding it from the other team.
