TERMS AND CONDITIONS1. All bids submitted are final and irrevocable, whether submitted in person or by proxy.

Unless otherwise agreed upon, the sale of an auction lot will result in a contractual agreement between MAD Leadership Foundation and the buyer.

2. The live auction buyer shall be the person with the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer at the event. All sales are final.

3. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his/her absolute discretion, and in the case of any error or dispute, to put an item up for bidding again. The auctioneer will have no liability for doing so.

4. Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the proverbial “striking of the hammer” marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract of sale between MAD Leadership Foundation and the buyer.

5. Certain items may be subject to a reserve amount. The auctioneer has the right to withdraw any property before initiation or completion of the sale and will have no liability for doing so.

6. The silent auction buyer shall be the person with the highest offer accepted via the pre-specified auction application, by the allocated bidding cut-off time.

7. Statements by MAD Leadership Foundation in the brochure or expressed verbally or in writing elsewhere, regarding the authorship, origin, date, size, medium, images, attribution, genuineness, provenance, condition or estimated selling price of any lot are merely statements of opinion and should be used as guidance only, and are not to be relied upon as statements of definitive fact. MAD Leadership Foundation cannot be held responsible for the validity of any such statement, nor for any other errors of description or any faults of defects in any lots. All auction items are “as is, where is”.

8. If a prospective buyer gives a MAD Leadership Foundation affiliate instructions to bid on their behalf, MAD Leadership Foundation shall use all reasonable efforts to do so, provided these instructions be received no later than 24 hours before the sale, in writing explicitly stating their requirements. The prospective buyer does so, at their own risk. MAD Leadership Foundation cannot be held responsible for the loss of an item through outbidding nor can we be responsible if the item is not to the buyer’s satisfaction on taking ownership.

9. Following the sale, the buyer must provide MAD Leadership Foundation with his or her name, permanent address and contact details (email and contact number) for invoicing purposes.

10. All lots are to be paid for in full within 30 days of receipt of invoice.

11. All lots can be collected by the buyer on the night of the sale. From the time of sale, the lot will be entirely at the purchaser’s risk. The winning bidder is responsible for any and all shipping costs related to such items. Shipping is not included in the price of the auction items.

TSOKU MAELA

BARDO

ARTIST BIOTsoku Maela was born in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, South Africa, spending his childhood between the quiet town and Johannesburg until moving to Cape Town where he completed his BA in motion picture at AFDA, majoring in screenwriting, editing and directing.

He began creating conceptual self-portraiture in 2014 focusing his lens on the human psyche through platforms engaging in the spiritual, socio-political and other issues that he feels do not get enough scope in open spaces with the hope to drive conversations and act as a catalyst towards a change in perspective for young and old.

ART DESCRIPTIONThe image Bardo illustrates a state known to the Tibetan tradition as the intermediate state between after death and before the creation’s new life. In this state we are said to experience reality in its most vivid form, haunted by illusions and reflections of themselves. The creation can only move on to the next phase of their journey once they realise that these illusions are mere projections of themselves and their deepest repressed consciousness. At this point of awakening they are able to progress to a state where they choose their next rebirth into the human form.

ANDREW ORAPELENG NTSHABELE

CYCLING THROUGH THE PAST

ARTIST BIOAndrew Orapeleng Ntshabele’s passion and love for the visual arts was identified by his teachers through nursery school right up to high school. This led him to enrol at the University of Johannesburg. Andrew completed his National Diploma in Fine Arts in 2012, followed by his Bachelor of Technology degree in 2013, majoring in painting.

He participated in various group exhibitions and his most notable achievements are the painting merit award at the Ekurhuleni 2012 Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards; a commission to paint a portrait for the Exxaro portrait project in 2012; a commission to paint the Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, for Meetings Africa 2015 at the Sandton Convention Centre; and exhibiting at the Turbine Art Fair 2015.

ART DESCRIPTIONAndrew’s work focuses on urbanisation in Johannesburg.

Andrew has seen the effects that urbanisation has had on the city of Johannesburg in relation to its physical, socio-economic and political change, post-apartheid. His work deals with the negative effects of rapid urbanisation in Johannesburg and the pressures of the people he interacts with on a daily basis. He felt the need to investigate the social predicament of the city and to understand the root causes of the current inner-city decay.

Andrew’s work is a form of social commentary with the socio-economic challenges that the majority of black South Africans face in post-colonial South Africa. His paintings incorporate multiple mediums as a fusion of collage and acrylic paint. Andrew’s works are produced from photographs that he takes on his daily travels in the city.

SAYSAY.LOVE

REBIRTH

ARTIST BIOSaySay.Love retired from his successful career as an entrepreneur at the age of 50, which afforded him the luxury to focus all his efforts on becoming a visual activist and artist. What sets SaySay.Love apart in this platform is his optical handicap - not being able to see in 3D and mostly blind in his right eye, which makes it difficult for him to determine depth, distance and speed. Not constricted by societal norms, he sees life in all dimensions and relates emotionally to it. All this is reflected in his recent body of work titled “The Gift of Water”. SaySay.Love has taken it upon himself to bring awareness to the current water crisis experienced in Cape Town and donates all the proceeds of his work to charity.

ART DESCRIPTION“Rebirth, new life. Flow through my veins. Awaken me, open my eyes”.

Rebirth seeks out the beautiful convolution of nature, presenting it in emotive and mesmerising motifs that draw the viewer in. The work presents a calm and considered observation of nature, expressed through his own personal style. His work reshapes our understanding of this gift, and his colourful expressions reflect his understanding of preserving this life-binding agent that fills our rivers and seas.

The work alludes to the microscopic view of the life-force which is so often taken for granted. The image at once transports you into the depths of the cell, yet simultaneously placing you in a distant galaxy.

LIVE NANETTE (WESSELS) RANGER

DENDRITE

ARTIST BIONanette (Wessels) Ranger studied Fine Art at the University of the Free State. Nanette has been exhibiting consistently since 1987 and has participated in, and curated, many exhibitions throughout South Africa. Her work has been sold both nationally and abroad.

“I love making art because I believe that art ignites life for both the artist and the viewer. My work is exploring the connection and disconnection with all things. It is an attempt to seek connection and re-integration for myself, and others and to reflect on the metaphysical power that close communion with the natural world offers humanity. I do not seek to defy nature, but rather to investigate the possibility of a new paradigm of re-integration at both a physical and psychological level” – Nanette (Wessels) Ranger.

ART DESCRIPTIONDendrites are microscopic tree-like structures that transmit nerve impulses in the body. Without them touch, sight, sound, movement and consciousness would be impossible. They are a physical mechanism for our connection to the world.

It is fascinating, too, that tree-like structures occur at all scales throughout nature from the microscopic to the most massive living organism on earth.

GAWIE JOUBERT

YEARNING

ARTIST BIOGawie Joubert is a visual artist and illustrator and is known for his ethereal ink and charcoal drawings that evolve around complex connections between humans and nature. His current work can broadly be described as an experimental process, where he masterfully surrenders control to allow his medium to lay the foundation for his art-making. Fuelled by his belief that humans are dependent on nature for psychological and physical well-being, Gawie creates artworks mostly depicting morphed figures and greenery. These artworks simultaneously explore the artist’s own interest in the fluidity of identity.

ART DESCRIPTIONYearning is part of Gawie’s Biophillia range, is his understanding of himself in relation to nature and memory.

Based on his early childhood memories, the artist constructs charcoal figures that appear to be made of bark, twigs and leaves. These ethereal figures are a catalyst for his own identity. The artist interprets the fluid manner in which one’s identity is formed as vines – climbing and creeping over these figures. Much like personal identity, the growth and transformation of a plant is ever-changing. He believes that his adult identity was formed by these memories of experiences from his childhood and they will always be embedded in him.

OWEN CLAASSEN

BOY WITH KITE

ARTIST BIOOwen Claasen, affectionately known as the Karoo Michaelangelo was born and resides in Zoar in the Klein Karoo. Since early childhood, he was very crafty and made the best toy cars for his friends using scrap metal and wire. In high school, he had Woodwork as one of his subjects but soon discovered that he was actually much more interested in Welding. Owen worked for different Welding Companies and in his spare time he made metal figurines, candle holders, and bedside lamps, using themes from his own cultural background.

ART DESCRIPTIONOwen’s early childhood memories and the known familiar world around him serve as inspiration for his artwork. His work can be seen in many of the prominent art galleries in South Africa. His work has a colloquial emphasis, beautifully depicting life inspired by the Karoo platteland.

VIVIEN KOHLER

PAPER FLOORS ARE STREETS

ARTIST BIOVivien Kohler is an experimental mixed-media painter based in Johannesburg. He received his National Diploma in Fine Arts from the Ruth Prowse School of Art and Design in Cape Town, 2000.

The concept of liminality, the liminal city and its people, lies at the core of Vivien’s work, which explores migration, marginalisation and displacement in the urban landscape of post-apartheid South Africa. Vivien constructs two and three dimensional assemblage pieces. Through appropriating discarded material, painting naturalistic images and detailed replications of material he articulate challenging social and economic circumstances that affect those on the periphery. Fascinated by man’s ability to transcend ‘the conceptual decay’, he captures, with gentle rawness, the complexity of human disposition.

ART DESCRIPTION“I once knew this family on the Cape Flats who received an eviction notice and were forced to move out by the end of that week. I also knew a family who were moving to a larger home and also had to vacate their premises within a week. Even though these two circumstances looked rather similar, the emotions surrounding the events were vastly different. I helped both of them pack up their belongings, and, still to this day, my emotional recollection of these two occurrences are worlds apart even though they didn’t look much different. The one family ended up on the street for a period, while the other family moved to another street.” - Vivien Kohler

LIVEPAMELA STRETTON

NUTRITIONAL VALUE

ARTIST BIOPamela hails from a printmaking background. She obtained a master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Cape Town in 2005. Her subject matter originated as a self-study focusing on feminine beauty ideals inspired by a past battle with anorexia.

Her work has evolved gently in a few directions exploring, amongst other things, notions of consumerism, women’s roles in society, narcissism and plays on social media. From soft feminine nudes, simple clean objects, to larger-than-life portraits, her imagery is quiet and contemplative yet bold and powerful at the same time.

She is represented by galleries and art consultancies in America, the United Kingdom and Europe, and her work appears in corporate and private collections worldwide.

ART DESCRIPTIONPamela’s work explores a dynamic play between two elements, involving, not only the visual binary of scale, but also the merging of digital photographic print mediums with handcrafted reworking.

This work is part of an early series of nude self-portraits focusing on feminine body issues and eating disorders. The coding makes reference to food ingredient labels, highlighting the notion of food obsessions and calorie counting.

LIVE ADRIAAN DIEDERICKS

LINEATION BUST I

ARTIST BIOAdriaan Diedericks is a South African sculptor based in Strand, Cape Town. He grew up in rural Piketberg and his upbringing there has had a great impact on his work. After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from Stellenbosch University in 2012, he did an apprenticeship with Lionel Smit from 2013 until the end of 2014.

Adriaan was a SASOL New Signatures finalist in 2010 and 2014 and a PPC YCSA finalist in 2013. His work has been acquired over the past four years by people such as Christo Wiese, Keith Kirsten (international horticulturist) and Ranjit Singh, as well as places such as Cavalli Stud Farm and NAC VIP Lounge at Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg.

His work can also be found in private collections around the world - New York, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Holland, Los Angeles, Australia, Las Vegas, Italy, Belgium, Germany, London, Canada, South Africa and Barbados.

ART DESCRIPTIONLineation Bust I subverts the features of the classical bust - an anti-monument if you like. The head is tentatively attached, almost floating and ghost-like. The piece speaks to the question of justice, as well as the rise and fall of leaders in society.

LIVEMARIEKE PRINSLOO-ROWEMARIE STILL DANCING AFTER FOURTEEN

ARTIST BIOMarieke completed a BA Honours in Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria, graduating in 1999. She has completed numerous commissions and her work is represented in the Johannesburg Art Gallery as well as in several public sites, private collections and galleries.

The primary focus and preoccupation of Marieke body of work is and has been an exploration of the female form. She is intrigued by the way in which sculptures mimic the three dimensionality of a human presence and thus the slightly surreal dialogue it invites – human to human look-alike. She also loves the capacity that sculpture has to freeze the transient into sculpted reality keeping it “alive” long after moments and persons have changed.

ART DESCRIPTION“Marie Still Dancing after Fourteen” is inspired by the famous Degas ballerina, yet it has been as though taken some years later. Here she stands shyly, thoughtfully, before taking to stage. In this sculpture the young ‘Marie’ has come of age - she has all the dreams of the fourteen-year-old girl who aspired to be a dancer - but now they are becoming her reality.

LIVESIZWE KHOZATHE LITTLE THINGS GIVE YOU AWAY

ARTIST BIOSizwe Khoza matriculated in 2010 from Nkumbulo Comprehensive School in Mozambique and during his matric year attended Saturday classes at Artist Proof Studio. Sizwe graduated from Artist Proof Studio in 2012. In 2013 he was offered a residency at William Humphrey Art Gallery in Kimberley under the mentorship of the late Dumisani Mabaso. He was then offered an internship at Artist Proof Studio and in 2014 started teaching printmaking for first and second year students full time.

Twice a year he travels to Mozambique to take photographs and, upon return, creates new works inspired by his visit back home. Sizwe specializes in painting, monotype and combined printmaking techniques, and recently had exhibitions with Artist Proof Studio and other various galleries.

ART DESCRIPTIONSizwe’s work started as a comparison between a game of chess and his background. In this game we hear mostly about the king and how it should be protected, and we tend to then forget all other pieces and their meaning.

He focuses on portraits to tell the story from the eyes and facial expressions. He uses monotypes (once off) as a way to express the fact that life itself never repeats, but the actions do repeat, almost like a rhyme. As in the game of chess, you can’t make the same move twice but the game will be played again and again and similar actions and consequences will be reiterated.

LIVEMANDY COPPES-MARTIN

ONLY WISE

ARTIST BIOMandy Coppes-Martin studied photography at the Vaal Triangle Technikon and began a diploma in Fine Arts in 1993 at the University of Johannesburg. In 2004 she completed her master’s degree in Fine Arts (cum laude). In 2012 she became a full-time artist producing work in paper and silk. Her works “Trembling Giant” and “Virgin Pulp” were awarded the runner-up prize in the 2012 Sasol New Signatures competition. These two works are currently housed in the Sasol collection. She has exhibited in numerous group shows in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and in Belgium and the Philippines.

ART DESCRIPTIONMandy is greatly informed by the physical world and uses mostly natural materials such as paper, hemp and silk as a medium of expression.

Most of her work is thin or ethereal in nature. The transparency of the work, and the shadows that fall from the images, complete and solidify the relationship that exists between the work, its environment and her.

“The drawings in silk are typically of the human form and our connection with the physical world. The very nature of the silk worm in many ways is similar to the human condition. Silk has been a revered fibre for centuries and has been smuggled, kept secret and stolen. It is spun from an insect that purges and feeds for days in order to produce something that will protect it only for a few days so that it can be allowed to grow into something that has no eyes or mouth and that can neither drink nor eat. It continues to mate, lay eggs and pass away. What is left is something beautiful but rather useless in terms of its natural surroundings.” - Mandy Coppes-Martin

LIVEELIZABETH BALCOMB

YOUNG GIRL

ARTIST BIOElizabeth Balcomb is a self-taught artist. She has a diploma in Nature Conservation, and worked for seven years in environmental education. The deep empathy born of her studies and her many hours spent in wild places has a huge influence on her work. She has been a full time artist for six years now, working mainly in sculpture, and her pieces are sought after for private collections. Her work is on show in the various Everard Read Galleries, and a three-meter-tall piece was bought by the Pretoria Art Museum. She won the Sasol New Signatures Award in 2014 and is one of South Africa’s up and coming young artists with a very promising career ahead of her.

ART DESCRIPTION“Animal-human figures in some art traditions symbolize animal-like characteristics in humans that are often seen as negative, such as aggression, passivity or greed. My pieces, like the therianthropic figures in San paintings, open a window between every day and spiritual worlds, and between the realms of the living and the dead. They explore the relationship between human and animal worlds, suggesting that identity is fluid, mysterious and beautiful, and that consciousness is a common condition, not the sole attribute of human beings - the question of where does animal end and human begin. The female aspect of my work highlights the vulnerability and sensitivity of both human and animal beings.” - Elizabeth Balcomb

LIVEZOLILE PHETSHANE

PAGE 32

ARTIST BIOZolile Phetshane is widely known for his abstract colour fields and expressive works in pastels and paint. He obtained an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand and later joined the Artist Proof Studios in Johannesburg. Zolile has taken part in numerous art competitions, including King Kong; ABSA L’ Atelier; and Spier Art Contemporary. He has also participated in more than forty local and international exhibitions and his works have been widely collected in private and public collections.

ART DESCRIPTIONWhilst studying at Wits University, Zolile’s work was influenced by 1920s music – an influence that is still prevalent is his more recent works. Simultaneously, his work comments on religion, politics and daily consumerism. Zolile’s colour fields are littered with objects and numbers, as tools which make sense of his private world. Through painting, drawing and scratching, he creates order and processes these subconscious thoughts and feelings into each work. By so doing, his objects and numbers mediate the viewer from their reality to his own interpretation of his surroundings. He uses recognisable objects to draw the viewer into his surreal world. The artist works with many layers of solid colours in pastel, creating colourful abstract artworks. Reminiscent of great abstract masters, like Pollock, and Miro’s intuitive technique, Zolile Phetshane’s works give the viewer an intimate glimpse of life through his eyes.

LIVE MARKE MEYER

WITHOUT A TRACE OF TIME

ARTIST BIOMarke Meyer is essentially a poet at heart. Having abandoned pen and paper in exchange for space itself, he now uses sculpture to create his own unique, quirky concoction of ‘visual poetry’. Marke has specialised in figurative sculpture from wine-glass size to life-size pieces. The value of each piece is guaranteed by the fact that editions are all limited to fifteen casts only.

Marke has studied art privately with his passion being in all things figurative. Sculpture and photography became his tools to explore the human figure.

His work is available in many South African galleries. His pieces have travelled abroad to North America, Central America, South America, United Kingdom, Europe, Israel, Poland, New Zealand and Australia.

ART DESCRIPTIONWithout a trace of time speaks of a willful determination, a yearning intention and an uninhibited release.

LIVE GREATJOY NDLOVU

SO DEEP

ARTIST BIOGreatjoy Ndlovu was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and currently works from August House studios in Johannesburg. He has been enjoying a steady rise into art-world prominence within South Africa, with exhibitions at national art fairs and galleries. His current body of work focuses on portraiture and figurative themes. The artist explores a variety of materials and techniques to develop his unique, post- expressionistic style that is set to make him one of the sought after African artists to achieve international acclaim. Greatjoy expresses his inner emotional world rather than depicting an external reality. His work starts from light-hearted, experimental sketches that develop into large scale, detailed works, or even an entire series, without losing the experimental element that so characterises his work.

ART DESCRIPTIONThere is a range of essential human emotions here that cannot be expressed in abstract and conceptual art. The figures suggest a mixture of wonder, mourning, hope and hues of happiness. Splashes of primal colour in contrast to subtle, earthy shades, and the uncomplicated body language of subjects, seem to express the inner tension of an entire continent, torn between a traditional lifestyle from the past and a fast paced, hi-tech now.

LIVE MBONGENI BUTHELEZI

BOY RUNNING

ARTIST BIOSouth African born Mbongeni Buthelezi spent most of his time from a young age sifting through piles of garbage at his local dump site to make art.

“I grew up in a very poor home, and so I couldn’t afford any art materials,” Mbongeni remembers. “I knew that I couldn’t give up my dream just because of my circumstances. If anything, it pushed me towards thinking differently.”

His use of waste plastic, comments on the tensions created between plastic’s functional role and the threat to our planet if discarded without proper thought and planning. His use of such material also comments on the physical decay of the townships, the references to general social and political impoverishment, the flaws in opportunities and alternatives, that he observes in South Africa.

Mbongeni’s works have been exhibited internationally, including the Museum of African Art in New York, Goch Museum in Germany and Prague Biennale.

ART DESCRIPTION‘Boy running’, is a part of body of black and white works inspired by everyday life around Kliptown in Soweto.

LIVE ANTON SMIT

BATSHEBA

ARTIST BIOAnton Smit is widely revered for his monumental sculptures. They evoke themes of suffering, reconciliation, glory and sublimation. Anton’s works grace public and private collections countrywide and internationally.

The secret to his success could be attributed to his courage and determination to forge ahead in the face of great difficulty.

“Creation continues incessantly through the medium of man,” Anton believes. “Man himself then is mouthpiece, medium and meaning all in one, and his challenge as an artist is to create himself over and over again, finding new connotations and new concepts in given shapes, figures and faces.

Man emulates and assimilates nature, producing poetry in word and form.”

SILENT HANNELIE COETZEE

LATIA MCCARTHY II (MAP)

ARTIST BIOHannelie Coetzee is a Johannesburg-based visual artist. Hannelie leads a site-responsive practice, often taking people on walkabouts in the city to help connect the dots of the society we live in. She believes her ‘open source’ practice will grow an audience that appreciates art whilst contributing to environmental awareness.

ART DESCRIPTIONWith Watermense/Water people, Hannelie focused on the use and abuse and distribution of water. She walked along the natural streams crisscrossing throughout Johannesburg. In the process, she interacted with the individuals and communities who were there in one way or another. She documented their stories and photographed them in their surroundings. These images are formed through engravings of portraits on discarded doors, stencils on found-maps, woodblocks (and prints) made from old scaffolding planks, amongst other mediums. Through recycling discarded doors from regenerated buildings in Johannesburg, Hannelie aims viewers to rethink how mankind will live with limited natural resources in the future.

CHONAT GETZ

ANGEL

ARTIST BIOChonat Getz works mainly in the media of printmaking and sculpture. When making prints, her preference is for hard ground etchings, dry point or relief prints. Sculpturally she works with bronze, glass and various metals, often combining them in a single artwork.

Chonat was formerly a mathematics lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand for thirty years. Drawing on her expertise in mathematics, she helped to create a popular interest and involvement in mathematics by elucidating the nexus between mathematics and traditional African craft objects.

ART DESCRIPTIONAngel looks at the dichotomy between religion and science.

How science has had to struggle to gain credence in a world enmeshed in conservative doctrine. Even in the 20th century there has been controversy over many of the new developments in atomic physics.

SILENTCHARMAINE HAINESSWIMMER WITH BLUE TRUNKS

ARTIST BIOCharmaine Haines is established in the South African ceramics scene. Her work forms part of numerous art collections and has been selected to represent South Africa on international exhibitions.

In 2001, Charmaine vacated her position as lecturer in Ceramic Design at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to devote herself to her own work. In 2002 she relocated to the small Eastern Cape Karoo village of Nieu Bethesda where she established a successful studio and gallery. Here she found renewed inspiration for her work in this adopted environment, which she describes as ‘sympathetic’- allowing for a more direct relationship with materials and, consequently, being increasingly in touch with her expressive self.

ART DESCRIPTIONWorking within the realm of figurative clay, Charmaine uses both abstract and stylised symbols and motives to embellish both her sculptural and utility forms.

“Fish and birds have always been part of my iconography. Together with my portraits they’ve become autobiographical design elements that repeat themselves throughout my work. This is further evident in my most recent series which incorporates fish and bird elements, not only because of their decorative quality, but also because they add both a narrative and mythical presence to the sculptural pieces.” - Charmaine Haines

JACO VAN SCHALKWYKLULLAY, LULLAY, MY DEAR MOTHER

ARTIST BIOJaco van Schalkwyk was born in Benoni, South Africa, and grew up in the faith home, Jatniël: Headquarters of the Latter Rain Mission International. It is this background which informs his view and interpretation of society and the landscape, which is the foundation of his body of work.

Jaco was a finalist in the 2011 Absa L’Atelier Award and, in 2013, won a merit award in this prestigious national competition. Residency awards include the New York Art Students League (2008); Kunst: Raum Sylt Quelle, Germany (2014); and Goethe Institut, Yangon/Myanmar, Indonesia (2017) in collaboration with the Sylt Foundation.

He was selected in 2015, by the University of Johannesburg to attend the 6th International Beijing Biennale in China.

He has participated in numerous exhibitions and is represented in several collections: the Reserve Bank of South Africa, Barclays, RMB, the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, the Ellerman

Collection and the Pretoria Art Museum.

ART DESCRIPTION“Lullay, lullay...my dear mother” explores the intertwined nature of faith, art and the human condition. The fluctuations in social codes and norms are depicted as fragmented narratives and visual allegories representative of pivotal moments in individual lives. Such is the case in these two iconic works, where a dialogue is created between mother and son. Lullabies are an ancient way to settle babies to sleep, and to comfort and protect them from evil forces.

The Middle English lullaby “Sing now mother...” a dialogue between mother Mary and Christ, serves as inspiration for these artworks.

The artist makes use of found objects and expressive ornamentation to question the empty gorgeousness of commerce of our age, starting already in infancy. Could modern day consumerism therefore be a new religion?

ARTIST BIOAnnamarie Janse van Rensburg sees herself as “a Karoo girl with paint in her veins.” She matriculated from Oudtshoorn High School during 1990 and studied paint effects after school.

Today, she is a contemporary artist and works with acrylic medium on both canvas and board.

ART DESCRIPTION“The painting Grandma’s Blanket was painted to remind us of growing up. It creates a nostalgic feeling. I am a Christian and, therefore, I have Christian symbolism in all my work. The house is the focus on the piece and is symbolic of Jesus who is our safe house, the yellow colour around the house and on the blanket is symbolic of the Holy Spirit, the blue represents heaven, green our growth in faith and purple the colour of holiness - every crochet square is a year of our lives.” - Annamarie.

ARTIST BIOBanele Khoza was born in Swaziland. In 2008 he moved to South Africa and was schooled there. Until 2017 Banele lectured Drawing and Art Theory at the Tshwane University of Technology. He is now a full-time artist based in Pretoria. In 2015 and 2016 he was a top 100 finalists in He L’Atelier competition and in 2017 he was awarded the SA Taxi Foundation Art Award (overall winner) and the Gerard Sekoto Award for Note Making.

ART DESCRIPTIONThe work questions why should things be in order?

This is after realising that not everyone gets what they want at the same pace or at the time that it ought to be.

The social construct/ mindset is that once you are done with university, the job comes, followed by meeting ‘the one’, marriage, children and so on.

Unfortunately, it is not the case for most people and the pressure does not seem to subside- so why should things be in order?

SILENT DYLAN LEWIS

P007 LEOPARD STUDY

ARTIST BIODylan Lewis lives and works in the Winelands town of Stellenbosch. Born into an artistic family, with a sculptor father, an architect great-grandfather, and both a mother and grandmother who painted, Dylan followed in the family tradition. He began his career as a painter and later turned his hand to sculpture, now his dominant medium. His international career spans two decades and includes exhibitions in Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Houston and San Francisco, as well as numerous shows and events in London.

ART DESCRIPTIONFor months before starting to sculpt, Dylan spends countless hours observing and sketching his subject from life. He finds that it is essential to draw and sketch in front of the living, breathing subject as he observes, smells and senses it, in its presence, in order to capture and communicate its palpable vitality. It is while drawing that Dylan makes sense of the form before him, and it is the way in which he imprints that form onto his mind’s eye. He has always chosen not to work from photographs, feeling that they disconnect him from the present.

He regards the big cats as archetypal symbols of wilderness.

Tshepo was also the first winner of the inaugural SA Taxi Foundation Art Award in 2015, as well as being the recipient of the Robert Sterling Clark Fellowship Award in 2013 by Vermont Studio Centre; and a mentor for the David Kolaone Mentorship Award for the FNB Joburg Art Fair in 2014.

His work has been in numerous art fairs including International Artists’ Workshop, Thupelo as well as FNB Johannesburg Art Fair, Cape Town Art Fair and Turbine Art Fair.

ART DESCRIPTIONTshepo takes as his starting point the political, cultural and economic impact on people in a multicultural society. He is intrigued by how these individuals exist within a socio-economic structure, the way in which they create a social hierarchy, physical and psychological

conditions, which influence and shape one’s identity.

These works unfold in figurative and non-figurative scenes on un-stretched canvas. The work acts as a catalyst for a dialogue between different communities. The dialogue is continued from the subject to the artist, and finally to the viewer. The large-scale formats encompass the viewer as part of a continuation of the composition. Tshepo adjusts and deconstructs these shapes, forms and lines to create a new composition. Human form disintegrates into line and mark making. These deconstructed lines question the recognisable structures of society, hierarchy and our place in the world. His ability to select, magnify and isolate specific issues, forms and imagery, allows him to confront the viewer with a possible new reality, turning existing structures and hierarchies on their heads.

SILENT ANIEK NIEUWENHUIS

PRACTICES OF LOOKING

ARTIST BIOAniek Nieuwenhuis specialised in drawing as a medium from grade ten onwards. In 2014, she explored the practice of art conservation at The South African Institute for Heritage Science and Conservation and worked at Warren Editions, a fine art printing studio in Cape Town. She is now a Cape Town based artist, currently busy with her final year at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts. One of her majors was photography, in which she often focused on the cross-examination of the socially agreed upon definitions of normalcy and what it means to those who are considered abject according to set standards. Aniek interrogates these issues through the investigation of self-representation, while regularly employing the motif of skin as a visual marker of difference.

ART DESCRIPTIONThe “Practices of Looking” interrogates the role of scientific images in societal understandings and interpretations of mental states.

Her works are a direct critique of a 1983 article published in Vogue that hints at the “othering” of people who deviate from the “norm”. With brain scans making their way into popular media and holding a great amount of cultural power, this publication depicted “designated brain types” assisted in the process of reading “other”.

“I was diagnosed with depression when I was fifteen or sixteen years old. It made me feel different, a little broken - even when no one else knew about it. This body of work is about realising that I shouldn’t have to feel this way. It is about recognising how visual media and medical imagery can affect how mental illness is framed. It affects how we label others and ourselves.” - Aniek

SILENT VINCENT READ

KILLER WHALE BREACHING

ARTIST BIOVincent Read has always been a close observer of the outdoors and every bit of spare time he had was spent in the hills or along the rivers of the family farm in Zimbabwe. The unavailability of art materials at the time meant that he worked exclusively in pencil as a youngster and all through his schooling. Pencil remains his medium of choice as it is an extremely direct medium which satisfies his desire to express the deep contrasts and textures of his subjects. Vincent aims to capture those moments which represent the essence of the African outdoor experience. He is inspired by the textures of nature and pencil allows him to incrementally, and sometimes painstakingly, carve those textures out of his paper. Each piece is a representation of his own personal experience and he will always endeavour to experience everything that he draws.
