(so, you have now two computers - one wth xp/vsta nstaed and one wth NO CD-ROM)- An nstaaton CD of Wndows XP or Vsta.$rocedure %&or cop'ing ($ to USB and con)guring USB &or installing ($*1. extract usb_prep8 and bootsect.2.Double click usb_prep8+c,d In usb_prep8 foder. A command prompt w open.3. Press any key to contnue. - $e.oUSB window w open;4. Don/t change an'thing in the $e.oUSB window0 1ust click 2Start3+ Formattng of your USB w then start. It w ony take a few seconds.5. D" 4". close the two windows (PetoUSB and usb_prep8).Now open a new co,,and pro,pt by typng "cmd" n the Start->Run box. In ths NEW command prompt, go to the drectory where bootsect.exe s saved. Now type "bootsect.exe /nt52 R:".(for win 7 see at the end changes needed to the above command and bootsect) Change "R" wth the etter drve drectory of your USB drve. NOTE: When runnng the bootsect.exe command you cannot have any wndows open dspayng the content of your USB stck. If a went we you shoud see "Bootcode was successfuy updated on a targeted voumes." Now cose ths command prompt (St, Do not cose usb_prep8).6. Now cose PeToUSB wndow. You shoud see the usb_prep8 command ke ths;7. Now you need to enter the correct nformaton for numbers 1-3.$ress 5 and then enter+ A foder browse wndow w open for you to browse to the ocaton of you XP setup es (aka your cdrom drve wth xp cd n t)$ress 6 and enter a letter NOT currenty assgned to a drve on your PC, say T$ress 7 and enter the dri8e letter o& 'our USB stick$ress 9 to start the process+8. Ths w take around 15 mnutes, dependng on the speed of your USB. In my case, t took around 30 Mnutes.11. Set USB as your prmary boot devce. For EEE PC, f t dd not boot on the USB after dong ths, there s an opton n the BIOS where you can change the prmary and secondary memory, set USB as the prmary. When dong ths, I aso changed the OS nstaaton from "nshed" to "start" |ust to make sure that the nstaaton w work.2. On the startup menu you have two optons, select option nu,ber &or text,ode setup.3. From ths pont on, t s |ust ke any other wndows XP nstaaton. When prompt, deete a the partton, ncudng the one wth abeed "BIOS" for EEE-PC. Recreate the prmary partton on your EEE pc and format t usng NTFS. (NOTE! If you dont see your computres HD to the st dsabe AHCI SATA moden bos and set t to IDE)4. Once the text mode porton of setup s compete, the computer w reboot. .his ti,e0 boot into the :UI ,ode+5. There s more than one way to accompsh ths task.You can do the whoe process manuay,(Whch I w demonstrate and document n a moment.) or you can downoad a too and automate the whoe process and have the benet of usng .ISO mages.The automated process does not warrant a bog post. Downoad the Wndows 7 USB/DVD downoad too foow the 4 step process and you are n busness (at east wth wndows7, I have not honesty tested the too to see f you can nstaother OSs.)The manua process for budng a USB drve to be used for operatng system nstaatons s as foows. 1.Get a USB Drve of sumcent sze to contan the OS nstaaton es you desre to nsta.(If you were gong to nsta Wndows 7 ths drve wou dneed to be at east 4 GB n sze)2.Make sure the drve s competey empty of ts contents.(There shoud be absoutey nothng on t, f there s and you want to keep ths stuh you need to move t esewhere now.)3.Pug your USB drve nto a USB sot on your computer. 4. Make certan the drve s recognzed, make a note of the drve etter.Mne happens to be E:\5.Go to the start menu and USING ADMINISTRATOR CREDENTIALS open a command prompt.I rght ccked on command prompt and chose to Run As Admnstrator.6.Once your command prompt s open you are gong to run a seres of commands usng the DskPart utty.Type DISKPART and ht Enter The output form dsk part w ook ke the mage 7.Once DskPart s open you need to decde whch Dsk s your USB drve.By defaut your nterna hard dsk was assgned the rst ordna dsk number whch s 0.f you have any addtona nterna dsks they w be assgned then ext ordna numbers 1, 2 etc.In my system and probaby yours too I ony have one nterna dsk and so Im pretty condent that my USB drve s gong to be assgned DIsk1.however we need to be certan so we type the foowng command.Type ?IS. DIS= and ht EnterAs you can see the output of the Lst Dsk command shows each of the assgned dsks.In ths case you can see my nterna hard dsk and the USB dsk.Make sure youverfy the abe of the dsk wth the sze of your USB drve.In my case the USB dsk s n fact DISK 1.8. Now that we have DskPart runnng and we have dented the USB dsk we are gong to run a seres of commands.Each command s entered and run untt s competed before executng the next command.For smpcty sake I w document each commandn order of operaton and then show the output of the commands n a snge mage. Type Select Disk 5 and then ht EnterType Cean and then ht EnterType Create Partton Prmary and then ht EnterType Seect Partton 1 and then ht EnterType Actve and then ht EnterType Format FS=NTFS and then ht EnterType Assgn and then ht EnterType EXIT and then ht Enter9.Keep the command prompt open because we arent nshed qute yet.Whe we have the drve prepped we dont actuay have anythng on t to nsta.At ths pont you need to put the DVD of whatever t s you want to nsta nto your DVD drve.I am gong to assume you are nstang a wndows operatng system.If that s the case you w go back to you command prompt and change to the DVD drve to a drectory caed BOOT on the DVD. Type D: cd boot and then ht EnterType Bootsect.exe /nt60 E: and then ht Enter10.Now your USB drve s ready for acton.|ust one ast step.Usng Wndows Exporer go to the DVD and copy ALL of the es to the USB drve. In my case the e copy took about 23 mnutes gve or take a few.Once the ecopy s compete you have a USB drve that s ready to nsta operatng systems. At ths pont you must be certan that the BIOS on the devce that you are gongto be nstang to has been congured to boot from the usb devce.I put t rstn the boot order.Other than that one sma change to the hardware you are ready to go.Happy nstang!
