Each year twenty-seven thousand children are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
W-K-N-O’s Jennifer Ryans reports that there is still a little magic left in the world for children
and teenagers who suffer from life-threatening illnesses.
(TAPE BEGINS) RYANS: The Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission is to grant the wishes of
children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope,
strength and joy. Board Member Kendall Shull explains the excitement that comes from
granting a wish.
Shull: If you see the sparkle in their eye and the way they perk up when they’re thinking about
this wish and we get to help make that dream come true and we help provide these memories for
these kids.
RYANS: Kendall Shull says that we do not nearly have the funding to grant every child’s wish.
So many children are put on waiting lists and may never get the chance to live to see their wish
granted. The Make-A-Wish Foundation needs you.
The first 100 callers to call 1-800-WKNO or go to our website www.wkno.com and donate will
receive your choice of sports tickets, cookware or electronics. Also, each person to donate will
be put into a grand prize drawing to win a new car. Let’s share the power of a wish!

A little boy’s life will be changed forever after a foundation
and local business make his dream come true.
The Sellers family cannot thank Jordan Bikes and The
Make-A-Wish Foundation enough. Both are responsible
for sending joy to Shane Sellers who turns four next month.
Sarah Miller shows us how Shane’s dream really did come
true.
Shane Sellers was born with a rare medical condition called
Aicardi-Gutierrez Syndrom. This rare genetic disorder,
which affects parts of the brain and bone, prevents Shane
from walking.
Seeing Shane not being able to walk was very difficult,
especially since he had to watch all of his friends run
around and play. At the hospital he always would ask us,
when can I finally play with my friends?
That is when Make-A-Wish Foundation got involved.
Shane Sellers wished to have his very own bike. So,
Shane’s parents decided to seek out local help. Jordan Bikes
jumped on board to build a bike perfect for the little boy.
The Bike they created especially for Shane is what they call
the “Freedom Cycle”. They discovered that this cycle
would provide Shane with more mobility and would enable
him to gain enough strength in his legs so that he may
someday walk. His new bike would also allow him the
simple joy of riding a bicycle with friends-truly a wish that
would keep on giving!

Celebration of Wishes Granted
(Phoenix, Arizona)- May 25, 2011- After thirty-two years of existence, The Make-A-Wish
Foundation celebrates their 300,000 wish this year.
To celebrate this achievement, The Make-A-Wish Foundation will hold a meet and greet event at
the chapter’s local Applebee’s restaurants on June 30, 2011 from 5 p.m.- 9 p.m. Wish recipients
will be there along with their families to share their stories and inform people of what they are
currently doing. Anyone is welcome to attend and Applebee’s will be donating fifty percent of
dinner and take out sales to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
From black tie events, walks and galas, The Make-A-Wish Foundation aims to raise as much
money possible to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich
the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Without the continuous support of kind
donors, the Foundation would not be able to grant the wishes of these children.
About the Make-A-Wish Foundation: Founded in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers
helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is one of the
world’s leading children’s charities, with 64 chapters in the United States and its territories. With
the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a
wish every 40 minutes. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit wish.org

Dear Roxy:
We would like to take full responsibility as an organization for the confusion that occurred
during Daniel’s wish. The Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission is to remain steadfast, with
children of the past, present and future to have an opportunity to share the power of a wish®.
We would also like to bring to your kind attention that, each wish takes months to plan and if one
small detail is left out than an issue is more problematic to arise. Unfortunately, there was a
minor miscommunication among the manager I spoke with compared to the manager who was
working when you and your son went to the store to get fitted for a suit. This is an issue we
could not fix at the time but we have implemented changes to make certain that this mix up does
not happen again. Since then, we have ensured that the name of the manager who approved the
donation is to be included in the wish packet and they are to be contacted 3-5 days prior to the
wish taking place to remind them of the wish and of any changes.
I appreciate your patience and we here at Make-A-Wish want to ensure that you and your son
experience the hope, strength and joy that can truly come from a wish. With that being said,
your son’s wish granters will be in contact within the next week to share some surprises they
have for Daniel. Tuxedo Junction has also agreed to include another free suit when you go back
in June because of the manager’s mix up.

Scenario:
Congress will pass the taxed donation law that will prohibit businesses and individuals from receiving tax exemption on charitable donations. If a donation is made, the donor will then be taxed on the donation.
May 4, 2011
Employee Communications- Letter from the CEO
As of May 4, 2011 Congress has passed a law that prohibits individuals and businesses from receiving tax
deductions for charitable donations. This new law will make businesses and individuals think twice about
who they are donating to, if they decide to donate at all.
The new law will become active by August 1, 2011 and is said that the government is in a time where
they rely on businesses and individuals tax dollars to function and retrieve itself from the debt it is in.
They hope that this will only be a temporary law but they have not made a decision on how long the law
will stay active for.
I wanted to inform you all of this before it comes out to press. You will be seeing articles in the paper
and at this time we will continue to surge through this by voicing to others the importance of wish
granting. Continue living out the mission of the Foundation and I will leave you with this:
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that
tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”
-Thich Nhat Hanh
“Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else
would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.”
-Unknown
“Joy is increased by spreading it to others.”
-Robert Murray McCheyne
Hope, strength and joy. It’s hard to imagine enriching the human experience of a wish with one and not
the other. Together, these words have served as a culmination of our mission to grant the wishes of
children with life threatening medical conditions. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40
minutes and has granted more than 207, 260 wishes in the United States since its inception. Let’s keep it
up!!

CROSSMAN TODAY

Sarah Green (right) with her older sister singing songs from High
School Musical as she receives her chemo treatment.
Phoenix, Arizona – For many
companies and individuals that
take pride in donating to non-
profit organizations they will
most likely be thinking twice
about doing so with the new bill
the government is passing.
Congress is set to pass a law that
prohibits individuals and
businesses from receiving tax
deductions for charitable
donations. They are still entitled
to donate but will be taxed for
each donation made.
The new law will become active
by August 1, 2011. Congressman
Rob Portman stated, “The
government is in a time where
they rely on the tax dollars of
individuals and businesses to
function and retrieve itself from
the government’s current debt.”
One organization in particular that
has already been affected by the
bill is The Make-A-Wish
Foundation. Their mission is to
grant the wishes of children with
life-threatening medical
conditions to enrich the human
experience with hope, strength
and joy.
David Williams, President and
Chief Executive Officer, says that
the Foundation’s top donors have
started to pull out of their big
funding events. This will directly
affect the children who are waiting
patiently to receive wishes.
Williams voices that these
children may have the patience to
wait but their disease does not.
Sarah Green has been suffering
from leukemia for the past three
years. Her cancer has been
deemed to stage four, and her only
wish is to sing with the cast of
High School Musical. Sarah told
us, “I just love singing and the
girls from High School Musical
are so pretty.
I want to be just like them!” But
without the continuous donations
coming into the organization,
Sarah will remain on the waiting
list to have her wish granted.
The organization understands that
companies and individuals do not
want to be taxed on donations
that they make but it is important
to keep the organization alive and
make the dreams of children
come true to give them the hope,
strength and joy to continue
fighting.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation Takes a Hit From the New Bill That Will
Pass By Congress
May 10, 2011
Brian T. Moynihan
Chief Executive Officer and President
871 Uptown Road
Charlotte, NC 12345
Dear Mr. Moynihan:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation would like to invite you to join in the mission of the Foundation.
We are the nation’s largest wish-granting organization. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish
Foundation has given hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
From our humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, we’ve evolved into an
organization that grants a child’s wish in the U.S. every 40 minutes.
As of August 1, 2011, Congress will pass the taxed donation bill that prevents individuals and
businesses from receiving a tax write off for their charitable contributions. Instead, the
individuals will be taxed on the donations they choose to make. This bill has already become a
threat to our organization because we solely thrive off of the donations of kind and generous
people.
We believe that a potential opportunity could arise from a partnership with the Bank of America.
A development of some sort of charity card that could allow people to sign up for one of your
credit cards and allow them to continue donating money by the purchases they make will both
benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation and attract more customers to the Bank of America. We
also believe that this decision would prevent children from remaining on a waiting list and
ensure that their wishes are granted. With the Bank of America being the largest bank holding
company in America and the Make-A-Wish Foundation being the largest wish granting
organization we both can together do great things!
I greatly extend this suggestion to you for the hope that one day a sick child will never have to be
turned away from receiving a wish.
Best Regards,
Jennifer Ryans

Swipe for a Cause
(Phoenix, Arizona)- May 19, 2011- The Make-A-Wish Foundation announces their partnership
with Bank of America.
The Bank of America Make-A-Wish Platinum Credit Card allows individuals to sign up for the
credit card and donate portions of the money that is spent to the Foundation. For those people
who already give to Make-A-Wish or for those who are looking for a convenient way to give
back, this type of reward credit card may be a good solution. This credit card offers a small dose
of being helpful to other people through spending money and paying on your credit card bill.
Bank of America will even pay the taxes that may prohibit individuals from donating because of
the taxed donation bill that will be passed on August 1, 2011.
Although the percentage coming from your individual credit card may look small, when it is
combined with donations from other credit card users it can have a good impact on the Make-A-
Wish Foundation. For more information on the different ways that this card works visit Bank of
America at www.bankofamerica.com or The Make-A-Wish Foundation at www.makeawish.com
