But even though today’s fundraising spotlight might shine more brightly on mobile fundraising, email remains an important donor outreach and communications tool.

Five tips for smart mobile emails. If you’re not optimizing your fundraising emails for mobile viewing, you’re losing out. A few tips:

• Keep it simple. Small screens demand clean, simple design to increase readability. Avoid multicolumn layouts that force readers to zoom or scroll. Keep typefaces readable and images, if any, small and quick to load.

• Streamline content. Long emails don’t get read on mobile devices. Get to the point and close with a call to action. Use buttons as well as in-text links to encourage recipients to go to your website for more detail.

• Make it easy. Enable donors to give directly from each email – add a PayPal Donate button for one-click access to your donation flow.

• Be smart about choosing partners. Choose an email service provider that supports mobile-friendly email templates. Make sure that third-party vendors are mobile-optimized. For example, email marketing provider Constant Contact is integrated with Network for Good’s DonateNow online fundraising tool, and can help you send mobile-friendly emails that point donors to mobile-optimized donation pages.

• Preview and test. Get it right before you send. Your email templates should be previewed on multiple mobile browsers, as should every email you send out.
