The costs for these programs are approximate. The actual costs may vary, depending upon residency status, number of credits taken, and other factors.

Dear Students and Community Members,

The Maricopa Community College District offers you the opportunity to engage in the life-transforming opportunity of education abroad. An educational experience outside the United States can be valuable for preparing you to participate effectively in an increasingly interconnected global community that expects cross-cultural skills and knowledge. You will

have the opportunity to travel to another country and not just learn in your classes but also develop an appreciation for the people and their culture.

Business leaders recognize the unique characteristics that are offered by a workforce that is culturally competent to compete in the global economy, and are seeking graduates with foreign language skills and international study experience. Allan Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education stated that, “Studying abroad enables American students to obtain first-hand experience in other countries and cultures, to prepare them as 21st century professionals and leaders in all fields. The international skills they gain are crucial to their ability to succeed in global careers and work together across borders to address important world issues.”

Vivian Stewart, author of Becoming Citizens of the World, wrote that our students will “sell to the world; buy from the world; work for international companies; manage employees from other cultures and countries; collaborate with people all over the world in joint ventures; compete with people on the other side of the world for jobs and markets; and tackle global problems. Teaching students about the world is not a subject in itself, separate from other content areas, but should be an integral part of all subjects taught. We need to open global gateways and inspire students to explore beyond their national borders.”

As citizens of the world, it is incumbent upon us to provide our students these opportunities for self-transformation. As a former international student, I have first-hand knowledge of the many benefits that are gained from an education abroad experience. I encourage you to participate in any of the courses led by our Maricopa Community Colleges faculty. You will be making the world your classroom, and you will benefit immeasurably from the experience.

Description: The Czech Republic is geographically situated in the center of Europe. Czechs like to think of their country as “the bridge between East and West.” Bordering Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria, the country has always been an important crossroad.

The City of Prague is also known as the “City of 100 Spires.” Its compact medieval center remains an evocative maze of cobbled lanes, ancient courtyards, mysterious passages and churches beyond number, all watched over by a 1,000-year-old castle. Prague was one of the few European cities relatively untouched during the world wars, allowing its historic architecture to stay true to form. Prague is a traditional cultural center of Europe, hosting many festivals and concerts.

Included in the program is a three-day excursion to Vienna, Austria.

Description: The Nice and French Riviera (Cote d’Azur) program will take place in one of the most beautiful parts of the world where students will learn and practice conversational French while also learning about the history and culture of this area, bordered by the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean and the grandeur of the French Alps. The program’s home is Nice, the 5th largest city in France and home to the famous Promenade des Anglais, which runs along its famous pebbled beach, lined with open-air markets and unique buildings. The program includes excursions to Cannes, Les Iles de Lerins, Antibes, Eze, Beaulieu sur Mer, and Monaco. No previous knowledge of French is necessary as students will enroll in French conversation and learn how to converse in everyday situations in shops, restaurants, markets, train stations, and other everyday locations and activities. Optional excursions to Corsica, Ventimiglia, and Avignon, are available, in addition to scuba diving and perfume making. While in Nice, local families provide homestays (including breakfasts and dinners), thus providing an invaluable cultural, language, and food immersion experience!
